White Asparagus, 500g for £1 from Lidl...

Found 17th May 2014
Went to Lidl in Blackwater today and noticed they had really nice looking white asparagus (six thick stalks, Dutch grown, 500g pack) reduced down from £2.50 to £1.00. White asparagus is very different to the more widely available green variety and has a lot to offer as long as you're not put off by vegetables that are a bit phallic in appearance! Not sure if this deal is local or national but suspect it will be the latter. White asparagus has a very short season so get them while you can.

And they cooked it this morning on the BBC's Saturday Kitchen!

'Dutch grown' - unfortunately words you do not want to hear when buying asparagus.

UKIP the new Tory party. Anyone voting for either of the above should be ashamed of themselves.

I'd say that of anyone voting for anyone who's been in power in the last 20+ years. As if Labour or the Lib Dems are any better than the bunch of dishonest self serving imbeciles that run the Tory party, I'd like to see your evidence.

As for Dutch grown, why?

mike

to be honest when I glanced at the picture I thought it was a deal for roll ups or spliffs !

Hell, no! I'm not a racist, or a crackpot, or an Express /Mail reader.
One of the few things in life, though, that HAS to be English is asparagus. Nothing else matches it.

Had this quite a few times in the Netherlands and it is good - far better than the out of season hothouse tomatoes and the like that we get.

Who said I thought labour or the lib dems were any better?

Clegg is just a puppet and labour themselves are thinly veiled conservatives. Not to mention that the majority are self serving and only out for what they can get.

Does white asparagus make your pee smell funny too??

According to Wikipedia the answer is possibly yes! This is something I wasn't aware of. Cooking them tonight. Will sniff own pee on Monday and post results.

Only if you have a switched gene expression, will asparagus smell. Approx 40% of us won't notice the difference.

Only if you're a UKIP voter. But then, if you're planning to vote UKIP your whole body will have gone badly wrong.

Isn't the gene difference the ability to smell it rather than whether it originally smells? - in which case you could always get other people to test yours. (I know I could google it...)

Peakbear - I always thought it was a mixture of both. You have to have the pee gene AND the gene to be able to smell the difference.

Is it the same with sugarpuffs I wonder?

I've never cooked these, just eaten them cold from the tin with salad. This is nothing like the green fresh asparagus people are talking about, and I've never seen that in a tin, can't imagine it would be very pleasant.

We don't grow white asparagus in England, so you're not really going to manage that.

Just to make it clear, the Lidl white asparagus are fresh, not tinned.

Can't afford £1 for asparagus, since my job got outsourced to Belarus :-). Did get some last year in the reduced selection at Morrisons and it's sublime fresh and makes a lovely creamy soup if too old to eat fresh.

(oh and it's true, used to work in IT, but then the company realised it could outsource most work to Belarus - I don't think the MD had heard of zero hours contracts, so made everyone re-apply for their jobs at up to 35% lower salary (in my case), so now no longer a tax payer and my salary disappears out of the country and they wonder why UKIP is starting to appeal as a viable alternative).

Sad story. Maybe when Putin gobbles up Belarus (that's after he's digested the Ukraine) your old firm will reshore your old job. Just remember that if you're short on cash, Aldi and Lidl are your best friends. I think the German discounters have done more for poor people and the elderly than the Labour party in recent years.

So which party do you recommend? Respect? BNP? Socialist Workers?

Just eaten them steamed. V tasty!! Really nice in fact. Can't give an opinion on smelly wee-wee yet as I don't want to go just yet...

Just out of curiosity, has anyone managed to find any of this for £1 elsewhere than Blackwater?

Whats UKIP got to do with sending jobs to the Belarus?
They aren't even part of the EU!

Typical Tory / UKIP voting swivel eyed loon...

None Of The Above!

If everyone were to make a stand we could overthrow the corrupted corridors of power, but therein lies the problem...far too many people quite happy (or simply don't care) enough to make any kind of effort!

I think Blackwater must be the only place selling it at that price - nobody else reports having found any!

You are quite wrong, UKIP are not just anti European Union, they believe, possibly correctly, that there's too much immigration from all over the world, if you can't manage to understand that simple fact, then how on earth do you figure out what other parties' policies are? Plus whether or not it was their policy, why do you think they are so popular at the moment, it's because anyone who sees their job disappear offshore, whilst watching big business and entertainers avoid paying their fair way. I don't know which way I'm voting, but I do think something needs to shake up the main parties into actually doing what we want.

In our 'democracy' if you spoil your ballet your vote doesn't count, it doesn't matter if 99.9999% do the same, so long as there are votes, those will count, I agree we need to make a stand, but not sure voting for any of the above is the way forward, it's a shame the monster raving loonies aren't more prevalent, because that would be the best way to vote against the top 3.

I went into the local Lidl today & they didn't have any

Oh yes I fully realise that a NOTA vote will spoil the paper. Just wish that the majority of people would wake up and see what the combined governments of the past 30-40 years have slowly done to our country. I also wish that people would research into some of the 'facts' that this particular government keep spouting off through their media mouthpieces.

Fully agree about the raving loonies, the only other option in my area is to vote green, which after reading their manifesto doesn't seem like such a bad option, again providing that they were to stick to their word...
