Not bad at all for a 2GB / 16GB Rom box, I ended up getting a 1GB some time ago and being pained by dragging it's heels. I paid a little more than this at the time too. Would suggest a minimum of 2GB Ram if you're looking for a box at the moment.

The film and media companies are now going after the addon authors, many of the addons are shutting down, many of the UK ISPs are blocking the addons, and with the closure of Ares Wizard, most of the builds are impossible to get hold of / install.Yes, a VPN will enable you to sidestep the ISP blocking issue, but if the addons are no longer available, it doesn't matter.I'm annoyed by this as I used to use the awesome Apollo build but stripped out most of the addons. I just liked the way that it was set up with the Aeon Nox Silvio skin for use with my own media library.Wiped my Kodi at the weekend and now that Ares Wizard is gone, so are almost all the good builds.

So basically you are complaining that illegal content is being blocked and builds containing illegal streams etc are being closed down? This has nothing to do with the box. Heat for price.

And illegal streaming and isp blocking should happen. Don't use kodi or builds for illegal uses and it won't be an issue.

The scaremongering around these products is ridiculous. There's a huge and fast growing selection of legitimate media providers such as Netflix, amazon and so on available on these platforms. What this actually should be seen as is a lower power consumption device which can turn a non smart TV into a very smart environment. A cursory glance at the unboxing reviews in YouTube should be enough to educate people that these android architecture devices are capable video and "arcade" gaming devices, not just an outlet for people to stream illegal content. Also, if like me you have all your digital media on a Network Access Storage (nas) drive, they are a really convenient way to access films, TV and music. People who are spouting on about the impending legal ramp up on illegal content are doing the capability of these a huge disservice. This is a credible alternative to Windows or Linux platform if the overall objective is to watch media content. If it wasn't there wouldn't be products like the Nvidia Shield.

I agree, I don’t watch online streams. I just torrent anything I want and use the box to watch off line

Excellent price for a 2GB/16GB

Something doesn't add up here. The 8GB/1GB version costs more and adding a cheap £7 remote somehow adds $35 to the total cost.

Is it best going for the S905X chip instead?

Will it run Amazon video and nowtv?

Well £22.80 on Gearbest so probably right, only negative for price no usb3.

I agree, good box, and heat for the price, but with regard to the rest of your comment.

Lol, read my post again pal.

So just for clarity before your high horse rides off into the sunset I was stating TWO things.....

1) I was ADVISING those that use these Kodi boxes for illegal content (and I honestly believe that most who purchase them do) will probably not be able to use them for that anymore.

2) I was COMPLAINING that the build I use is no longer accessible. As I said "I strip out most of the add-ons". I use the build because of the way that the skin is configured, the backdrops it supplies, the menus and list views that are pre-configured. This can save me about 5 hours of set up time each time I refresh my HTPC. I do retain some of the addons that access illegal content (like UK Turks), but generally use them to access legal content that can be accessed via iplayer (not found an iplayer addon that works as well as UK Turks, or stand alone iplayer).

And lets be honest, even ripping your own media is illegal, or at least it was when I gave up reading the endless amateur lawyers arguing about it, which pretty much bins Kodi.

The only legit uses I can think of for these are Amazon, Iplayer and Netflix.

You... do know that... Kodi isn't just there to give you... illegal plugins... right?

Considering Kodi is far more than just a platform to stream, or no longer stream, illegal content, there are far other uses for these boxes.

It's a shame that these boxes have gained a reputation for illegally streaming content as they're perfect little media players.

The numerous Android streaming apk's all seem to still be working just fine. I found Kodi beyond frustrating but the apk's are much more reliable.

Yeeeeeeeeeesssssss, please see my post above. I've used Kodi as a front end for my own personal media collection since it was XBMC on the original Xbox fyi. Although entirely ripped frpm my own discs (or downloaded replication of discs I own), is still probably illegal.

Many people will buy these boxes thinking they can stream, and will be disappointed when they find they can't. Although, others clearly don't, I have some sympathy for them, thus my post.

