Why is everyone voting this down.

I realise that a lot of people know about this already but many do not.

I would like to know if this is free for ever or will microsoft start charging for this at some point in the future.
i.e. if I upgrade in 2015, will they start charging me from 2016 onwards for the privalege of using their software.

Cold, they're ignoring the Android base

shouldn't it be in freebies?

This is more news than a deal isn't it? Not new news mind you though.
PS. reads like this is available now and obviously not lol

Less of a "deal" and more of a "freebie" I'd say...might explain the chill factor too

You know if you're Chinese you get this for free

Once you upgrade to this then it's free forever. No extra charges in 2016 and beyond. You have one year to upgrade for free. If you don't upgrade and the time runs out, then you will have to buy the software

Or a pirate but I believe there's a permanent watermark if you get it this way.

not available yet... cold

When is it coming out. Will games have any combat ability issues.

It should be free, Windows 8 is ****.

out post summer

Think everyone knows about this by now, but still a good deal given Microsoft have not exactly been benevolent in the past with it's software upgrades.

Even if you haven’t yet tried it yourself, you probably already know that Windows 10 is a breath of fresh air. Windows 8 was an absolutely disaster, as Microsoft recognized that it needed to compete in the mobile space but decided that a single hybrid operating system was the answer. Sadly, the resulting OS failed on both fronts.

Windows 10 will follow the same path to an extent, but it dials back the new interface that angered so many users. Better yet, Microsoft has said on numerous occasions that the upgrade will be free for many users — but there is a great deal of confusion surrounding exactly who will be eligible for the free upgrade.

Here’s everything we know right now.

Do consumers get Windows 10 for free? Do enterprise users get Windows 10 for free? Do Windows pirates get Windows 10 for free? Will you get Windows 10 for free if you’re currently still using an old version of Windows like Windows XP?

These questions and more weigh heavy on users’ minds. As was the case with the Xbox One, Microsoft has done an awful job of communicating the details of the Windows 10 upgrade, so anxious users have been left with a thousand questions.

Luckily, gHacks put together a great roundup of all the info we have so far to see if you’re eligible for a free update. And in addition to what we know, the site does a good job of spelling out all of the blanks that Microsoft hasn’t yet filled in.

First and foremost, you will be eligible for a free upgrade if you’re running a licensed copy of Windows 7, 8 or 8.1. There are several different versions of Windows 10 though, and the version you can upgrade to depends on the operating system you’re currently running.

Meanwhile, people running licensed copies of older operating systems such as Windows XP or Vista will also get free upgrades, but only for one year. After that, however, they’ll have to pay.

For clarifications on these details and everything else you need to know, follow the link below in our source section.

One thing I would like to know is if, like me, you have three laptops, two with Windows 7 and one with Windows 8.1, do you get three free upgrades?

Hi, just to clarify does it continue to be free for those who have upgraded in the first year.? Also do you know if the win 10 will allow access to android apps and what's the difference between win 10 and 8.1? Thanks

I thought it was free for the 1st year then you had to pay for the upgrade but no its free for ever......well unless you have xp,vista or enterprise versions of 7/8/8.1,then you may get the 1st year free but after that.....get your credit card out.

As I understand it the free upgrade to Windows 10 will be free to obtain for 12 months and will continue to be free onwards, If you don't upgrade during the 12 months after release you will be asked to pay to upgrade but in either case it will continue to work and be updated for free once obtained.
So if you want W10 then it's better to upgrade during the 12 month free period.

Was always labelled as free forever, just you had to upgrade in year one. The poor wording and the internets hate for Windows 8 i feel influenced the whole confusion though.

That said, I feel like I'm the only one on the internet who enjoys Windows 8.1 at times... I chose to install it over 7 when i migrated to an SSD, and I haven't looked back. After about an hour (not including the 4 hours i spent fathing around with dual booting, which i gave up on after I realised it wasn't going to happen) I was back up to speed with how it works, and with classic shell works exactly like 7. I also feel it looks better, and I do actually use the start screen (not often, but its quick enough when i do) productively. I'll probably upgrade to 10 nearer the end of the year free, when they've ironed out most of the quirks with it that windows inevitable has at the start of its life.

BTW many thanks to the OP for the heads up. very useful to register an interest with MS and be emailed when it's available. Worthwhile, heat added.

what happens if I upgrade from windows 8.1 in the first year, then after the year is up I then wipe my computer and reinstall my operating system. do I I install windows 8.1 and then still have access to the free upgrade. or can I just do a straight install of windows 10, and my windows 8.1 key now works with windows 10 installs. or am I going to be expected to pay for the upgrade.

You got it in one

You got it in one

is that an assumption, or has that been confirmed.

Actually, there have been some reports that even 'unverified' (yes, cracked) copies of the appropriate product will still qualify for an upgrade. If that proves to be correct I suppose MS intentions to hit 3 billion installs for win 10 may be a lot more feasible (China etc...). Longer term you have to think that Windows will move to a subsription/service model anyway rather than a one hit charge.

Thanks for the info, voted hot.

It should be free, Windows 8 is ****.

So why don't you upgrade now to 8.1? It's free and it's probably the best operating system that Microsoft have produced.

Don't think me or my cracked copy will be eligible

Please elaborate on your opinion. List your specific reasons why windows 8 is bad in your opinion. I bet it sums up to be down to just one thing.......

Only free for first year. The you will have to pay for it. It's. far better that Windows 8 or 8.1. I'm using the preview on a machine and find it works very well and is much more pleasant to use.

Cracked/dodgy copies can be upgraded but will not authenticate as genuine. Supposedly.
