I'm almost in the market for getting a 360 again... does the E actually have any advantages over the S? Everything think I've read suggests not.

No, they just took out a few ports to save money, it has this stupid glossy plastic on the top which scratches by just collecting dust... they did the same thing with the Xbox One.

The best one is the 4gb Xbox 360s model, it has 4gb of fast internal flash memory and I found it really good for installing smaller games on it, they seem to load faster than the HDD. Then you obviously have the option to install the HDD and it has a matte finish so it doesn't scratch.

Thanks - and yeah, that's one that I've been looking at, available for about £60 boxed from CeX - or from £85 for a 250GB model, which I think that I might prefer on balance, for flexibility.

Why? The 360 has the massive back library, might as well wait until the Xbox One has a handful of worthwhile games.
