Hot. Thanks for this - haven't seen it since I was a child, and had been meaning to buy it for ages. I'm sure it's just as powerful now as it felt back then.

Powerful propaganda for the Soviet Union and its fellow-travellers who wanted to deal with the Soviet's ambitions for Western Europe by giving up our arms unilaterally. Thank goodness that lot didn't get their way before the Soviet Union collapsed!

Interesting for its historical value though

I'm thinking 'powerful' more along the lines of its representation of normal people facing death!

Not a Daily Mail reader, by any chance, or the Torygraph are you? :whistling:

Absolutely not - just someone who's old enough to remember the persistent shrieking nonsense of lefties, sundry red fascists (SWP, Militant, etc.) and CND naifs of the need to give up our arms to protect us from destruction by the Soviets - as if that would have prevented the Soviets from moving on western Europe.

Fortunately, leveller heads prevailed and the Soviets were faced down to the extent that their militarily focused economy collapsed, leading to freedom as we know it across most of eastern Europe.

Turend out allright in the end, no thanks to CND and their fellow-travellers

I think you'd struggle to find any evidence for this view - and I doubt it even entered Raymond Briggs' head.

How did you manage to make so many dramatic conclusions about the Soviet propaganda machines involvements with this British produced film? I thought it was just a simple tale of how the destiny of most normal people can be decided by a small number of other people they may never meet. I must not have the historical and political insight you obviously have.

Fantastic film. Thanks for the heads-up.

You seem quite keen on repeating your trite, and incorrect, jibe about newspapers. Are you a Mirror reader, or do you pretend to be a Guardian reader?

Re. Raymond Briggs, I'm not suggesting that he's involved in any kind of conspiracy - just that this piece of his work is poignant and moving, and thus powerful propaganda, certainly at the time, for those who were motivated, for whatever reason, to lobby for unilateral disarmament.

As for your dismissal of my brief summary of the end of the cold war, you must be right, there is no evidence - that'd be why Foot and Kinnock won the general elections in 1983, 87 and 92. Oh, wait...

This has to be one if not the most depressing film ever made.

I remember watching this as a child in the late 80's I had nightmares
for a week and then developed a unhealthy obsession with Nuclear
weapons, watch with caution .

unhealthy obsession pro or con nuclear weapons?

Absolutely brilliant film that had a huge effect on me as a child. The charming cartoon nature, and gentle first half made the second half all the more powerful and dramatic.

Sounds like the kind of line the gun lobbyists still engage in America, and we all know how successful that approach has been in keeping gun-crime down.

TBH I'd much rather have had the Soviets moving on western Europe than both sides deploying nuclear weapons and killing millions of ordinary people (which has been proven to have been a very real possibility during the height of the arms race).

LOL :-D

I was too young for the politics it was just the science behind them,
and funnily enough I went on to work with pyrotechnics

This is one of the Films, I can remember watching at School in the 80's.

Great film and soundtrack by Roger Waters!

Scared me when I was a kid.

superb film ! Very heartfelt & human.
I too watched it as a kid, then again a few years ago on dvd rental - superb animation, and still very touching (although the politics have changed a lot since then)
