Here at Whole Earth we take environmental and social matters very seriously and want to help protect our planet. We only use 100% sustainable palm oil that has no impact on the environment, local people or local habitats.

We have created this page to help simplify the complex nature of the palm oil debate. We hope it will explain why we are supporting sustainable palm oil and you will find it useful.
-----------------------------------------------------------

WARNING: Meridian brand peanut butter contains more overall carbs and sugar than Whole Earth. Carbs and sugar are linked to obesity and inflammation. Meridian brand is also sloppy & oily, resembling baby food.

-----------------------------------------------------------

HELP TO SAVE THE PLANET WITH WHOLE EARTH

Other brands simply cannot match this peanut butter.

Palm is the most efficient oil and when sourced sustainably, is the best for the environment, with the lowest carbon footprint. Substituting the worlds demand to other oils would lead to environmental damage elsewhere, therefore it's important to grow and buy sustainable palm oil.

SUSTAINABLE PALM OIL HAS A POSITIVE EFFECT ON LOCAL ECONOMIES AND FAMILIES.Palm oil actually provides a vital source of income to local communities and families in developing countries, helping lift them out of poverty.

-----------------------------------------------------------

BOOST HEALTH WITH PALM OIL

Palm oil contains antioxidants, such as carotenoids and tocotrienols, that might provide protection against certain types of cancer, according to a 2007 article published in the "European Journal of Lipid Science and Technology."

This is only 97% Peanuts, with the remaining 3% being Palm Oil & Sea Salt. Palm Oil has absolutely no business being added to anything, let alone Peanut Butter. Meridian is 100% Peanuts - nothing added - and far superior imho. If only for the absence of Palm Oil.

We use lots and lots of peanut butter and this is so far worst. We went though lots of brands. Meridian tastes same even months after best before.

The addition of Palm Oil doesn't help. From an ecological POV, we refuse to buy anything with Palm Oil. Cadbury is even adding it to their "chocolate" which is part of the reason it tastes so crap nowadays.

I'm posting this in order to make you aware of the sort of comments you may be unaware you are up-voting and highlighting which helps to spread false information about a company who actually does care about the planet and wildlife habitats.

The following is taken from Whole Earth's website (link above) who are approved by the Vegetarian Society:

---------------

As a side note, please also be aware there are people in this thread posing as someone they are not. People who proclaim to boycott palm oil products should not be consuming or posting deals about Jaffa Cakes (and many, MANY other products), which contain palm oil, and of which are not from a sustainable source like that of Whole Earth's products.

Cheers.

Normally £3.60 for a 454g jar so seems like a good price. Tesco website seems to be price matching 1kg for £5 on delivery orders, not seen in store.
Heat for price but it tastes like crap. Honestly should be given for free. Nor even close to Meridian peanut butter
Pure salt in this
Any particularly delicious peanut butters I should look out for, I would primarily use it in cooking only.
Thanks .
It's always a fiver in B&M

ASDA's own brand whole (skins in) crunchy peanut butter contains sea salt too. After trying various brands from other places like Aldi and Lidl, I can say the ASDA one is one of my favourites. Not 100% (it's 97%) as is has a little palm oil, but that's no biggie... one of the best tasting IMO.

Meridian. Look for deals on amazon. I got two 1kg tubs for a bit more than 7 quid last month. Meridian is superior when it comes to quality

I didn't like Meridian's oily texture personally.
tastes like salty plastic to me.
probably because of the palm oil.
Personally i prefer meridian

Doesn't matter to me... The texture wasn't to my taste & no idea why it's so sloppy. The ASDA stuff I use only has 3% palm oil, which means nothing unless you are against palm oil for ecological reasons. As long as people aren't eating junk like Sunpat, then it's all good.

The reason Whole Earth doesn't taste "oily" is because of the Palm Oil - it's hydrogenated! With the Meridian one, just stir the butter before you use it. I've done my PhD on Plant Oils.

Seriously doubt it's hydrogenated! They would have to mention it on the label.

I read recently that 100,000 Orangutans have been murdered since 2000 - mostly their habitat is being cleared for Palm Oil Plantations and they get in the way. Shocking carry-on.

Whole Earth use Sustainable Palm Oil.
Bottom line is Whole Earth is not as good as Meridian - on all levels. Even if Whole Earth had no Palm Oil or Salt in it, I still wouldn't buy it. Meridian all the way.

It’s in stores too
Cheap price, but I prefer the Meridian peanut butter.
Crikey this debate on simple peanut butter has become a bit excessive.
For my side, I have just bought and tried Meridian and hate the stuff. It really is, as described earlier, oily and sloppy.
It's just my own personal poor judgement I know, but I still love the thick solid types, dare I say it....Sun Pat. I'm off now to hide in a hole before an angry mob turns up.
For those who haven't tried these natural type peanut butters, they are way different to what you are used to. Just buy a small one to try it first. If you love it, then brilliant and if not, you can give it to someone you don't like.
Either way, thanks to the OP for taking the time to post this and for the many who like this more natural type, it's a great deal.
Huge Peanut butter user / fan here so I thought I would offer an alternative 'Active Foods Crunchy Peanut Butter' is 100% Peanuts and the best 100% peanuts type I have taste it. I subscribe and save via Amazon, but for singles purchases on Prime its £5.99.

This is nothing, if it had also said vegan or even dare I say it halal, things should have really kicked off!

Just to be clear peanut butter is usually vegan and halal

I'm well aware of the claims for sustainable palm oil. I'm also well aware of numerous investigations into corruption involving various suppliers of supposedly sustainable palm oil and even the trade body, whereby palm oil that is anything but sustainable gets falsely labelled.

I'm afraid I have no confidence in those involved in the sustainable palm oil trade to properly regulate their industry so choose to boycott palm oil, whatever it's supposed provenance.

As for the suggestion that's it's better for the planet to add palm oil rather than have a product that's 100% peanut, snort.

I care not about other posters motivations and will continue to vote for them if I think they make valid points about palm oil and/or Meridian bring a superior product, which it is.

Hope that's clear.

But giving money to companies which then spend it on the evil, corrupt palm oil industry to make their peanut butter, is still virtuous?

The world isn't black and white. Whole Earth, as an organic company, has some laudable aims. Supporting it by buying products that are far better than Coke, Pepsi, etc., whilst choosing not to buy other products that are not as good isn't about being virtuous but trying to use my money wisely to support the things I agree with but not those they don't.

If Whole Earth's peanut butter sales suffer they might be convinced to tweak their recipe and ditch the palm oil.

I don't think I underestimated anything but I do think you overestimated your understanding of me, again.
