The latest example of just how much a terrific documentary series can benefit from the Blu-ray format, Wonders Of The Solar System is a fascinating six-part series that simply looks stunning in high definition.
Presented by Professor Brian Cox, the series takes time to investigate the solar system around us, and the many natural beauties contained within it. Across the episodes, Cox covers the likes of planets themselves, the rings of Saturn, the question of whether we’re alone in the universe, and the sun itself.

What lifts Wonders Of The Solar System above the many shows that have tackled the subject before, however, are two factors. Firstly, it’s Cox himself, an enthused and interesting host, who explains things well and really helps make accessible the material. Secondly, it’s the utterly stunning visuals. The BBC has mixed in CGI along with images sent directly from space to quite breathtaking effect.

And this, inevitably, is where the Blu-ray kicks in. Wonders Of The Solar System simply looks wonderful in high definition, with the visuals coming across terrifically well. On DVD, this all looked very impressive. Here, it’s simply brilliant, and the end result is a series that can sit alongside Planet Earth as an example of just what Blu-ray can do for material of this quality and ilk. --Jon Foster

I just bought this as well, fantastic series, great price.

Not seen this before, heard nothing but great things. Seems a stonking price for a new release, have some heat.

Ta. Time I got in there!

Been out about a year, the new series Wonders of the Universe is on the TV now and on Blu-Ray April 4th.

good work. just bought one. heat added

This is one of those shows that would benefit from re-watching in HD - great price too, heat.

PS. Has anyone noticed that the tv ads for the 'Wonders of the Universe' series has nicked the chord sequence straight from Danny Boyle's Sunshine movie? That can't be a coincidence!!

Great price! I've been holding off purchasing these, and the Life series. Don't know how much longer I can! lol.

Interestingly enough, it works out £6.05 cheaper to purchase this, and pre-order Wonders of the Universe on blu-ray @ The Hut or Zavvi instead of pre-ordering the boxset. Just incase anyone was interested :-P

Brian Cox was the scientific advisor for that movie

1080p or typical BBC 1080i?

It's £6 cheaper to purchase them seperately if you see my earlier post

this is on play.com for 8.99, would work out less than amazon with quidco or topcashback

brilliant

Amazing factoid, I will remember this and impress someone if it comes up in conversation

I'm going to wait for whatever format replaces Blu Ray.

LOL!

Seriously tho, Brian Cox really annoys me in the current series when for half of the programme all you see is his silhouette in various poses! Not sure if it's the same in Wonders of the solar system. Also found myself nodding off at different stages...I was pretty tired tho X)

ordered thanks

Ordered- Thanks

yeah he was in D:Ream.......FACT

Great series. Even better in Blu-Ray. Ordered!

Cheers

the Rockstar Physicist returns!

Great price, Prof Cox is excellent. The best science presenter on tele, and did you notice how I said 'the best' not 'we think he's the best' or 'one of the best'? I said 'the best' because he is and that's a fact ;-)

Still is of sorts. In an interview on the radio he said he has played on a few tracks for their 'new' album.

Might have to buy a new telly now.
