heh heh!

I feel this may have a use for some - I haven't changed my antifreeze in 14 years in one car & 7 years in the other (I have topped up, though!)

plus the windscreen treatment must be worth a few quid

3.15% on TCB brings it down by another £ or so

Q. What's a Duxback Windscreen Treatment?
Duxback is a revolutionary protective film which repels rain, snow and dirt, keeping your windscreen cleaner and clearer all year round. It also reduces the ice build up on the windscreen making it easier to clear on frosty mornings.

In 14 years you’ve not changed the cam belt / water pump? Or got away with no work done on the coolant system? That’s quite impressive!

hang on, I didn't say the first bit

on the 14YO, I did change the belts after 100,000 km or so (about 5 or 6 years ago) - they were nearly as good as new - I am not that knowledgeable about cars and having read Honest John, I do now realise changing the water pump is a good idea - I have now passed 200,000 kms and might just hold back on the belts a bit, but change the water pump this time

I'm not sure why you would need to do more than top up coolant from time to time - does it go bad after 14 yrs? - the boys in my garage checked its efficacy about 6 years ago by dipping a rod of some sort in it - I was going to drive it to -15C in Europe - and they said it was fine

the other car 7YO is a BMW so doesn't have belts AFAIK - should I change its water pump do you reckon?

Unless your car is ancient, a complete coolant change is not necessary. Most cars manufactured over the past 10 years or so have sealed for life cooling systems. I have owned tens, and tens, of cars over very many years, and never changed the fluid unless there was a leak, or obvious contamination of some sort. I would rather keep the factory installed coolant than have it tampered with by someone in one of these 'fast fit' places.

Why do manufacturers have it in their service sheets to change the coolant after 3 years (some say 5 years)?

Also why is blue coolant sold as 3 year and red/pink coolant say 5 year protection.

Where can I buy good for lifetime coolant?

explain how coolant systems can be sealed for life please? when you change the water pump a loss in coolant is inevitable? so how do you top it up? also antifreeze / coolant loses its attributes over time.

Just do away with Coolant/Anti-Freeze changes altogether and put in Waterless coolant you never have to change it, it doesn't pressurise, it's more expensive than Anti-Freeze but once it's in it's in unless your cooling system fails them it would need replacing. If you put Waterless coolant in your vehicle for the first time you also need a product that absorbs any remaining water based coolant before using Waterless Coolant this can be used more than once if you filter out contamination

My Volkswagen service manual makes no mention of a coolant change at any of the 18 or 19 service pages in the book, and I was advised at time of purchase, earlier this year, that VW Antifreeze/coolant is now Lifetime unless it has to be drained to fix any part of the cooling system.

So, I am only stating the facts as I have them.
