Microsoft have just released the consumer preview of Windows 8.

=====================================================

"System Requirements:

Windows 8 Consumer Preview works great on the same hardware that powers Windows 7:

Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster

RAM: 1 gigabyte (GB) (32-bit) or 2 GB (64-bit)

Hard disk space: 16 GB (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)

Graphics card: Microsoft DirectX 9 graphics device or higher

To use touch, you need a tablet or monitor that supports multitouch

To access Windows Store and to download and run apps, you need an active Internet connection and a screen resolution of at least 1024 x 768

To snap apps, you need a screen resolution of at least 1366 x 768

=====================================================

How to install Windows 8 Consumer Preview from an ISO image:

The easiest way to convert an ISO file to a DVD in Windows 7 is to use Windows Disc Image Burner. On a PC running Windows XP or Windows Vista, a third-party program is required to convert an ISO file into installable media—and DVD burning software often includes this capability. One option is the USB/DVD download tool provided by the Microsoft Store. You can also download Windows 8 Consumer Preview Setup, which includes tools that allow you to create a DVD or USB flash drive from an ISO file (Windows Vista or Windows 7 required)."

BUT the real question how hackable is it

This ones basically built all round tablets and the likes isnt it?
Beat me to it
It's awful, truly awful, the whole new layout sucks in so many ways, this will be the downfall of Microsoft im afraid, they should have kept to their old design and not this unfinished mess of and operating system, never in my life of the computer industry have i seen such a mess of an operating system, makes vista look a 5 star o/s and i never throught i'd say that,
Have they tried to make it all touchscreen friendly like the travesty that is the bbc homepage?
Seems like the whole world is sucking up to touch screen design now, whether you want it to or not.

I like my mouse and keyboard, and I'm proud to admit it!
Cold from me. Not really a deal as its not really a free OS. Just an early beta release.

Still time to amend but I hate the touch screen style, its a reason that I hate using the new website design for here.
ohdearohdear

Why are you mad? don't use it then.

thats not the point, there will come a day when they stop supporting 7, what then, other than move to an alternative like linux or mac
Downloading it now, interested to see what it's like.
It has an option to go back to the old style apparently.
Been using Developers preview for a while now, so far I think it's good. Start up is so speedy, and power management is better. The start menu is good for tablet but somewhat clumsy for a normal pc.
Found the Metro overlay thing in the developer preview to be quite annoying.... hopefully you can switch it off

Yes, you are right. If your all so annoyed and not liking the metro interface there is a utility to enable the standard Windows 7 layout. I don't know why people hate it, I love it. In fact I want to use it as my Main OS right off. Windows 8 is really good and a right step for Microsoft with the Hybrid boot etc.

I guess it's a Marmite thing eh?

HEAT but still agreeing with the previous poster. We should have a section for BETAs and Freeware Software like these Windows Beta's and game betas too...
10 minute download on bt infinity. last one was on sky broadband took 9 hours
Could I dual-boot this if I only have 2GB RAM (64-bit)?
Anyone know how long this will run for?
Is the system much different under the GUI though, or is an old style GUI version basically a tweaked Windows 7?
This seems like a great deal. I am still running xp and it is too slow. So I can get this for free!
I have downloaded it but how do I install it on my iPad?
I really don't know if some of the above comments, are attempts to troll oO

lol. XP will be the best OS for an old machine, lightest best OS ever.

Downfall of microsoft should be good news, though. We really need a balanced market instead of an aggressive monopoly. I really want to be able to choose if I want to pay for a MS license when I buy a laptop. And so on...

but plenty of places sell laptops or pc's without OS's nowadays. Your choice.
a) my laptop probably doesn't have the requirements to run this
b) reading comments it's very touchscreen based which doesn't interest me at all

Neither hot nor cold, may benefit some but not me
The Developers Preview sucked so bad.
It's just basically Windows with an additional xbox style 'metro' interface.
Correct me if I'm wrong but unless you've got a touch screen monitor, don't bother looking into Windows 8.

I hope that was on purpose.
simply switch metroUI off and its basically windows 7 with a much quicker start up. supposedly it expires on the 15/01/13
Unbuntu, Unbuntu they use it in the jungle that is OS. Dump MS, evolve, be a shepherd not a sheep!
Also been running the developer edition for sometime in VMware, loving it
Windows 8 beta is awfull, not much they can improve on it to make it better tbh. Had enough of Microsoft last week, so bought an i7 macbook pro. good choice, roll on mountain lion.
i hope its not apple lovers baching microsoft product here.
will give it a try later....
I hope it's not as bad

Apple are gaining popularity and market share. This is the one time I don't want Microsoft to fail!
I have to say I usually support Microsoft software and really like windows 7 and my windows phone. But after using this preview OS I really cannot understand where they are trying to go.This is no good for traditional desktops and In my opinion is a horrible direction to go in. I do like some of the features such as the integration that some of the apps have with different accounts. But the overall experience for me was that it became too complicated to complete simple tasks. I may just prefer the traditional OS that im used to in all honesty

uh huh, the one that integrates all the touch screen stuff from iOS? Hate to break it to you but Apple are heading in the same direction - unifying their OS'.

Where di you get the "beta" from ?
