Windows 10 free upgrade for customers who use assistive technologies

Found 30th Jul 2016
For the general public, the free upgrade offer for Windows 10 ends on July 29. However, if you use assistive technologies, you can still get the free upgrade offer even after the general public deadline expires.

just follow the link and it should enable you to upgrade to Windows 10 for free if you wish to. thought it was sweet...

Regarding eligibility Microsoft website states: "We are not restricting the free upgrade offer to specific assistive technologies. If you use assistive technology on Windows, you are eligible for the free upgrade offer."

Therefore seems to be pretty open to everyone?

At least you will get updates for a longer time with Windows 10. I love Android but it it comes to updates for viruses and bugs windows and IOS are much better. Some manufacturers like ZTE never release a update once they have sold the phone.
Might install a copy of Win 8.1 I have lying around on to my old Vista PC!
...worth a punt
Nice find.
What assistive technologies are eligible for the extension?

We are not restricting the free upgrade offer to specific assistive technologies. If you use assistive technology on Windows, you are eligible for the free upgrade offer.
Assistive Computer Technology is any piece of equipment that is customized to make life easier for a person who has a disability.

The personal computer (PC) can be the backbone of independence for millions of individuals with sensory, physical, and learning disabilities.

Many people with disabilities face a variety of challenges in terms of providing computer input, interpreting output and reading documentation. For persons with disabilities, the keyboard, mouse, and monitor are of prime concern so adaptive hardware and software have been developed to provide alternatives.

Screen reader programs such as JAWS or HAL are designed to allow even totally blind people to use the computer. They convert the text and icons to speech so one can use a computer without needing to see the monitor.

Accessible computer equipment and PC access aids can make it easier for computer users to use word processing programs, surf the Internet, and send email, but they can also help non-computer users handle many non-computer tasks.

Any system that aids individuals who are not independent verbal communicators is known as an augmentative communication system. The system can include speech, gestures, sign language, symbols, synthesized speech, dedicated communication aids or microcomputers.

Examples of Assistive Computer Technology Include:
•Optical character recognition (OCR) software systems are used to scan printed materials directly into the PC to accommodate many types of disabilities.
•Screen readers are software programs that provide either speech or Braille output, and are commonly employed by persons who are blind or visually impaired.
•Non-assistive computer programs like electronic mail and instant messaging empower individuals with hearing-related impairments to communicate over the Internet.
•Magnification software enlarges text and graphics displayed on PC monitors. Magnification programs are widely used by persons with poor vision or who have difficulty reading.

Common keyboard input modifications include:
•Adapted keyboards,
•on-screen keyboards,
•alternative communication programs,
•voice recognition.

Voice recognition and dictation systems are powerful assistive technologies that allow persons with disabilities to control a computer and dictate documents verbally using spoken commands.

Most computer vendors support persons with disabilities by incorporating accessibility utilities into operating systems such as Microsoft Windows, Apple Macintosh, and UNIX. PCs equipped with assistive technology permit individuals to function independently at school, work, and home, and allow access to great quantities of information from diverse sources such as compact disks, networks, electronic mail, instant messaging, the World Wide Web, and other Internet resources.

Microsoft should have followed up that sentence with a couple of winking emojis

What are the disadvantages of upgrading to this as apposed to the normal upgrade (which I know has expired)?

It's the same Windows.
Good to know. Thanks OP.
Interesting to note that some people use the "disability" card to get a free version of W10. Maybe they qualify because their only disability is a total inability to upgrade before the well publicised deadline!
I tried windows 10 and was thoroughly repulsed. Keep it. You've now messed up your track record of gettng it right every other attempt.

WinXP(yes),Vista(No!!), Win7(yes!),Win8.1(no), Win10(No!!)

Windows 7 until I die. Probably.

Chinese hack your computer and steal your personal information = crime
Someone installs malware on your machine to grab your personal info = crime
Micro$oft / Google Apple installs software which sends your personal information to their servers = perfectly fine in the eyes of most people

Just shows how brainwashed most sheeple have become

I ran through the customise options setting up(most do not) and was shocked at how invasive microsoft are in this new OS. Not to mention the fact theyve taken away the ability to control your updates. This is pure Orwellian madness. Microsoft taken control of peoples lives. They know every little move you make.
Good try Microsoft.

Don't upgrade unless you have a very good reason

I recommend everyone give this article a read and run the .bat file they promote to effortlessly uninstall some "updates" Microsoft pushed
At this stage I would hope most of us would be happy to give up a little privacy to allow the security forces to get the information to prevent our enemies killing us & subverting our economies and freedoms.
Upgraded two laptops to Windows 10 using the 29th July deadline. After switching off nearly all of the recommended telemetry, one thing that I have not worked out is how to selectively only install some windows updates and not others, I have put wifi connection as metered connection so pause the automatic updates but I have yet to work out an easy way like listing all the windows updates like it did before.
Google it?

You cant select updates now.
For those who have installed winodws 10 , try running this afterwards, as always do your homework before running it.

im not brainwashed, like most people I just don't care.
Terrible hating on what is a really good thing MS are doing. Bit sad really.

You dont like Windows? Dont use it. You do, great stuff, crack on!

Either way, unless youre a teenager and talking retro console wars, its pretty sad to have these kinds of fan boy wars isnt it?
I kept having the error upgrading so I used an upgrade iso, to prevent it asking for a serial key I disconnected from the internet, set the date back a week and upgraded windows. When it came back on it activated straight away. Set the date back to normal. You must have an upgrade iso as far as I'm aware, mine was downloaded from MS to install on multiple pc's and put on a bootable USB flash drive.
Just a heads up about upgrading. I'd suggest you backup all your files and note down what programs you use.
Then rather than 'updating', do a full clean install/wipe your PC. This way you'll have less potential issues.
You need to download the ISO and burn it to disc, and boot from that.
I only say this because friends and family who've upgraded on top of their current Windows have run into problems. Hence I've only done clean installs with no issues...touchwood.
This updates to the 'anniversary update' so saves updating seperate afterwards.. I've updated 5 from this link all worked a treat
Those saying they'll stick to Win7, yeah, it was a great OS for its time, but it's going the way of XP. When support ends, there'll be a slowly growing mountain of known security issues and nobody to plug them. Lots of people said, "XP 4 evar!!!"... those voices are getting more distant. If you're worried about MS stealing all your privacy, my opinion is that I'd prefer it to be MS (that are at least semi-accountable) than swarms of hackers nicking my bank details and loading ransomware.

Win10 is pretty close to Win7... get over yourselves and get with the programme.

PS I acknowledge Win10 is not perfect, but my only main complaint is the control panel being a schizo mess spread all over the place (thanks Win8). Thankfully I don't have to deal with it that often.
My kids are both on Windows 10 and love it.
I am only on Windows 7 because of Football Manager 2015, that will not work, even in compatibility mode, on Windows 10. Otherwise I would have upgraded ages ago .... as it was FREE.

The difference between Microsoft/Google and Apple doing it and hackers ...... they are not trying to steal money from me. They have given me operating systems that make every day life good.
Giving your information to 3rd parties happens all the time.
Get a phone from carphone warehouse and prepare to be inundated with marketing calls to your home number from other related companies ..... even if you tick the box.

--disabled windows update and restarted. Worked.

I've found win 10 to be a bit rubbish for laptops with old mechanical HDDs as MS are sending updates/probably spying and getting the laptop to send your info to then and the HDD is on a lot reducing the battery life of the laptop. It will probably be OK for SSD but if you have a mechanical HDD avoid Win 10.
