this is my first ever post, bought this for a self build, saw win 7 deal here on hukd but tesco at Surrey quays only had pro 8, asked them to price check in case and they only charged me 14 quid. don't know if I have done well but it seemed good if I can free upgrade to 10.

Cheap price to upgrade to the, for now, 'free' Win 10.

Delightful91

I guess you missed the word 'pro' in the OP.

Pro versions can upgrade for free, it's the enterprise versions that can't (and they're not available boxed).

I know. I thought he was ridiculing the OP's deal but think I may have been just misunderstood it. The deal is hot and I'd buy if any were available in my local Tesco, sadly my local Tesco never has these deals.

Not at all. From what I have read there will be a few surprises in store for folk who upgrade, certainly if you own a dodgy copy with a auto-inserted key. This is a cheap way to upgrade.

Speaking from experience, this is well worth the purchase - even if you already have upgraded to Windows 10!...

I experienced a system failure and had to reinstall Windows but I had previously purchased a Windows 8 upgrade key.
Therefore when I tried to activate Windows 10 it would fail.

I contacted Microsoft and was read the T's&C's about why it is not working... in short they key was only to upgrade 7 -> 8 and is not valid in Windows 10, so had to pay full price for Windows 10 Pro (£189.99).

Not happy at all! Wish this deal was out 2 weeks ago when my PC failed.
I could have then installed Windows 8 for £14 and run a free upgrade to Windows 10.

Its just a heads up for anyone else who has not got a full Windows 7/8 key and like me purchased an upgrade key in the past.
I am not sure if the same applies to anyone who ever has to reinstall an OEM copy of Windows.

Then why couldn't you have downgraded to 7 and then upgrade to 10?

That's odd as I've never seen MS claim that you can't upgrade to 10 for free if you have a licensed and genuine activated copy of Windows 7/8 regardless of if they were upgrades.

Hope this is national I want windows for my mac

Whoa defo deal ! Pro too so you get rdp...

Yes I thought that on re-reading, so I apologise and hence my delete. Blame my headache and bad mood for the post, I'm not usually so snippy.

Definitely odd. I have upgraded 2 laptops, one from 7 to 10 and another from 7 to 8 (a year ago) and now to 10 - both no problem. But note you HAVE to upgrade, you can't start with a clean install, as noted passim.

My understanding of the situation is that you cannot install a new Windows 10 with a Windows 7 or Windows 8 unused key UNTIL you have upgraded an existing Windows 7 or Windows 8 system using it. After that, you should be able to install a new Windows 10 system with the key.

My experience with a Windows 7 Pro OEM key I purchased recently would seem to bear this out (except I didn't install Windows 10 after I upgraded to Windows 10 with it).

"downgrade"....? I personally don't want my desktop looking like a Lumia phone. (_;) Looking like Windows 7 was the final version of "Windows". A few token features thrown in that vaguely look like you're running Windows is not Windows. I'm going to try out Windows 10 on my laptop but I can't see me ever getting 10 on my PC for the foreseeable future.

roll back to windows 7 or upgrade to windows 8.1 then you will be able to get a genuine copy of windows 10 by Microsoft

Is this Windows 8 pro, not 8.1 pro?

And is this an upgrade version?

The image shows 8 Pro. Quite a vague post.
8 gets upgraded free to 8.1 and then you can get the 10 upgrade.

I'm on my way there now
was there more copies left?

This post could say anything at all, I don't think many of us will be finding a copy of this at their local Tesco for £14.

So, good luck to everyone.

I think I did not understand at all but w7,8,8.1 are all part of the free upgrade program. Does not matter from which one you upgrade you should still get that for free. Even pirated copies of w7 are getting the upgrade for free, lol.
Guys, only make sure that you upgrade for the first time, then you can clean install once your MB is been verified

From Microsoft on activation. (As there seems to be much confusion!)

If you used Windows 10 free upgrade option, you won’t get a unique product key. Your license will be tied to the hardware you upgraded Windows 10 on, not your Microsoft account. Clean installs will activate automatically as long as they are done on the same hardware.

If you upgraded your PC to Windows 10 from a genuine copy of either Windows 8/8.1 or Windows 7, your license will be tied to the hardware you upgrade on, not your Microsoft account, and you won’t get any new product key either. You can verify this using any third-party product key fetching software like ProduKey or The Ultimate PID Checker. They will show you generic product keys like TX9XD-98N7V-6WMQ6-BX7FG-H8Q99 for Windows 10 Home and VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T for Windows 10 Pro edition.

So what if you want to clean install Windows 10 on the same machine? Yes you can do that by downloading an ISO file, turning it into a USB drive or DVD media and then running the setup for clean install. During install, when Windows setup asks you for product key, simply skip the step and let it complete the installation. Once Windows 10 clean install is complete, your copy of Windows will activate automatically as soon as you connect to Internet. This is because Microsoft knows you clean installed on the same hardware. You can always check your activation status from either Settings (WinKey+I) > Update & security > Activation.

No more left in Surrey quays either.

I've had nothing but problems when I upgraded from Windows 8. Can't shut my laptop off any more. Just goes to black screen & the power stays on. At times the menu buttons at the bottom don't work when I click on them. Takes twice as long to power up. Will be installing it, glad I didn't pay for it.

None in my tesco either so is this an expired post?

Anyone else found one at 14.00?

Windows 10 is everything windows Vista should have been.

upgrade, then clean install, it will sort out all the bugs and problems you got

Checked Tesco Extra Chesterfield and nothing. Always find the blokes in the tech corner sound a bit suspect with regards to keeping stuff off shelves so they can buy it all themselves...

bear91

Anyone else found one at 14.00?

Yes, and I left it, so it's still there. * Pro - £14, 8.1 full version - £20. So I took 8.1 for £10 worth of boost. Don't know how many of either are available as they're hidden through the back. So get your bike out and head for Tesco Danestone (Aberdeen)

Anyone want to grab one for me and I'll pay?

Did they have many in?
I may pop down on Thursday

Barcode anyone?

You sound like you perhaps trusted Microshaft, and ignored the need for your laptop to have (graphics drivers obviously) then CHIPSET DRIVERS and laptop/brand-specific POWER SAVING drivers installed. These, for example with Dell, are known as Dell System Utilities, or something similar. Windows 10 should have the drivers included, but as with all Windows one-size-fits-all installers, there will be incompatibilities, even where not expected. It's never as simple as just installing Windows, is what I'm saying. Never.
This is hands-down THE most annoying part of installing a new OS (supported, semi-supported, or unsupported hardware). As the drivers are not always available or obvious.
You can try the drivers for the previous version of the OS (7, 8, or 8.1, whatever is closest and supported for your specific laptop model).

It happens on Linux most of the time. Although the laptop will usually suspend on demand, auto-suspending and proper heat-power micro-management is usually BADLY broken, and the typical Linux Fanboi constantly ignores this. Like their mommas, of "live in mom's basement' stereotype, still pay the whole electricity bill, etc... hmmm).
