Wandering round my local branch (halesowen) and I spot this on the shelf.

Home Premium was also £49.99 and Home Basic £44.99 (both plus VAT)

Seems a bargain to me if you still need/want Vista.

Not voting but for me its £49.98 too much.......Vista is dead, Long live Windows 7 :-D

Long live XP, till any bugs in windows 7 are sorted, as for vista, what a load of *%%#

Long live Mac. As for Windows, enjoy your random freezes, lock-ups, need for extra software, blue screens and viruses!

I must be a lone voice in saying I like Vista! More interesting/useful than XP and we've been running it very happily in our office since launch

Windows 7... not tried it and won't bother for a while.

As for Mac... well that is what I personally choose

Windows 7......it would appear that 7 is the number of drivers that have been released for it so far....

Have you actually used Vista?!?! Only asking because I too was a hater... until I used it  They have patched it and its now running happily on all three of my machines. Dont get me wrong, XP was good (COMPARED TO 98 WHAT WOULDN'T BE??), but I just think this whole "Vista is...." is a bit of a bandwagon with few people ACTUALLY giving a qualified opinion :whistling:

never had a problem with vista, bargain for me

I see Vista is somewhat unpopular with the cold voting masses then lol.

Compared to the prices for it on the internet its a bargain, obviously not for some though.

Enjoy your lack of software

Would be good if there was a free upgrade to 7?

Yeah, Vista was awful before SP1, but when that came out it sorted a lot of issues and was very usable. Windows 7 is better, but Vista isn't as bad as people make out, as long as you put at least SP1 on (and why wouldn't you).

Windows 7 maybe out. But for this price, its worth getting it if you need a legit operating system. So far for me windows 7 is too much like vista.

Vista fine with me to - voted hot

I also am completely happy with Vista Premium SP1.

The trouble is when Vista came out it was so unprepared that nothing worked with it, it was full of bugs. By SP1 it was as solid as a rock. But once you get a bad name, it sticks. The only way to shake it is to change your name, ie. Windows 7 (Vista in a mask).

I am a gamer and I put Vista under a lot of strain, but I have found it to be very stable and reliable. I see no need to get Windows 7, especially as Vista has full DirectX 11 support.

Won't go for it even if they pay me 57.48

I am on vista, don't have a problem with it... have also used windows 7 and will definitely be upgrading to that at some point as it's very good from the little usage I have had!

Not voting though as I can get Windows 7 Ultimate upgrade for about £60.

Vista Premium has been fine for me on my laptop and PC. Never had a crash once in 2 years.

Wouldn't pay £50 for Ultimate tho, not really needed by home users. Premium is fine but wouldn't buy now.

Temperatures were fine, I ran spybot daily, but for some reason if it'd be idle for a few hours it just couldn't handle it. And it's so sluggish, I'd have to wait a good 2 minutes after 'boot up' until things are fully usable and not laggy. Firefox would take around 8-10 seconds to open (on a good day)...now I'm in Win7 and its as quick as a whippet soon as the desktop appears.

Must have been a corruption in your windows system. I can leave Vista on for days and continue playing different games, watch videos, etc, without even rebooting, and I don't get any slow down or crashes. It also boots in 45 seconds as I've disabled most of the eye candy and unnecessary services.

The only time I've had crashes is when playing custom maps for Crysis. This is because they are designed by amateurs and untested, so many custom maps are unstable.

One thing I would add is that I would never do an Upgrade on top of another OS. The whole thing is inviting disaster. Even with a complete install, if you later have problems you will have to reinstall BOTH operating systems all over again!

On the subject of money it seems?:

The fact I don't then have to spend my money on further software that Windows needs that Mac already includes or doesn't need. - Makes me glade I switched to Mac.

The fact my Mac doesn't require upgrading (let alone buying a whole new computer) every time i want the latest OS - Makes me glade I switched to Mac

:whistling:

As for "lack of compatibility with.... anything" fire some stuff at me that you OHH SO BADLY need that Mac doesn't have 'compatibility' for..?

Vista is rock solid after Service Pack 1 and 2 are loaded.

Plus quite a few games run quicker on Vista with SP2 than they do with XP. Seems that Win 7 has a very small increase in FPS in a few games over Vista - but only 1 or 2 FPS - so most people won't notice.

To be fair - all new games play on XP, Vista and Win 7 - so if whatever is working for you is working, then there is no need to change.

Tip: Definately install the 64 bit of Vista or Win 7, otherwise you won;t be able to use any RAM over 3GB ...

I haven't had any random freezes, lock-ups, 'need' for for extra software, BSOD's, or virii my AV couldn't handle in at least 4 years.

The only problems I've ever had were caused by me poking around with things that should be left alone (I'm a techie, it's in my nature).

GTFO fanboy.

No you're not alone. I've been using Vista for over a year now and for how we use the laptops to surf and email it does the job. Have got used to it and can't say I've had any issues with speed either.

3D Studio Max
Games

Those are the things I use the most so can only comment on those. It's why I haven't switched to Linux - I need Windows, because Windows is the best at being compatible with things. Sure, a Mac can run Windows.... but that would be completely defeating the point when you can get better hardware cheaper.

I'm glad you're glade you switched to Mac. Shame they don't have dictionaries to teach you how to spell glad.

It's just fashionable to slate Windows because it's popular. The fact is Windows works, or most people would stop using it, not just those that want to shout "look at me, I'm different" and "ooh, shiny".

yawn mac fanboys
surprised nobodys mentioned linux yet
for anyone waiting 7's worth the upgrade
i was running vista before and it never crashed in the whole time i ran it

I install vista/xp constantly at work. Its fine now. In fact 7 is horribly buggy in comparison at this time.

(btw I use 7)

Not had any probs with 7 so far. Had it installed on the desktop since Saturday. It was a clean install though (so I could go from 32 bit to 64). I've heard upgrading over the top of Vista can cause a few glitches. That's the route I was thinking of taking with the lappy. It's still on Vista, which hasn't been that bad since SP1 but, haters will be haters. They're usually the same people who bitch about Acer's even though they haven't used one or become console fanboys without trying out the opposition just because they read something somewhere. Saves them forming their own opinions I guess.

this is cold from me, as it's from a supplier who sells to business customers, and not to people like me, the joe public consumer.

Also, appreciate it if you post deals with the price including VAT, if I have to pay it, it's not right that it's excluded, just as if it's important to add delivery charges to deals, if that's an unavoidable charge too.

But Win7 is still a fair bit better than Vista (especially where performance on older PC's is concerned), and well worth the extra few quid. So it really doesn't make sense upgrading to Vista now, may as well wait till they iron out the few remaining bugs in Win7 and get that instead.

No doubt, that was never questioned by me, what was questioned was the unfounded comments on here about how crap Vista is when it just isn't. Of course 7 will be better, Microshaft aren't stupid enough to make the same mistake twice (as we ALL know Vista WAS crap before it was patched with SP1), BUT, staying woth this deal, its still a good option for those who want to stay with Vista and let others be the guinea pigs.
