Tried to get the Tesco deal for windows 7 as want to avoid windows 8 for now! Unfortunately they didnt have any anywhere near me, so looked online and found genuine COA's with a dell backup disk. You can either use this disk to install or just download a copy of windows 7 pro from the internet and use the product key on the COA, which is a genuine, unused code so you can get updates and so on with a genuine copy of windows.

IMPORTANT TO NOTE that this is OEM, so it wont come with fancy packaging or an official windows CD. The licence key should be genuine though, so you WILL have a genuine copy of windows!

Also, included in the price is a free, damaged laptop!! This is to meet eBay rules on selling OEM software, a laptop with hard drive and ram removed is included in the sale but must be collected if you (actually) want it.

been removed, also remember anything over 4GB RAM you need 64 bit

Yeah, I posted one for £1 cheaper, but it was removed as the seller had a feedback of <1500. Thought this might be useful for anyone who wanted to upgrade to/legalise their copy of windows 7 but couldn't make use of the tesco deal!

Re: 64-bit issue, you can still use a 32-bit version of windows, but you will only utilise 3GB of RAM regardless of how much you actually have over 4GB. That may sound slightly pernickety, but for those with hardware for which 64-Bit drivers do not exist, you can still run a 32-Bit copy

Not sure now, but Dell OS disks used to be locked down to Dell motherboards and would not install on anything else.

When I have tried Dell OS disks to build other than Dell PCs they dont work, however there may be a way round it..
You would be better off paying £2 more and getting the 64 bit version from the same seller.

Not sure if it still the same but I have just built an HP laptop with a dell Windows 7 disc and licence code with no issues

Dell discs are BIOS locked to certain Dell PCs so I presume you need to use the product key included which I presume can be used on any PC.
This used to be a loophole with Windows which they have removed with Windows 8 as OEM versions don’t come with serial numbers on license stickers anymore.
This sounds dubious to me as technically the serial number is meant for the Dell system it shipped with and not to be used on other systems. Unless I’ve misunderstood what they are selling!

Remember that Win7 OEM licencing means these Dell branded discs shouldn't be sold without a Dell PC as per the licencing conditions ....of course what works and what is a legitimate software installation are two very different things.... I'm not trying to be a goody two shoes but merely pointing it out. I couldn't care a less whether people adhere to MS software licences

Win 8 OEM licencing is a different matter though,.

You can activate windows 7 64bit with a 32bit license, you will just have to get a 64bit oem disk.

You almost got it right.

OEM licensed providers, such as Dell, do have a special BIOS made and there is a special bit added to it that the Dell Windows disc checks, along with a certificate file that is included on that disc. If both the BIOS and Disc certificate match, then Windows will install without needing to activate using the oem bulk licensing key. This is usuaully also embedded into the disc, so the user doesn't have to provide it at all if used on a Dell machine.

However, COA stickers are normal keys and are separate from the BIOS/Disc keys and they can be used to activate on any hardware, but you'll need a regular Windows 7 install disc.

If you're struggling to get a Windows 7 COA key, the best thing you can do is be really nice at the people at your local recycle centre and ask if you can take one of the trashed machines COA stickers. They'll mostly be destoryed anyway otherwise. Free keys, not even illegal and almost always activate.. if not wait upto 6 months for the activation hash to reset on the Microsoft servers, and you'll be able to use the key on any new hardware.

Interesting how they get around Ebay OEM rules, they're keeping on the right side of MS OEM licencing conditions by selling the crapped out PC with the software, OEM Win7 cannot legitamately be transferred to another PC but what you do with the software once they supply is up to you of course:

AS PER EBAY RULES ON OEM SOFTWARE "Original equipment manufacturer (OEM), bundled, or recovery software, is included with the purchase of new computer hardware. It is eBay policy that sellers can't list these types of software unless they are selling it with the original hardware." THE ORIGINAL MACHINE IS INCLUDED IN THE SALE.
please arrange to collect computer

ALSO "To comply with eBay policy, OEM software must accompany the necessary hardware as described above, and the hardware must be specific and clearly stated in the listing." THE ORIGINAL MACHINE WILL BE A NON FUNCTIONING LAPTOP THAT HAS HAD THE HARD DRIVE AND RAM REMOVED. THESE ARE NORMALLY BEYOND ECONOMICAL REPAIR AS THEY HAVE BOARD FAILURES, BROKEN SCREENS AND FAULTY KEYBOARDS.

Yep, and no need to find a disc either, download a totally legitimate ISO from Microsoft and use your own key to activate
