Heat....but Id prefer to buy from a High St shop where I can easily return it, because every Microsoft XBox One Controller (except an Elite one) failed with dodgy joystick up/down drift and had to be returned for replacement.

Elite do that too. It's the same thumbstick module that develops drift across both IIRC.
You may have just got lucky with the elite model that you had.
I notice that controllers aren't made as homogenously as we might like to think. Some controllers that are new I've opened and thought it had been assembled by an amateur so I've stripped it down and rebuilt it to be perfect.

Ive got a broken down now at the mo, not done anyhing to it but strip it down and apply copious amounts of Mr Sheen, I reassembled it and voila, it doesn't work just as well as before, Result! You seem to know a bit about it, whats my next move?

Why did you put Mr Sheen on it?
I use antibacterial wipes carefully on it and/or surgical spirit as my preference.

If you have thumbstick drift you will need to get another thumbstick module, desolder the old one and solder in the new one. It's a bit of a faff and not with it for most people as they CBA

The Mr Sheen bit was not strictly accurate, I used cold porridge instead. I don't own a soldering iron though, but if i stick it under the grill for a bit it should desolder ok. Thanks for the tip.

If you can remove just the welds on the thumbstick module and successfully solder a new module in there with the grill in your kitchen I will bow down and salute you.
God knows what magic you could achieve equipped with just some duct tape and a hammer!
