With the latest gyrostabilisation technology you will be whizzing in the air with the X5 Syma Drone. Perfectly suited to both indoor and outdoor flight. Featuring 4-channel movement, this drone can be flown in both the standard manner as well as in a headless mode that orients the controls to the direction the user is facing, rather than the direction of the drone. This is a great drone for beginners. My 11 year old loves it. This is a very hot deal. Bargain. Thanks
Stock in Gt Yarmouth.
Thanks for the post. i was about to grab the Parrot one from PCWorld as my other half needs something to practice with until I spend a small fortune! Off to Halfords.
Which would be best to occupy a 10 year old for as long as possible, this or a Air Hogs DR1 for £30?

Make sure you buy the X5-1 as the original X5 is being sold by lots on ebay as they know it has serious faults!

You can mod the aerial inside and on the controller - I get over 100 metres now and you can buy cheaper long lasting batteries on ebay for a few quid!

Great copter for beginnners but watch those trees lo
Motors burn out quickly if you leave them on when they hit a tree etc but easily replaced for a few quid.

Looks like this is the original X5 as I cannot see anywhere on the box, instruction manual or drone itself to say otherwise.
BTW mines not working, even tried charging the battery and it still won't work. Looks like I have a faulty one. If your planning on giving one as a present then please check that it's working first.
They have them in Lidl too

Thats because they are trying to get rid of all the sub standard first version.
Check google first ALWAYS before you buy!
There are a few ways to tell - the writing on the top is different colour for a start.

You can also buy a special charger off ebay that charges 6 batteries at a time.
I got 5 batteries larger capacity than those provided with the copter and the charger for less than £10.

ebay.co.uk/itm…XTQ

Believe me you will need extra batteries - its very addictive and it only lasts 10-15 minutes on the one battery so best to have a few ready on hand!

To be honest you are better with the X5C-1 the camera version is so much more fun and the little camera isnt actually that bad!

You can also get different blades on ebay but beware the 4 blade version doesnt work well.

Thank you for the feedback, looks like I will return mine tomorrow for a refund and not bother with a replacement of the same model.
thanks Omendata for warning - tried looking to find out how to tell between original & the revision but struggling to find away to tell them apart - i've got 2 reserved for kids and not sure if i should get them or not.

thanks for the link, i saw that one before but as it was for the x5c & x5c-1 and nearly all reviews and discussion are about the one with the camera, it didn't help to differentiate. Anyhow, I'm thinking that it may be worth spending a few quid more and getting a camera version even if its 2mp, its only for a youngster. I've got till Tuesday to pick mine up will do a bit more research. What I do like about these Syma ones is that there is a huge aftermarket mods and parts available and all reviews are wholly positive.

This version is the X5, which from what I've read is the first original version with the x5c & x5c1 and other various models being produced after. (newer & better models)
Got one thanks

What are the faults, my kids have been flying theirs all around the house with no problems today. I've tried googling but all I can seem to find is complaints relating to the camera version....

Distance for one and some say the electronic control board has manufacturing faults.
The x5c-1 also has better stability in the air!
The original wobbles about like Diane Abbott's double chins!

The faults only become apparent after a few months use - like the rotor motors sticking.
You will eventually notice one or more motors are slower than others.

You are far better off with the camera version.
You will have oodles of fun watching your kids and yourself climbing trees to get it down!
>;0)
Syma are one of the better cheap models as there are plenty of cheap parts and mods on ebay.
You can also mod the copter for longer distance - mine goes over 100mtrs and has new leds, a nice paint job and bigger batteries.

I bought one last week when the deal first came out, it is really good for the money, quite stable, some of the cheap ones are too difficult to fly but I managed to get to grips with this in five minutes and I sick at stuff like this.

It is a good thing to buy before jumping into an expensive model!

BUY BUY BUY!8)

No camera might mean you can fly it without proximity restrictions? Worth checking.
Great one to learn on, the 5C1 is far more stable and you have the cam but you can add the cam with a few quid more on other sites. And don't be a **** with it and follow ALL legal guidelines where you can fly and range. fed up with idiots ruining it for us hobbiests and certified fliers.
Suggest you do NOT do the range mod.
If you want to fly longer and further get a cert and spend the money on an adult drone

which batteries did you buy?
None in or near basingstoke...pants. Wanted for my boy. Bought a copter from maplin which lasted 1/5 hour and no spares available, so I was hoping to get this as it will be easier to fly and has spares available.
Anyone know of a good alternative for a 9 year old?

lol bit of a difference between this £30 drone and a £1000 DJI or Parrot!
Cert will also cost you £100's

Most cheap sub £100 drones only do up to 100mtr!

You want 4000ft and more you are talking £1000+
I wouldnt even trust myself let alone a child with something that costly but each to their own maybe you have lots of dosh to splash but then again why would you be on here!

The best piece of advice is to avoid flying near trees - I spent most of my time climbing through Gorse bushes, trying to find extra long sticks to dislodge it from branches and climbing up oak trees to retrieve the thing when the wind catches it and flings it into the nearest bush! Seriously get a camera with it - nothing funnier than seeing a 50 year old man climbing a 70ft oak tree and getting stuck halfway or a branch snapping and falling 20 feet onto your girlfriend lol The fire brigade might not be too happy though!

Even taking it down the beach freaked me out by flying it over the water - one wrong move and its splash fizzle ..gone!

Flying a drone for your first few months is actually quite a scary experience and makes your heart pump like mad and not just from running after it to keep the range or in view - its actually like having a workout in the gym so forget that new year gym membership and jsut get a drone lol

Cheerson, Walkera, Hubsan, JJRC all cheap makes but nice prices!
You can actually get better beginners drones than the syma x5c-1 now - ones that have return to base if you lose sight is a very useful option to have which the syma doesnt and if you can get one that works with a smartphone even better!

I am looking at the JJRC H16 YiZhan Tarantula X6
It has all of that and a 5MP camera for £50.

JJRC H37 is nice only £25.

Depends how much you want to spend and what you need - this one is also nice

tomtop.com/p-r…816

Beware though - once you start you will be hooked whatever age you are from 5 - 90.
One of our oldest fliers is 97 and he is a master of his 3DR Drone much better than me but he used to be a Spitfire pilot so I guess he has more real life experience lol
