Not bad for £160 (with voucher)....do i need it????/

Hot!

This machine is great for the price. Bung Ubuntu Netbook Remix on a partition for a smoother experience, with the option of Windows 7 Starter for non-Linux supporting applications.

Check the dell refurb site, they are like new, and the have one with a n450 processor for 170.00. but no voucher... lol

Bought my wife one of these last year at £200. Still going strong, good piece of kit for basic web browsing etc.

Windows 7 home starter, more than adequate.

Reserved a second one for my step-daughters 21st next January - HOT!

How did you get it for £175? It is £172 ex VAT?

Sorry to be thick.
What is this difference between this and a laptop apart from cd/dvd slot.
I want one for shopping, browsing, email, is this adequate.
Also are they easy to set up
Many thanks in advance

Just a laptop without a cd drive.

Dead easy to set up, Windows 7 more than adequate. Would highly recommend.

can anyone tell me would this be suitable for my children they want to google things write stories i.e word or notepad and they love playing them silly games like poptropica (something to do with a graphics card would this be enough) we have a pc in the home for dvd copying etc or printing assignments thankyou

Sorry - probably being really thick, but you've mentioned £20 voucher...
What £20 voucher is this?
Edited by: "Brotherpukka" 27th Oct 2010

Its the £20 vouchers you get for spending over £100 at mo at argos.
Think if you order for home delivery it says furniture vouchers (thinking that could be a mistake, but not risking it)
If you reserve for pickup i pressume you just get £20 vouchers for anything. Thats better imo

Spend over £100 before 31/10/2010 and get a £10 voucher for November and a £10 voucher for December to use in Argos.

great thanks

Do you happen to have the link to this refurb laptop? I cant seem to find it online.

For the Dell go to...outlet.euro.dell.com/Onl…dfh and order cheapest first. Select the system you want.

and use the code V9WNSR1828DF3D

Yeah, probably about three hours if the eMachines version is anything to go by, but you can always plug it in to the mains if you want longer.

The 1GHz processor is a powerfull wee beast - although it struggles to have a few windows open at once, it does handle Photoshop CS3 easily which surprised me!

Couldn't live with a 3 hour battery life...I got a MSI U115 and while being more expensive, it has huge battery life, especially if you turn off the hard-drive..it has an 8gb SSD system drive...I charge it every 3 days or so and use it regularly for browsing and e-mail...Only XP, but I don't need Windows 7 for e-mail and browsing...I will get ubuntu onto it once it has matured...there are some issues running it on this machine...

Just curious to know what ubuntu will give you that xp Can't if its just email and browsing? or is it an image issue?

At this price you could look at the Packard Bell dot S2 at PC World/Curry's for £229 (From £349) and with an old laptop trade-in, you can get an extra £50 off, making it £179, bargain!

It has an Intel N450 Processor, 1GB Ram, 250GB Hard Drive, Windows 7 Starter, 5in1 Media Card Reader and 3 USB Ports (think it trumps the laptop above on all of them).

It's worth paying a bit extra to get a netbook with with 6 cell battery. 3 hours max just sucks, doesn't mean its that portable really, especially since you got to lug the charger with it

Thanks for that. Ordered one to replace my wife's screen-damaged Samsung. Why hasn't the Dell got it's own entry on hotukdeals? Its a good buy.

Question on the DELL INSPIRON 1012...
On the Dell refurb site it says Windows XP and 1024 x 600 resolution, but every review site I've read says Windows 7 Starter and 1366 x 768. Can someone clarify?

The phrase is "couldn't be arsed"

Using one to type this - £120 from Argos ebay outlet, said refurb but as new. OOS there now, but I would recommend it for web browsing at home. No good as a portable netbook as battery life is poor. Small screen is okay for kids but I wouldn't want to be typing long documents on it.

Very good value for money for what it is, certainly quick enough for most web things, my son loves his.

is it possible to get covers/skins for this as i am looking for a cheap netbook for the daughter but she wants a pink one.

Pick One Up Today ... Many Thanks For Your Post !!!!

The 3 cell + poor keyboard (no proper right shift key) is a deal killer, good price tho

Anyone else have one of these and it suffers from a horrible fan noise? I bought the refurb off ebay and the noise is horrible, it kicks in every now and then.

Yeah, just got one today and the fan noise is pretty bad. Have tried using Speedfan to quieten it down but I've not had any luck yet. If I find a way of sorting it out I'll let you know.

Ok cheers. Apparently its a non variable speed fan, so therefore can only come on intermittently when the temp reaches a certain point. There should be a way to set the temp at which the fan kicks in higher, as most people say that the Atom can take more of a load than that without a need for a fan all the time. It doesnt bother my dad though, so no biggie either way.

I think I'm going to send mine back. The fan stays on most of the time even though the temps are hovering around the low 30's and despite extensive searches I cant find a way of rectifying this.

I suspect thats why argos keep getting them. Its very annoying, and if it was mine I would return also.

Yeah it's a shame. Apart from the fan issue it was a cracking little netbook.

Its not as bad now. Once I removed the bloatware and it had finished all windows updates its not as bad. I could go a step furtherand remove all non essentials, startup items and turn updates off.

Did anyone find a solution to quieting the fan, as it's pretty annoying. Is this a design issue i.e. do all of these suffer from a noisy fan or just some of them?
