X1 and PS4 sales have dropped 35% since the announcement of the Series X and PS5, so I imagine there will be a lot of deals popping up!
Games open BOXES are the worst. Save yourself the hassle and buy a new one for 40 quid more.

Yep these will be boxes damaged in warehouse or transit or returns because of damage. Unless desperate I'd wait til Easter offers.

Or the software update issue...
Be aware. I've bought 3 steam controllers once as new and one was definitely used. They didn't even bother to clean a fingerprints, as well email me back about my complaint.

Or BF...

Shwing!
Who's going around opening boxes ?
So I am a little confused, these aren't new then?

Has anyone got any experience with buying "new with open box", does that mean the console *could* potentially be damaged as I am guessing these have either been dropped to damage the packaging, or have been opened and then returned for who knows what reason? Faulty potentially?

Depends on what each seller means by open box. It could be that the packaging is damaged and/or some contents are not sealed like the power packs aren't wrapped or the console itself isn't wrapped in protective wrap and/or has possibly been used. There may be some cables which have not been wrapped up correctly or games, which are included in bundles, have been opened or the seal is broken but the game wrapping is entact. Either way they cannot sell these as new but it comes with a full warranty - hence the discounts. If you aren't bothered about it being a possible return, or they may have damaged the outside packaging in the warehouse, then it's cool. You may receive one which is fully boxed and everything sealed inside but the outside packaging is damaged which could have been in transit straight from their supplier but only identified at a later date so the effort to return outweighs the option to sell at a discounted rate or their supplier agrees to discount on damaged items so they don't get them back.
For piece of mind purchase a brand new one for about £40 more. It will also help if you want to sell the console or contents in the future if they don't have any damaged packaging, some people won't buy if the packaging is rough as they feel the console has been abused and shy away. Each to their own.

I guess in short then, by them saying it is “new open box”, is the bare minimum requirement to allow them to sell as “new open box” that the console itself has NEVER been used and that the console itself is not damaged in any way?

Can they guarantee that?

"console itself has NEVER been used" - No that is not a guarantee as some customers may return an item and used it for a few days then changed their mind, but you could have the controllers all sealed and never used (owners of more than 1 xbox one) so the console isn't sealed but you would probably never know unless you boot it up and see if they've been reset.

"and that the console itself is not damaged in any way" - If they are selling as new open box then there shouldn't be any visible damage at all otherwise it isn't new open box, it's a refurb or used.

"Can they guarantee that" - Nope and if they did they would be lying. Put it another way, Argos have clearance warehouses which are open to the public and traders. You can buy pallet loads of items which have been returned by customers but the packaging is not in top condition or the seals and packaging have been opened. The items have not been used (supposedly) but they are still sold as new open box so you get a full warranty with it. Now on the other hand they don't test all of these products that are returned and some end up at Milton Keynes market sold as seen. Majority will work with no issues but others will be faulty, that is the risk taken buying new open boxed. At least if you bought from the Argos clearance warehouse you have the warranty with Argos (just the same as you purchased at full retail mint sealed condition from an Argos store). Whereas buying from a market trader you run the risk of them washing their hands off you. Buying an xbox from Game you have the full warranty in place and Game will honour that. If you want brand spanking new sealed smelling like a freshly printed book then purchase brand new.

It's the same with buying a new open box TV from Currys. They may say it is brand new but you won't know if it's been in someone's house for a week and they changed their mind but it still comes with everything (if it doesn't they need to specify this) and a full warranty. You can never have a 100% guarantee it has never been used, even if you plug in a new TV or an Xbox console and before you perform any updates you turn it off and change your mind it's still "used" and therefore 2nd hand.
