Can someone please help with a bit of info on how this works. Does my son have to have the games or can he buy them through live marketplace? Do you also pay for new game content? If yes can anyone give me some idea of cost? He has just bought Grand Theft Auto V so what would he be able to do with that if I buy this gold card? Thanks from a non gaming mum.

I'll have a stab at some of these questions - this xbox live card just gets your son online for 12 months, so that he can then play the online/multiplayer content within certain games, such as GTA V, Call of Duty games, Battlefield 4 etc. Broadly speaking, depending on the game, this allows him to compete against other people who are on-line.
Buying/downloading games through the marketplace is additional/extra cost, depending on the game etc.
Again, depending on the game, any in-game purchases such as new map-packs etc are all at extra cost.

Thanks OP, got a couple in a shop. I was given a choice of 1) 360 version which includes 12 months live or 2) Xbox one version which has 12 months and game download. Both were same price.
