WoW! Film buff's top 50 DVD movies of all time - cheapest prices here!!! Check it out!

Cinema experts have named the 50 films they believe everyone should see before they die - So I decided to see how cheap I could find them all!!!

These would all be great additions to any collection, although there are a few in there that I am dubious about, and would not put in my top 50! Some are excellent though, such as Alien, Apocalypse Now, Trainspotting...and many more! There are a few here that will be going on my DVD rental list. I'll tell you the truth - I've seen 18 of these movies - what about you, tell us how many you have seen in the forum.

I have found the cheapest price for each - disregarding special editions, widescreen editions etc. If you want those, you'll have to have a peep for them yourself.

Wow, this is an excellent post, one of the best I've seen so far!!! Thanks!

Update: watched 12 out of 50.

Why oh why o why was Leon (the Professional) not in this list
Great post though, really helpful!

(ps, I know it's not a personal list, but based on the C4 show of the weekend, but Leon should be there!)

Thanks for your compliments guys I agree with boydent about Leon - one of my faves to. I agree with alien and also think planet of the apes should be in there as well!!! 10 out of 50's not bad...! I wanna know which forum member has seen the most!

I've only seen 10 too and only 1 of those is in the top ten! (Donnie Darko & I thought it was rubbish!! - obviously I'm not a film critic - lol  )

Great miniman, that's exactly what I needed! Sometimes the search engines don't show up the best deal, and as you can see I had quite a few to find!! I'm adding those into you post now, and reputation for you!! http://www.hotukdeals.com/forums/images/custom_buttons/reputation.gif

Edit - Actually I'm not adding 2001 as the price including delivery is cheaper from SelectCheaper...

And Thanks Kath! That took quite a while to compile!

Nice thread... deserves a vote.

I thought that the whole purpose of the list was to promote the fact that film4 is now free. So rather than being the 50 best films it is more "the 50 best films that film4 have the rights to" or just "50 films that film4 have the rights to"

All the films on the list should be shown on film 4 in the next couple of weeks. So if you added up the total cost of all the DVDs, bought yourself a DVD recorder and 50 blank disks.

Thanks for the vote ducko!

I got this from an article on ]bbc news lawrenzi, I didn't realise it came from Film Four. I still think it's a pretty nice collection...

best movie ever is Ronin

LMAO! I fell asleep in that one! Could not stand it! It shows how different we all are...!

must be a male thing

Well compiled emma, it's nice to see someone dedicated to taking time out to help others.

And I personally think Hellboy and The Langoliers should be somewhere in the list, but then again as it's bias to film four then they are limited.

Oh and emma, I have clicked your link a few times in the past but what am I supposed to do after clicking it to help you?

That's all you have to do beerie. It's a competition that counts hits apparently... It's over at the end of August, so I'll just wait and see what happens. Thanks for your compliments on the list. I haven't seen the Langoliers, that's another one for my DVD rental list!

Nice list Emma

Pink Flamingos Region 1 ]http//ww…028 £10.99 includes delivery

No region 2 though...

Very nice list, although the majority of those films seem really bad for a top 50 list?! An Apocolypse Now must have been one of the biggest disappointments and waste of time I think I've had with a film, did anyone else think it was terrible? Apart from a few good scenes, it was just odd, esp near the end...

And as mentioned earlier, where is LOTR, Matrix, Green Mile, Leon and a whole host of terrific films, Godfather always comes quite high up although its not one of my faves personally...odd list! But hey ho, each to their own Blimey now I've started compiling a top 50 film list in my mind, its going mad! ARGH!

Oh, and I've seen 13, and to be honest, think thats about as much as is needed on that list!

Amazing post Emma, thanks.

I've seen 17 and have another one bought on DVD to watch soon. I enjoyed the program on Channel 4 so I'll try to watch some more from the list, even the ones I hadn't heard of, especially if they are on Film4.

Is it definitely true that Film4 are showing them all soon or even have the rights to them? I only recognise Apocalypse Now, Lost in Translation, Sexy Beast (already been on and don't see a repeat), Trainspotting, Shawshank Redemption in the schedule for the next couple of weeks (but I didn't check it too carefully and RT isn't showing me the one after midnight without extra clicks) and they're all well known.

I think some expected "top 50 films ever" are missing because it's "top 50 films to see before you die". A nice variety of genres, directors etc, for example Francis Ford Coppola is represented by Apocalypse Now and doesn't need The Godfather in there too, even though that's also a film worth seeing. According to the BBC news article (I missed the start of the program), "each film has been chosen for its unique and creative approach to filmmaking".

Some odd choices in there, no doubt. City of God is probably my favourite from the list but where is American Beauty, The Usual Suspects, as somebody said, Leon! Herzog's best film, for my money is Grizzly Man, not Aguirra (hard film to watch). Good post though!

Nice list.
I have to say though that their choices for top 50 films are pretty odd. Must be films that are going to be shown on film4 soon.

There are quite a few amazing films that aren't on the list and quite a few really pants ones that are on the list - guess that because it is "50 films to see before you die" they have picked films not because they are great or the best films but because they are a bit different to most other films.

Great post indeed Emma. I too find the list strange to say the least...!Where are the old classics like To Kill a Mocking bird, or indeed Gone with the wind? Moving forward a few decades, there's no classic westerns, no Deer Hunter, no Full Metal Jacket...Finally, where on else is Goodfellas?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!

Or indeed, where on earth...

Thanks we8vale, ali, greenfeld, 0d0d, nrps1 and Ray.

I agree it is a bit of an odd list, but it opens your eyes to movies you may never have though of. We could argue all night as to which movies should be in the Top 50... maybe we should have a poll, with all the members voting and have a HUKD top 50!

Yeah!! Let's have a HUKD list!! :-D

 How on earth can Star Wars not be in the top 50?

I've been making my way through the Channel 4 programme of this that I recorded and have to say it's pretty hard work in places.

It's worth noting that it's not the best 50 films of all time but 50 to see before you die and that rather coincidentally they seem to pretty much all happen to be in Channel 4's archive with them playing them soon now that Film 4 is now free.

I have to say that if I was in a hospice about to die many of these would not be on my wish list to watch before I pop my clogs. ;-)

Welcome also to gadgetman... I'm trying to develop a HUKD list, watch this space.

Lol, cheers.

By the way, what happens if you go out and buy all of these films and your doctor then tells you you've only got 24 hours to live. That would be a bit annoying or what?

Original Poster

If I had 24 hours to live, I wouldn't be watching movies, I can tell you that!!! Anyway, check this out:

They're probably not in the Channel 4 archive. I believe the whole thing is a promotion for their film archive with a lot of the 50 list being played imminently.

It was a list chosen by a panel of experts. It's not going to be the same as a list voted for by the public or based on box office or DVD popularity. Film4 aren't showing many off the list in the next 2 weeks (and only ones I'd already heard of) so if they're trying to advertise 50 of their own films they're not doing a good job.

Everyone wondering why their favourite films weren't on the list needs to vote for their favourite films instead.
