It's not a given they will, they're just rumours. No point spending your life waiting for the next thing, because you'll be forever waiting with how quickly new technology comes out.

But that next thing is days away... It's definitely worth waiting!

Rumours are Microsoft will announce a smaller slimmer and cheaper Xbox One with 1-2tb storage as standard, at E3 2016 (June 14th). As it's just one week I would definitely hold off buying a console right now because there's a chance these old models could be hugely reduced in price OR you could potentially get a better (updated) system for the same price if not cheaper.
Announcing plans to produce a new console is one thing, settingng a release date is another. You could be waiting 12 to 18 months.

Orrrr they could release it immediately like they did with the new version of the Xbox 360.
It's worth waiting a few days to find out.
This time next week, this console will not be so elite. If you are thinking of buying a new PS4 or Xbox one..... wait until E3 2016 which is next week. more powerful models are being announced. Both consoles expected to be released before Christmas this year and Nintendo NX hybrid console you can take anywhere will come out March 2017.

That's certainly the case with the PS4. They need to bring out the more powerful version for VR to be decent on it.

Not so sure with the XBOX though. MS only really have Hololens in the pipeline but I'm not sure how much that's dependent on the driver device as it contains more of it's own processing power onboard from what I know of it. But I guess they may want to keep pace with the PS4 anyway as the updated version of that will give it considerably more GFX grunt, and thus prettier games, if you are staying in 2D land ....

No, Xbox are in talks to partner with Oculus, which will definitely require more powerful hardware.
Yeah there are rumours of an Oculus partnership (hype!) so it's probably safest just to wait and see
Those who want to wait will have to wait a really long time. Rumors of a new version has been doing rounds for more than 8 months now but there is none to be seen.
If you want it get it. This is the best price for a Elite since launch that i can remember :-)
the rumours are that it will be more powerful to support VR and 4k more than anything else.
If you only have a 1080p tv and couldn't care less about VR, i'd say get this.
There's no way the XboxOne console is at its end already. Not a chance in hell. Same for PS4.
I'd say the new consoles upgrades will be nice to haves if you can utilize them, but not essential.

You're right about the need for more grunt to do VR. (and 4k)

And yeah, for the PS4, it needs it (due to imminent VR). But I'm sure I read somewhere that from later this year, PS4 games are supposed to contain two versions? One for the original hardware, and an "optimized" version for the newer hardware. Which applies to 2D stuff as well as VR. Apparently.

But yeah, anything for XBOX is much more rumour-ware at the moment. The PS4 VR stuff is pretty much confirmed. So worth holding off.

But with the XBOX? Much less so. So this one may well be worth a punt ...

Which will takes ages. Which is a good thing. As by then Oculus might be a complete system.

At the moment, it's not. I sold mine and jumped ship to Vive (as have others I know). Once Oculus gives you more than seated, control pad, driven games, I may re-visit.
You are all gonna be gutted in a weeks time lol

Sure people could just sell the console. They probably wouldn't lose much/anything if they offloaded it soon after E3, considering how much the controller is worth.
