How much do you think a free-range, whole black Iberian pig fed on wild acorns and cured for three years would cost?
Edited by: "maclennanneil" 4th Sep 2015
There are 40 quid at lidl
So, this pig has been dead three years?

Is that healthy stuff to eat??

Indeed.

That lovely water injected, pea starch added chemical filled rubbish.

There really is no educating some people.
can't you make your own from bacon or a pork joint and just hang if in the garage or airing cupboard? maybe add "des urbs" and stuff. whack it on the table and shave bits off at Christmas ..... voilà. save your self some money.
plus I'm sure the aldi stuff is the same. just pigs from a different country. I read it in viz once. they also showed you how to make your own crakers out of toilet roll. but they tasted mingin. unless of course you had some home made parmo ham!

I do not require education from you. But thanks all the same son.
besides..... it's cheap because really it should be classed as mutton.
To be fair this is not the same as the Serrano that lidl and also sell. It will probably be much nicer but you have to equate that with the price, this is cheap.

Are you people sure that this is actually a pig? If so, it could be rather culturally insensitive to post on here.

unless you're an iberico pig breeder, you really ought to learn to lighten up... or educate yourself not to be so pompous... have a bit of grace if people don't go along with your deal... it's not as if we'll send you back to spain if it goes cold. or... maybe.. we... will?!?

No they don't. They sell Serrano ham. This and Serrano ham are both from Spain but of different qualities. Whether someone appreciates the difference is another matter. As I understand it this stuff is almost melt in the mouth. It's like the difference between Aberdeen Angus and Kobe/wagyu beef. And if you feel the extra expense is worthwhile.

Just really interested, do you not understand the term 'cured' when applied to food?

Hot deal!

I would have been awfully tempted had I not recently purchased the lidl £29.99 leg, however these two products are incomparible, this is like the fillet steak of Serrano ham and an absolute bargain price for the quality.

The 'pata negra' (black foot) pigs have roamed free and eaten a diet of acorns, they've had a happy life and healthy diet. The curing process over double that of the lidl one will produce a richer, fuller flavour and is an overall far superior product.

If you're a Serrano affectionado then this is worth buying, but I can't justify it when I have a freshly started leg already in the utility room (sliced some the other day to go on pizzas, will have some soon for spaghetti carbonara...you'd be surprised how much money a leg of Serrano saves you once you stop buying ham and bacon).

Not iberico bellota either, though I think they are in the region of 7+kg.
I'd love one but no Costco around here. Hot.
