It’s sad that the unsung heroes that clean our streets, collect our bins and treat our sewage, the people out there who prevent a national health crisis and thereby save thousands of lives each year ,get ignored.
What about us traffic light engineers? If I accidentally put the green light where the red should go, it would cause havoc. We get no thanks at all and have to pay full price for everything........

Better conditions and pay than sewage workers. The NHS is a better gig than most workers get to be honest and it really needs modernisation, especially to tackle the £1.5 billion lost annually through staff fraud and theft.

NHS staff go through years of training and are put through so much stress every single day (amplified more during the holidays). If you knew someone who worked as a doctor, nurse, paramedic etc. Then perhaps you'd be a bit more understanding on why we are more thankful for them.

This is just marketing nothing more. The worst paid people in the NHS are sub contractors that won't be able to get this. It's not about helping people in need, it's getting free advertising.

I’m just more thankful for the people that get up to their necks in what we throw away and provide us with clean streets, and safe water. That save thousands of lives each year by preventing illness and disease. Those people who do it silently, for often low pay, and don’t need an ego boost or think they are special. This Xmas, thank your bin men for what they’ve done all year, tell a street sweeper you appreciate the job they do, and thank that sewage worker for helping to ensure you have an almost unlimited supply of water and for processing your excrement.

You are really stretching your narrative....
Upto their necks- you clearly have never worked as bin man. Its not generally as you decribed it, as i recall, we would be at the depot at 5am to start at 6 and we would finish by 1pm. It was repetitive work but nothing unusual. Sometimes on the odd day or two, we could be lucky and find items that had been disposed that could be re-used.
Low paid jobs? -Whats an average starting salary of a bin man vs average starting salary of a nurse? Keep in mind that allied health student now have to pay tuition.
Clean streets - i'll give you that..
Safe water - thought that was done in in a treatment plant...could be wrong.
Do it silently ....thats how it should be anyway
thank your bin men...what about the posties, lollipop lady/man, policeofficer, shopkeepers, your local MP?...or is it just limited to that specific group?
Sewerage worker?.... Which role are you referring to specifically? Its a Sewerage plant.

I for one am thankful that these private business are offering these kind of goodwills regardless of which groups are targeted. These kind of initiatives should be encouraged rather than criticised as the costs are carried by the business and not the taxpayer.
You would never see people moaning about charity groups but i suppose there are those who do

Fraud and theft figures are the NHS’s own. It’s inefficient and poorly run-that comes from the union and staff who would also complain about any attempt at change.

Are you serious my friend?
I work at London ambulance past 12 years.
I drive blue light vehicle and I'm on the top of the band 3 which was 16000 initially.
I couldn't afford to pay rent for two bedroom flat in London from my wage so I had to move to Kent and now commute 2 hours daily to and from work.
Are you still sure 100% I've better conditions then sewage workers? I'm not starting about stress and loads they put on us so youngsters leave just couple of months after they start.
ANY PRIVATE COMPANY CAN BEAT NHS PAY THESE DAYS MATE!

Good points, this is a definite PR stunt but that does not bother me because it's giving free food to NHS staff. Obviously businesses can't do this without a return in investment from the advertising and hoping staff become repeat customers.

Stop talking utter rubbish. Poorly run and inefficient? The NHS is one of the cheapest and most efficient healthcare systems that exist in the world - it would be a much better system if it wasn’t chronically underfunded.

then you blame the staff, you tool.

unions are there to protect wages and workers rights .

Lol you really know nothing do you. I use to be a bin man and it's a very easy job and I loved it. It's good money now and it's 10x easier than it was 20 years ago when you had to carry bins on your back. How old are you.

Hmmm, like many stats that seems alarming, until you add context. That's only 1.5% of the NHS annual budget. Its a lot, because the NHS is huuuuuuuge

According to the National Crime Agency, overall fraud in the UK costs £190bn - 6.7% of the £3 trillion UK economy. Therefore, fraud in the NHS runs at nearly 5 times LESS than in the UK as a whole. To me, that sounds like NHS is already doing VERY successful job of managing fraud and theft, relative to everyone else.

And remember - that 1.5 billion includes international super-criminal things like staff "illegally" avoiding parking charges at the hospitals at which they work and nurses not returning their used uniforms when they leave service or even just transfer to a different health authority.

Meanwhile - fraud in the form of illegal tax avoidance alone in the UK runs at £35 bn per year. Money laundering just through the UK banking industry is £90bn pa. Not only are these not being addressed, they're being actively eased through UK policy decisions.

I think your ire could be better directed... #justsaying.

Given there are loads of parties that is obvious, but Conservatives won a massive majority and that shows the country wants Brexit done. Yep
Same with the USA with Trump People are like oh he didn't won the popular vote
But he won states with a landslide than they say Electoral college is flawed when it's the perfect system so towns, villages, small cities don't get dominated by people in New York and California, in UK I think the system is similar right? You've got to win chairs so it doesn't matter if everyone in London and other big cities want Labour if people in North and towns want Conservative

Labour used to be alright till people like Tony Blair, Jeremy Corbyn, Diane Abbot came along
Offering stupid dystopian things like Government run Free WiFi costing the country 100s of billions and destroying tons of businesses who can't compete, not only is it stupid but pretty damn Dystopian to have state controlled everything
Than Labour party basically runs out like oh we have rich w**kere like Hugh Grant, Lily Allen, Owen Jones and Stormzy, you know Stormzy fellow the kids the same guy who is worth tens of millions and raps about committing crime and doing drugs

Completely agree, first past the post works the best. No system is completely perfect but I am yet to see a better alternative.

Labour was okay when it was more centre ground, but now they are being too socialist, Corbyn is a disaster. It's odd how all the famous rich people seem to be supporting Labour, same thing happens with Democrats in US but that won't stop Trump winning again in 2020.
