get the original wii for this then you can use gamecube games as well as wii can't with the mini
This is the worst version of the Wii and probably released as an inside joke on Nintendo's part.

1. There is no GameCube game or even GameCube controller support. Many games, including Mario Kart Wii and Smash Bros Brawl, allow GameCube controller support as an option, but on this Wii you lose this ability.

2. Only Composite video output for 480i resolution only. Regular Wii's have the ability for Component output, which allows for a 480p Enhanced Definition display.

3. No Wi-Fi support. This is still a thing because a few games, such as Call of Duty Black Ops and Modern Warfare, still have online multiplayer running.

4. Unable to softmod. Because there is no Wi-Fi option you can't do the super easy softmod hack which allows you to play Super Nintendo, NES and Sega Genesis emulators amongst many other things.

Gamecube games work on a wii??

As pointed out only on the standard models, not Wii Mini and also not the blue 2012 Olympics edition.

You do however need a Gamecube controller to play, and a Gamecube memory card to save. Both of these plug in on the side where the sideplate flaps down to reveal 4 Gamecube controller ports and 2 memory card slots.

Basically make sure the Wii model has flaps like this:

#4 is actually untrue now. A couple of months ago the Wii mini was hacked using a bug in its Bluetooth stack. This also technically means Nintendont will very likely work, supporting the loading of Gamecube ISOs (although you wont be able to rip your discs unfortunately as the disc drive won't be able to read them). You can even use a gamecube controller in Nintendont with the Wii U USB adapter.

Only model 1 Wiis support Gamecube. Later ones had the flap in the image above removed which housed the Gamecube controller and memory card ports (other than that they looked the same). The Wii mini, as people said, doesn't support Gamecube just like the second model of Wii.

So, if saying this out loud in Scotland, you're basically saying it's a small small console?!
Just FYI this model (mini) can be modded. A lot more difficult compared to the original. I’d pay a few quid more. Get the original Wii. Full GC support. Completely modable and brick proof.

I didn't know there was still a market for the Wii! I still have mine from 2007 fully loaded with so many accessories. I am retissant to summit as if is still good fun. How much do they go for?
This is more a collectable console rather than a good console to use but unlikely to come in a collectable condition from CEX but you might get lucky. These were only produced in low volume as far as I'm aware. A wii u is a better option nowadays which can be homebrewed and run wii u, wii and gamecube games as well as emulate some other consoles.

The Wii mini can now be hacked apparently but the rest of your points are still valid.

If a C64 mini was released tomorrow, it would be the same. It is funny
BC with GC was one of the great things the Wii did. So many great GC to play and can be picked up cheap.

Modding. Not hacking.

"The original term "Hacker" was simply someone that made modifications to hardware or software to make it do things it was not intended to do"

But whatever.

I was just talking to the missus earlier today about getting our 3y.o. a wii for Xmas. Thanks op
You can buy full fat Wiis for about £15 - £20 so not sure why you would want this...
Did I fall asleep and miss the release of this? When was this a thing?!
There’s none in store in Northern Ireland and very few across the whole UK in store anyway. As an earlier poster said these would be more for a collector as the older original Wii has lot more options.

I also would assume the controller with these wouldn’t be a genuine motion plus one as those on their own are quite expensive. if there was one local I would check out the condition. CeX consoles can be a bit hit and miss but I got a great black Wii bundle for 20 quid a year ago and have saw a lot of great condition Wii u consoles in cex too.

Am messing about on my black Wii recently with softmodding and have SNES, mega drive, pc engine and best of all GameCube emulators working great. Haven’t much of a clue what I’m doing and bit trial and error at times but some craic anyway. I also have my own original Wii from when it was released but didn’t want to risk messing with it in case I messed it up.
But a normal Wii. This one is crap.
probably the worst wii model out there. there’s no wifi (even though most of the online services for the wii have been shut down some games like mario kart have community servers set up for online play) and no gamecube support, limiting the number of games you can play. a classic console but get the first version and you essentially have two consoles in one

It launched over here the end of of March 2013, 4 months after the Wii U.

I dream of an Amiga mini
A terrible version of an amazing console. You should be able to find a fully featured (GC BC, Wi-Fi, SD card slot, easily moddable) Wii for around the same price, plus the Mini is not really that much smaller and it has an awful flip top lid instead of slot loading DVD drive. Avoid.

Wow, yes, where have you been for the last 14 years?
But yes, the Wii was backwards compatible - at least the original model was. If it has GameCube controller ports and memory card slots on the top (under a couple of flaps) then it will play the games.

It originally meant anyone who was good with computers/programming, but is generally used to refer to anyone who is particularly good at finding ways around security measures - so it does apply to softmodding consoles, because that basically is all about finding ways around the console's security to get full access to the system.
