For those unaware - as I was unaware - the Xbox/360 HD-DVD drive is a USB device which can be connected to a PC running Windows XP/Vista and will work, although as I understand it you may need extra software/drivers/codecs on your PC to understand/decode data from DVDs and/or HD-DVDs.

eg Can't vouch for this posting/information but indicates the concept:

Vista should have native support, XP will download its own drivers from Microsoft when you plug the drive in.

thank you! cheapest i found is £40 or £30 for a second hand one!

excellent deal! voted hot

£29.99 bargain - hd dvds are cheap and class its worth it -- even if youdont aheva 360 you can still use it on your pc

With HD-DVDs do you notice the picture difference on non HD tv's? Or is it just normal picture

normal picture on a regular CRT TV

can this also play normal dvd's?

You can play normal DVDs in your 360 without this, but yes it will.

cheers for this
i reserved one at comet the other day but was to lazy to go get

just ordered one from play as a spare as they will be like gold dust in 6 months

Also included in the box is a official xbox360 remote control worth around £20 (well mine did from game costing £36.00)
so an absolute bargain
i have both the toshiba EP30-HDDVD player and the XBOX 360 one
(the toshiba one was from a post in HUKD from play.com the other month
with 7 hddvd titles for £69.99)
both will upscale standard dvds upto 1080p and the picture quality of hdvdvs are amazing on my philips ambilight 1080p tv it looks like you are looking out of the window
IMHO well worth the money
voted very hot indeed
people say hddvd is dead
yeah it lost the war to blu-ray
but my advise is get one of these(either the toshiba ep-30 or 360 hddvd)
and wait for the blu-ray to drop in price
people say hddvd is a waste of money
but spend £30 now and you wont be loosing £150 on you blu-ray player in the next year or so
well thats my theory anyway
hope it helps
regards

nice find:thumbsup:

Heat added, nice find.

I had one of these until I got my standalone, they're a brilliant PC ROM drive (and will play HD DVDs, DVDs & CDs)..
Windows will automatically detect the drive & request permission to go & find the necessary drivers when you install it, all you need after that is PowerDVD 7.3 Ultra
(which isn't hard to find).

Any decent recent PC (ie dual core onwards) can handle this - and even the cheap recent graphics cards all take the high def load off of the CPU anyways (from Nvidia 8500 onwards and ATi 2600 IIRC) .

Used as a PC ROM drive there is no limitation on the movie output
(non-HDMI XBox output was limited - by the agreements of the industry, not the limitation of the unit - to 1080i) and the audio output is whatever your PC can manage.

I found that used without an XBox 360 'base unit' the unit itself is pretty quiet.

If gold dust is dirt.

I honestly don't understand why people are buying these just to spend more money buying HD-DVDs that as someone else put it, will be worthless in a year. How many times can you watch a film?

The reason I bring this up is because the people who buy these are going to be the same people who in a year go, "Man, why did I buy this?" because all the latest films won't be available. Ah whatever, knock yourselves out.

Don`t think so

Anyone know if this could be used to boot a windows install on for an eee pc or is windows software required to get a pc to see it? Can't seem to find an answer. Anyone tried?

its improved over dvd but not high def

Remember the films been remastered so it will still beat an old dvd even on a normal tv

Yeh but how could i buy films in high def for £30 unless i got this

the only othr option is to buy a ps3 costing in excess of £200

Ive spent £200 on hd dvds and i think im set -- those films will last forever just because a format has died doesnt mean i have to rebuy everything

Same argument then you have made applies to Blu Ray, whats the point in buying any film if you only plan to watch it once?! Yes no future HD DVD titles are to be made, but the ones that are released are at a fraction of cost of Blu Ray and exactly the same quality.

Some of us want classic titles to watch in glorious HD...to me its a no brainer, I got one of these units from Comet last week, and am already buying a wealth of HD DVD titles I want....spend £150 on this unit and a wealth of titles or currently buy either a PS3 or a dedicated Blu Ray player that costs £250 or more...no thanks.

Sooner get some cheap HD DVD now, wait until Blu Ray players are at a decent price sub £100...and burners...then hey, transfer the film to Blu Ray, ripping can be done.

So yes, we will knock ourselves out thanks very much..with cheap titles...HD DVD is dead, long live the consumer

I can see what your saying but the problem comes when your hardware fails. What do you replace it with? If everyone stops producing HD-DVD players, you are going to be left with a lot of worthless disks. :?

As stated, nope, they can be transferred, heck even ripped to hard disk. Slysofts AnyDVD/Clone DVD supports this. Once Blu Ray burners come down in price, I am happy with future proofing....I can understand where you are coming from and thought about that before buying......

This Microsoft drive is perfect in that aspect, can be used on a PC for ripping, and with your Xbox 360 for playing, best of both worlds for £30...I am happy for one. The future of HD really is with downloaded format anyway, so in a way, ripping *is* future proofing my HD DVD investment! Blu Ray or HD DVD, future analysts reckon that downloadable media is the future, both formats will be dead!

Also HD DVD isnt exactly dead as a format yet machine production wise, Toshiba are releasing HD DVD recorders (at least at the moment in the Japanese market as of April)

Who mentioned Blu-Ray? I'm an Xbox 360 fanboy so I won't be into BD until MS give me a reason to be! What I'm trying to say is, HD Digital Downloads are the way forward. In the meantime, you can spend £30 on your player, £100 on up to 20 HD DVDs, but at the same time, I can have the same for.... £0. Long live the consumer

Please tell me where you can get HD Digital downloads of all the titles available on HD-DVD with all the added extras for free right now.

I know that this will play DVDs, but will it also play games? I'm thinking of getting one just to reduce the wear and tear on the 360's internal disc reader.
Cheers!
