Once you start using this, you’ll never go back to potato masher.
One of the best kitchen devices ever.

Cook potatoes in big chunks (halves preferably) quarters if very large ones until very soft. You would rather have them overcooked than undercooked!
Drain and leave on the colander to dry up a bit. 30 minutes is fine. I usually make it in advance.

Once drained cooled and dried up, you’ll be ready to to mash them.
Put one or two in the ricer and press. Repeat with the rest.
Put the pot with mash on a very low heat, add cold butter in small cubes and keep mixing with spatula. Continue tasting and adding butter and salt to your liking. (No such thing as too much butter in mash)

Once ready you got mash potato that could easily sell for £4.95 a portion in a fancy restaurant.
    Enjoy.
    Toss away your old masher.

Cleaning is easy. Just don’t leave it to dry. Wash straight away or fill up potato pan with water and leave the ricer in it until ready to clean. You don’t want to be piercing those holes later with a toothpick. (edited)

It's a bit early for mash but I really want some now

I love the mash from these, the only thing is by the time it's done it's not hot enough
Heat added (no pun intended) (edited)

You do get better at it after a few attempts.

One key is to not overcook them so they're in one piece.

I have a bowl I transfer the potatoes into after draining, and then I rice them back into the pan. You can use tongs to transfer them or burn your fingers. Use warm milk and butter and salt obviously and stir so it looks mash.

I'm not Gordon Ramsay but this works for me and if it doesn't for whatever reason... Microwave alone on a plate for 90 seconds (edited)

I use this now. Much better mash.

I have a very similar one (no interchangeable plate). It's a bit of a pain to wash, best done immediately after using it, and takes up a good deal of space on the drier but it's certainly worth any of that hassle for the mash consistency.

    Hand wash only? It's stainless.

Had one years and like ever other utensil in the kitchen it goes in the dishwasher without a problem

This looks identical to the Lidl "Ernesto" branded one I have and the interchangeable plates are a pain, every press makes the plate stick to the plunger and you have to remove and reset it. I'd look for one with a single fixed plate, never found a reason to change the plate anyway.

I have a similar one from John Lewis. I have to prise the plate away from the plunger every single time I press a potato.
    Would not recommend buying this!

Great for getting the right mash consistency then piping it onto your cottage pie 🥧

Brilliant for mash, of course. These are also great for de-watering shredded potato to make hash browns.
