Review

Xbox 360 ignites a new era of digital entertainment that is always connected, always personalized, and always in high definition. It is the only system designed with a singular platform vision that combines the most-powerful hardware with intelligent software and services.

Every Xbox 360 game is optimized for a minimum of 720p high definition output with anti-aliasing. Regardless of the TV Xbox 360 connects to, gamers will experience smooth, cinematic experiences that far exceed anything they've seen or felt in games before.

Xbox 360 also features software so smart it remembers what gamers have achieved. The Xbox Guide Button is the launch pad that connects gamers to their games, friends, and music from the wireless controller.

With more than one teraflop of system-floating point performance, a three-core PowerPC-based CPU for the most-advanced artificial intelligence and physics processing, a custom ATI graphics processor and more than 512 megabytes of memory for the ultimate in visual fidelity, the Xbox 360 hardware is a perfect blend of power, elegance, and balance. When combined with unrivaled XNA software development tools, game creators can produce truly believable, thriving worlds.

Good price. Are Premiums falcons? That'd be alright....

Good price heat added.

it states HDMI port, so from that you can date that they are at least Zephyrs, if not Falcons...chances are that they would be Falcons, would be very few Zephyrs left now in dusty boxes, if I remember correctly Zephyrs were being phased out around September 2007.

don't add heat......it'll RROD

i know falcons are meant to be quite reliable, are zephyrs? lets not mention jaspers here

Well lets put it this way, Zephyrs were the first redesign to try and combat the RROD, it had an improved GPU cooler, however was still 90nm both GPU and CPU. These days wouldn't consider going for anything less than a Falcon for reliability.

This is a handy time guideline of Xbox releases :

Thanks, rep added. I already have a falcon but my bro is after one now after coming into some serious money he won in a competition....lucky git! Will let him know about this, although he'll probably go for the 60gb premiums now as he couldnt believe how quiet my xbox is when playing off the harddrive...

Old console, not worth it

Dilemma! Should I go for this one for a Jaspar xbox 360 Arcade!

I had a falcon, it RROD'd, the thing to remember is you get a 3 year warranty for RROD, the repair turnaround is 1-2 weeks (usually), thats a great service for £130 (granted, would be better if none of them RROD'd but microsoft have handled it well by extending warranty).

Well if he can afford the extra £30-40 (if serious money won then it would be advisable!) then obviously the advantage is twofold, buying from a shop you could check lot numbers and ensure a Jasper, and also have a larger hard disk for installations.

These are still fairly good deals though, and I would pretty much bet they would be Falcons (chances of pre-august 2007 Zephyrs being stocked are slight) Cheers for the rep

There is the other route, CEX are selling 120GB drives for £55 and offer trade in prices of £23 for 20GB drives, so for £32 over the cost of him having one of these and selling the 20GB drive he could have a 120GB falcon!

muddyfox, how do you know its not a Falcon?

unless you a saying its not a Jasper, in which case to say its not worth it becasue its "old" is simply rubbish imo.

at the end of the day you get a warranty dont you, I have a Falcon and a Jasper and I cannot compare the difference in reliability as they both working fine(prays it stays that way) but if you are thinking youll get a quiter console in a Jasper then think again, they still hum a bit..

Processor wise and power consumption wise the Jasper is the unit to go for as far as reliabilty goes at least on paper......both 65nm GPU and CPU.

You are totally right on quietness...the 360 is never going to be a quiet machine, that has not changed from the Xenon through to the latest Jasper, some are quieter than others, its all down to two factors :

Noise of the DVD drive, this can obviously be reduced vastly by HD game installs at least MS have addressed this area!

Noise of the twin rear fans in the unit, different brands used can vary results of noise output, but even idling at the XBL desktop some of these can sound annoying.

If any future redesign of the 360 is necessary, I feel its down to those retched rear fans, Microsoft need to use better quality low noise ones.

I still have a Xenon :O

And there is no reason why you shouldn't! Handled properly, given correct ventilation, there is no reason why the Xenon can't perform the same as any of the others (albeit hotter, more power consumption and without HDMI output, you can still get a great picture from Component or VGA)

Me too!
Only problem I have had with it is a slipping drive belt, fixed in minutes after cleaning.