Silly though, they don't go after Chrome or Firefox when you can get exactly the same sources that way. It's just because it's made it easy for people. It should really tell them something about the industry.

havnt been able to update my box for ages so virtually unusable. Given recent court decisions regarding Kodi are these boxes of any use at all ?

I think its David & Goliath. Except Goliath wins. The Ares Wizard, doesn't host any illegal content, neither do the streaming add-ons. They are not illegal, however if you are a small team of unpaid developers and are facing the might of the RIAA are you going to spend hundreds of thousands of $ fighting the RIAA (and potentially years in court) or are you just going to call it a day and get your coat.

Google has teh muscle to give teh RIAA a big two finger salute.

The Android OS can still be used for Netflix, Amazon Video, Spotify etc. If NowTV works the same as Sky go, it won't work over HDMI.

Kodi can be used for a private media collection and illegal streaming if you have a VPN, (although the addons for this are up and down like a yo yo), but other than that, they are no better than a cheap android tablet. In fact an amazon fire stick or an android tablet and a chromecast is probably far more user friendly.

Depends... is your phone useful to you other than making phone calls? Big screen Android gaming, mini computer with email etc, USB stick easy access. There's always a use I suppose.

Totally agree with both your comments. If I didn't feel like I was getting royally ripped off these days for digital media streaming, I would be happy to pay the price to watch content online (not that you even said you were using it for these purposes). After all, it's not like I want to download the content to keep, I want to stream it. Prices for streaming these days is ridiculous considering it's digital media, and are far cheaper to reach the consumer than it's ever been.

I have zero guilt that these huge conglomerate companies are receiving slightly less profit for their crime because people are refusing to be ripped off.

wonder if the bt sports app works on this

geekbuying? no thanks!

This may be a dumb question but does anyone know if these boxes can be used as an alternative to a freeview set-top box i.e. record and watch back a freeview tv show? The choices for Freeview set-top boxes appear to be only Humax and Panasonic and both seem to have crap reviews nowadays.

You can get usb tv tuners that plug in and record and some boxes have it built in, the interface on the ones I have used is not slick like a freeview box and it only had now and next not the 7 day full epg. In the end I went on ebay and got a Bt youview + box for about £35 (model DTR T2100) they have full epg & 500gb hard drive and a remote record app plus iplayer and netflix etc... Android boxes are good for lots of things but in my experience freeview isn't one of them

Mi box 3 is also competitively priced and the one I ended up purchasing. Have experienced no problems. Good price posted by the op for an alternative box.

They're not exactly a secret.

Any point buying these boxes when you can use a Amazon firestick 2.. ??

You can watch all of uk catch up tv perfectly, Netflix HD, Kodi and any other APK app you want. All work at a decent speed without annoying slowdowns or frame drops.

It all just works and you get constant firmware update development unlike these android boxes that are nearly all neglected after release.

Yes, this is a restricted processor that can only do 30fps 4K

Can I use this as a NAS? Does it have a hdd sharing feature?

FYI, I knew that already

Ripping is a grey area but hey ho, you'd have to look into the law. I'm no expert.

I've since moved to Plex anywho, the benefits have won me over.

for anyone stuck with an old kitkat 4.4 box, yes you can use new Kodi, try the MyGica build.

has saved me buying new boxes for now!

xctechsfiles.com/myg…24/

may not be latest build, i can't be bothered to search all links right now sorry, it does work though and lets you run latest addons.

edit: i remembered i got it via Aptoide, try that.

btw, i propose that 4k support is irrelevant on these boxes for most people, because you'll never realistically stream it and by the time you do, android 7 will no longer be supported by whatever software you need. it's hard finding 1080 content lol.

Good price for the box

Decent Price. Kodi Add-ons aren't going anywhere. As one closes another opens. In addition there are other Streaming Apps available. But regardless these boxes are great. Pair it with a Wireless Keyboard & Mouse and your TV becomes close to a PC. Stream Media, Browse the Internet. Check Social Media. Play Games. Play Internet Radio. Great wee boxes. Far better than my Smart TV.
