damn sight cheaper than the premium

eh, that's because it contains less funcionality of the premium.

Which won't be much use because the core doesn't have the hard drive to download them to.

not particularly as makro are doing the premium for £199 + vat so for £40 more you can have the premium one

£189 is about the normal price for the Core.
I think it's pointless getting one as you'll need to buy a hard drive if you want Live.
Also missing is the convenience of wireless pads

How can you say wireless pads are a convenience you have to change batteries --- ive got a core and my wired pads great as i plus it in and dont have to worry about anything + i can use it on my pc with ease

You dont really need a hard drive i did fine for a couple of months with about 6 games but i got a hard drive on ebay fir £35 so i jumped at the chance

The batteries last for ages and even the rechargable ones are really good. Wireless is more convenient than wired, it's a fact. Wii, PS3 and all the future consoles will have wireless pads because that's what the gamers have been asking since the Wavebird came out. I wouldn't buy a core just to be able to use the pad on my PC. PC pads cost less than £2 these days.

You admit that two months later you had to buy a hard drive, won't everyone here who buy this core pack today have to get a hard drive too like you did? You got a "chance" to buy a hard drive on eBay for £35. Can you guarantee everyone else that they'll get one on eBay or in the shops for the same price?
Stores like Makro are selling the Premium pack for £234 and it's just a matter of time before other shops drop their prices. The core pack was a mistake and Microsoft knows it - they asked all the shops to drop its price by £10 not long ago as they weren't selling.

i bought some great wireless pads for my ps2 and never looked back

I note the core only comes with a standard definition video cable, so if you want to to view the HD output (one of the big selling points of the 360) you will need to buy another video cable. Of course you need a HD display to go with that which not everyone has. If you don't need the extras the premium comes with the core may save you a little money now, but I suspect in the long run it will end up costing more when you upgrade to include a HD, HD cable, and get fed up with cables trailing around and buy a wireless controller. I got some wireless controllers for our xbox - much neater solution and no kids tripping over cables!

With the suggestions that Xbox 360 v2 is on the horizon, I think it may well be worth holding off a little until those are confirmed (or denied) as some better deals are sure to come.

The core was for someone like my who only had about £200 to spend and bought the extras later when he had more cash

Also if your 360 messes up and take it back you have to send the hard drive back so you would lose all your saves

Only if the fault is with the hard drive, otherwise you do not have to.

I'm sure the core is fine if you are on a tight budget, but in the long term it is not the cheapest for most.

Indeed you don't need to send the hard drive if it's not broken. I'd tell people to be patient and wait till they get that extra bit of cash to afford a Premium.
