Q1.Can I use my old xbox 360 HDD in this?
A1. Yes - click here for further information.

Q2. Can I use a standard 2.5" HDD in this?
A2. Yes - Click here for more information or refer to Windhoek's post here.

Q3.What's the largest 2.5" HDD I can get to work with this?
A3. Currently 250GB I believe.

Q4. Can I just use an external hard drive via USB (for game saves etc.)?
A4. Yes you can! There are requirements that have to be met, Windhoek's post here explains it perfectly.

Q5. Does this come with a matte or gloss finish?
A5. The 4GB slim comes with a matte finish whilst the 250GB slim comes with a gloss finish.

Thanks to Windhoek's input with answering some of these questions!

Yep you do get a controller and the essential cables etc. You don't get a HDMI cable included with the xbox but of course that's free with this deal

I don't think you get a headset like you do in the 250gb slim.

Also, I think the 4gb is matte finish not gloss but I'm not 100% sure on that. That could be a bonus in many people's eyes, you can simply upgrade the hard drive at a later date and I know many don't like the fingerprints etc. that come with a gloss finish.

yeh that's right, no headset and matte black finish (which I prefer), great deal if you missed out on the Sainsburys deal, if you sell all 3 games at cex, brand new xbox with hdmi cable works out £109. Bargain!

Great deal.

Hi do you know if the original 360 fat hard drive works ok with the 360 slim?

Thanks

You can add this £29.99 250GB Western Digital HD using this guide.

I've used it for over a month now and it's worked 100%. I've also been on XBL lots of times and have had no problems whatsoever.

Below are some pics of the HD in my Xbox Slim.

1) Tape on the front of the HD

3) HD in Xbox HD slot

4) Foam for stability

5) Foam around HD in the HD slot

P.s. I attached tape to the HD for a controlled drop (+removal) of the HD as the HD slot is too narrow for fingers to guide it all the way in.

P.s.s. Although the foam's depth is only about 5mm and it only holds the HD in place at the edge, it's a solid fit as I wedged it in. I also left a corner of the foam sticking out a bit to make sure I can grip it when I need to take it out.

When Microsoft come out with the official HDD upgrade for the slim, what will the difference be between theres and a home made one?

The MS HD will presumably come in a case and cost a lot more than £29.99!

I prefer the matte finish to the shiny just waiting for the likes of deal extreme to sell a hard drive enclosure designed for the slim

Nice DIY solution.

Surely some enterprising Chinese firm should have come up with a more professional solution by now, though?

Good deal for the folk who don't have a Sainsbury's nearby.

Remember you can use any usb memory stick or hdd to add a further 32gb via a usb port on these with no need to mess around.

Might upgrade from my Falcon Elite to this, not sure how much i'd get for my Elite without HDD though.

Place that sells the Slim Hard Drive case:-

goldenbridge.hk/goo…tml

So if a suitable enclosure did come out for the Slim 4GB would I be able to whack a great big 1.5TB 2.5" drive in or does the xbox have a limit to how much memory it can have?

The current limit is 250GB.

this looks good

great offer! that's one xmas present sorted!

Thanks, heat added. Have finally bitten the bullet and bought the 4gb version. Time will tell if I've made right decision...... Cheers

Would it be possible to connect a WD 1TB external hard drive via usb port to this?
Also would the old xbox 360 controller work with this?
Edited by: "hereafter" 18th Oct 2010

Don't you have to format the hard drive in a special way so it works in the 360 ?

I don't think you can just buy that WD hard drive and stick it in without doing some special formatting or cloning.

Whats the easiest way to transfer game saves from a 20gb Premium to one of these then?

no the largest amount of space that a 360 can use atm can be 250gb, yes old 360 controllers will work with this

yeah you do have to format the hdd in a particular way, otherwise the 360 doesn't detect it.

depends on how much data you have on your 20gb hdd, remember the above is only 4gb, I would recommend using a 16gb USB flash drive, stick it in your old 360 format using the 360, transfer your data from your 20gb hdd to the flash drive and stick the flash drive in the 4gb slim, and leave it there

My Lad wants an XBOX for Christmas, and I know nothing about them, would this one be OK, or should I be buying the 250gb one? He wanted to buy a "Chipped " one from a friend, but I am a bit wary about that. Plus, will he want to chip this one, or does that just blow them up.

If you only need 4gb, I may go for this one, Any help greatly appreciated!

Thanks

If the Xbox is chipped it will likely get detected when he goes on the Xbox live and get banned from Xbox live, so he will be able to use the Xbox but it will not have the online capabilities, not sure whether the M$ are scanning for chipped xbox's constantly or just doing a mass ban every now and then. Look it up, I think something like 950k users have been banned from Xbox live earlier this year for having modified their consoles, modification is forbidden and voids the warranty if Xbox has been opened.

I would personally advise you to purchase the 250GB version as it has no hassle and is extremely easy to set up, you will end up purchasing a hard drive later on anyway seeing as 4GB is nowhere enough for a hardcore gamer.

P.S For game saves 4GB is sufficient enough but if your son intends to install games on his Xbox then I don't think 4GB will be enough for any of the newly released games - installation allows faster loading and smoother performance overall as the hard drive does not have to spin the disk constantly to obtain data.

Best to get a new one, to be safe. Never buy a used Xbox, you don't know how reliable they are (Some have a widespread Hardware issue)

I would buy the 250GB if I were you. 4GB is not enough, and unless you know how to put your own HDD in the 4GB, you should go for the 250GB. It's about £189, but you get a lot more space, and it will be easier to set up and much more reliable.

Also, if you chip it, it could get banned quite easily. Unless you are up for buying a new xbox once every four months, just do it honestly. Don't let him chip it. You are paying for it, it's your Xbox, not his. Tell him he can chip it, but if it gets banned, HE has to pay for a new one.

But if you don't play online, sure go ahead chip it, It won't get banned cause it can't...

This. Almost bought a 4GB one but went with 250gb slim in the end and so glad I did, once I downloaded a couple of demos, free dlc content for fable 2 and bonus maps for forza3 that took up 3.5gb all ready!

I took advantage of CEX paying £30 cash for copies of Fifa 11 to get my total price down to £211 and that got me: 360S 250GB HD, Headset, Forza 3, Gears of War 2, Fable 2, Project Gotham Racing 4 and an extra controller.

Great work JasonAJB & windhoek, well laid out & a nice single reference for all those questions that keep popping up.
Thumbs up guys.

I see Microsoft is adding more IPTV stuff to Xbox 360.
For standard definition TV I think the 250gb drive is more than enough (the SD Sky boxes had a 40gb and then an 80gb hard drive - with another 80gbs reserved for their anytime stuff) but when you start adding HD TV stuff it's going to go through that 250gbs so fast.
For music, pics and films the ability to use any sized hard drive via USB is great but I think more is needed for the internal hard drive for IPTV in HD.
So I expect we're going to be getting the chance to fit another bigger sized hard drive soon.
At least 500gbs and maybe as much as 1tb (which would fit those rumours that were going around a few months back).

The guide I used (linked below) is stunningly simple, yet extremely comprehensive: it's one of the best end user mod guides I've ever seen. The only thing it doesn't mention is that you need a programme like WinRAR to open a RAR file.

Nice guide but I have a laptop so getting the sata connection is a no go for me. Would have to source a family or friends. Not too keen on messing with their stuff though.

Would there be any difference with a 7200rpm drive over a 5400rpm one or is the Xbox hard coded to only go as fast as the 5400rpm drive.

Hi.

Is this the new xbox 360 (quiet fan, wifi built in) or is it the older one?

Thanks.

Excellent thanks
