Simply download a copy of the installation media from the link below and use your Windows 7, 8 or 8.1 product key.

microsoft.com/en-…10/

Please ensure you install the same version as your product key, e.g. Windows 7 Home > Windows 10 Home.

This won't work with Windows 8, only 7 and 8.1.

Even better - you can follow this link for a more updated version of the upgrade utility:

Windows 7 is and always has been objectively better than XP on almost every front. XP is only useful for legacy software and hardware (and its nostalgia).

Oh, I love it when I hear that "... if you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to worry about ..." line.

Right there, we have the attitude that your rulers government wishes all its minions citizens had.

I cannot imagine anyone who has read any of the books on Snowden, or even Orwell's '1984', would take such a casual line. There is a LOT to be worried about.

Updated my 10 with latest update and it killed it. Hosed my hard disc and went back to 7. I found 8 and 10 awful anyway. More Fisher Price than an OS

i thought free upgrade date was finished?

Would this work with OEM Keys or only retail?

It says

  • If you don’t have a license to install Windows 10 and you have not previously upgraded to Windows 10, you can purchase a copy of Windows 10, see microsoft.com/en-…10.

Are you sure its free?
Be very careful about upgrading/updating at the moment, the latest update is causing a BSOD loop on a lot of machines.

It has, but this way still works.

Nothing to suggest it's free., Oh "To get started, you will first need to have a license to install Windows 10."

The BSOD is fixed on the next release(I am on the Insider skip ahead), was annoying as it crashed twice a day (at least) every day.

I tested this with a Windows 7 Pro OEM key and it worked fine.

Latest creator update killed my Microsoft Bluetooth mouse, it's a very common problem. Pain in the @#@@ as it's the only mouse I can use with my tablet.

How do you find the serial key on a W8 machine? Bought a desktop from Dell and would like to upgrade.

It should be on a sticker on the case somewhere. Dell's support page should point it out for you.

This is digital key stored on Microsoft servers. If you have legal eligible windows 7 or 8 just use the above link I have provided and then you will not be prompted for the product key. After full installation you will get working legal copy of W10. To do everything properly I would create USB with Media Creation tool and after fist successful install I would do clean install from it.

Sure we are talking about the same one? This one only started 2 days ago and stops you using the PC.

Dont really know what the difference is but I did it via this a few days ago. no need to enter serial numbers, it just downloaded and did it all with no probs. microsoft.com/en-…)()

this has been working for quite a while. it accepts old win7 keys. this way we've been installing hundreds a day.

As long as your Windows 7 / 8 / 8.1 is showing activated in "SYSTEM" then you can use the method in this thread.

You can also use: microsoft.com/en-…)()

Thats a different one to the BSOD I and a few others had

intersting thread one question why would you want windows 10 when its still a pile of the brown stuff????

i would not install it if they paid me!

Did a fresh install of Windows 10 the other day and for some reasons it thinks my gtx750ti is a gt560ti.

System is hanging all over the place.

you do know they can see what you are viewing and reading and writing. if i were you, id immediately log off your pc, and burn it. In fact burn all your tech, its probably spying on you

Win10 takes 22Gb which is hopeless for me as I've got only 32Gb hdd

Yeah, I'd recommend sticking with Win 7 for as long as you can. No end of problems with Win10 and all of it's NSA spying tricks.

In windows 8 the way computers were given licence keys was changed instead of having a physical licence sticker on the machine Microsoft changed it so that licence key is encrypted in the bios by the manufacturer. It is only windows 10 where the digital key is stored on Microsoft servers.

In windows 8 Microsoft got rid of licence stickers and the licence key was encrypted and hard coded into the bios instead.

Maybe because it's faster and more feature rich?

seems a bit dodgy to me...

where as IF you have problems and need to use any of the "assistive technologies" tools, then you still entitled to a free upgrade to windows 10 (no they don't check)

All the fully legal information available here on the microsoft site

use this free & trusted app magicaljellybean.com/key…er/

it installs and finds your product key in a few seconds

save it somewhere safe like an email to yourself

you definitely need the key in case something goes wrong with the installation - without it, you're stuffed - so don't listen to anybody above suggesting otherwise

Agreed
Every day I get "Can't install updates" because my 32Gb eMMC has insufficient space for the 4Gb upgrade

And yes I've got attached a NAS device and a 64Gb USB stick and a 32Gb SD card yet Windows 10 does not allow these to be used to complete the update.

Interesting point ...

I also feel that Windows 98SE wasn't given as much props as perhaps it could have had also? (or perhaps that's just me?, lol). :-)

You obviously never tried installing drivers, or setting up a home network.