I had one too, and no regrets, HOWEVER no matter how well you look after them, most will die, and you are lucky to have got this far without a failure if you use it a lot.

its down partly to heat (which is mostly fixed now with much lower power parts)

party to the lead free solder (no chance of fixing this)
partly due to a low quality thin pcb which bends a fair bit

and combining all the above with the rubbish XCLAMP which stresses the hell out of the motherboard.

the problem is vastly reduced on the falcons, less heat, less mobo warping, and presumably even more so on the jaspers.
But that XClamp needs to be replaced or a thicker stronger better quality PCB used on the motherboard. until one of these happens the rrod will never go completely

PS VGA looks better on my telly than HDMI so i keep with that even on my new Falcon arcade

Saying that, this is my second one! First one went back due to a graphics card problem but it didn't red ring, only froze time to time.
Managed to get Game to exchange it tho so was well pleased.

I bought my first 360 in May 07 had a Xenon, but took the foresight to firstly take it back to Gamestation to exchange it for a Zephyr and then later on for a Falcon under warranty..glad I did but handled with kid gloves I know there are people out there happily still using Xenons but obviously as you state the risks are much higher (and hence why I swapped my units under warranty!)

I had an early xbox model (no HDD , no HDMI port , wired controllers arcade i think) - but that broke on me. Good thing I didn't get a live subscription. I have a ps3 now as well as a wii. But being quite a gamer I wouldn't mind getting another xbox and the new halo RTS game interests me. Although I thought halo3 was **** compared to 1 and 2.

I dont really understand these Xenon, jasper , falcon. I understand they are the different models of the xbox but I dont really want a lucky dip. It may be this or it may be that. WTF - you would think after the effort MS put into fixing people consoles that they would make a major fanfare about this new improved model.

So basically , please can someone tell me 100% if this is the newest Red ring fixed console??
It will be in a cupboard under the stairs with a lot of other AV kit , basically not that well ventilated although not an oven either. No other electrical stuff I have has problems. Apart from some extream conditions, I should be able to put it where I like this is the 21C not 1970.

100% This will not be the latest model (Jasper)

Banned

The 3 year warranty is from the date on the back of the console. If this is a 2007 version when the HDMI port was first put in then it only has upto 2010. When you ring Microsoft helpline they check your date and go according to that.

95% chance it will be a Falcon, which is a good model.

it CAN still rrod but then so can the Jasper i presume, but its a lot less likely than your launch console.

it wont be the newest console i am afraid, and there is a very small chance it will be the model before the Falcon, which is better than the launch unit in terms of better internal cooling, but still a bit ropey.

thanks courtster

What drives do you think are likely to be in these?

they all have HDMI and you can get a 20GB HDD from MS with 3 months XBLive for £20.. since you can get Arcades for under £100 afaik, this isn't a great deal..

Wheres that I'd love to know:thumbsup:

sorry to sound like a complete noob but how do you play from the hard drive?

on the game in the dashboard, click the yellow button and then an option screen opens - install to HDD

hotukdeals.com/ite…th/

possibly expired though, can anyone confirm? I used it at Xmas, worked fine.

ok there may be other ways to get a cheap hard drive, .e.g.
dealextreme.com/det…139
(not currently in stock though!)
anyone know other sources?

just remember all Xbox360 consoles are the same (well, no, but the difference is Falcon/Jasper etc not Arcade/Pro etc) just a different colour tray..

20gb is not a lot if you want to install games to the hardrive (you'd probably only get 3-5 games on it?)

I had a RROD last year, from an original 360 that I bought in Feb 2006 and they sent me a new replacement xbox - was wondering - would this new one be one of the new improved ones? Or a refurbed old one?

Does that make sense? :?

This is the same price as the Arcade model.
So you get a free hard drive, free component cable, free headset
You miss out on , memory unit, free arcade games.

I would buy the 120GB BEVS drive and flash it into this unit and you've got an elite for £169
Providing if this RRODs, you can send the Xbox back for repair with no hard drive attached.

what referral information?
wow i copied it from the hotukdeals thread, someone else sneaked that in! not me sorry.

@rayman, look, its in the origin thread, i didnt even know what a referral link looked like:
hotukdeals.com/ite…ic/

plus you get the headset with this deal.. its ok then (unless you prefer your own headset, then get an adapter for about £6)

&above, its not really the same price as the Arcade, since there are Arcade deals with games (actual games, not the free ones) for this price.
so yeah its whether you prefer hardware or software i guess..
