    Thanks... heat from me
Nice - was considering a second Shield but this is more tempting.
x265 support is ideal, but lack of RJ45 is off-putting - anyone know of similar alternatives that offer a network port?

    Voted hot btw

Good box but 4k over WiFi could be a bit jerky
Very good one, only downside is the lack of BBC iplayer and Amazon video apps. Otherwise it's a great little box

Use a usb Ethernet adapter. Here

You're right just shame Mi Box USB2.0 only, could be used with this one to get 1Gbit Ethernet
I've got the original mi box. It's a great, great idea, and works brilliantly most of the time.... but has terrible / non-existent support despite being endorsed by google.

It hasn't had an update at all and xiaomi seem to have one person working on it....while sony android tv / nvidia have had many updates.

The launcher is also awfull due to xiaomi insisting on putting on their own skin/recommendations. You can make limited alterations to the box, but if you start installing beta updates to make significant alterations, you end up breaking some apps.

Amazon instant video is also a bit of a pain to put on as you have to use the sony tv version.

I'm still holding out for an update to sort out the current issues, but if you're not after much more than a roku/ fire tv 4k offer, i would go with them due to the support they receive.

Is this definitely better than a cheapie S905X box? If so, why? Cheers
I have one of these and like it most of the time. I use it primarily for playing mkv files using Kodi from a HD and unfortunately Kodi does crash more often than I would like.

The listing on Amazon states that this ethernet adapter doesn't work with Android - have you or anyone else used it successfully with this box or can recommend one that does work? Thanks

I'd recommend you give Arcsoft Video Player a try for MKV playback on Android TV - I use it on my Shield, it's free and works really nice. I do use Kodi - have done for years - but it is prone to crashes.

would a USB to Ethernet work on a android tv ?
Iv read loads of good stuff about Xiaomi products but does this has any benefit over the fire tv 4k?
How do people find Geekbuying? I'm not sure I would use them again, rather pay a bit more at gearbest. have just been unfortunate?

You click the link and the price comes up in dollars, if that doesn't make it pretty clear you are importing it then sadly quite a lot is going to catch you out on the internet. We live in an international market and this site is about savings on products available to people in the UK. As the heat for many of these deals shows, people are happy to take the risks for the savings involved.

I do the same with mine, though I use the fork of Kodi for Android called SPMC, it gets used most days and very rare to crash on a range of h264 and h265 mkvs up to around 10GB/hr file quality (which the WiFi also handles fine).

Best android box I have used other than a Shield. Bit gutted that the updates have been slow and that so many Apps are exclusive to Shield and Sony versions of Android TV, but it is a really good and stable box for Kodi/SPMC.
A buggy , badly supported box. If your happy to side load some apps (no iplayer wihout an air mouse currently) and leave it at 1080 its fine though especially at this price

The apps are in the most part not exclusive as such its just Nvidia and Sony pay for the development themselves, you can side load them (ish) but an Air mouse is needed for alot of the UK TV apps.

The funny thing is if he dropped the buy British/anti-Chinese nonsense he'd find himself saving a lot of money.

I really don't see how he can rationally rail against bargains just because they are imported. The whole ethos of the site is saving money, so it just sits badly.

You get the feeling if he just tried to pick up one of the bargains he rails against he'd change his opinion. I won't hold my breath though.
    Good:
Excellent video type support and has DTS audio license.
Wifi seemed good to me though some other say not.

    Bad:
    Poor software update support.
    Only one USB port.
    Only 8GB storage.
    No ethernet port.

These boxes aren't the usual cheap imports. They are endorsed by Goggle and are a quality product with codec licensing unlike a lot of the imports.

You can sideload the standard Android versions (hence the need for a mouse), but it is a bit harder to get the Android TV ones. I know the Amazon Video one from Sony was about as I was using that on my Shield till they got an official one. Have had no joy finding the iPlayer one. ITV are the only ones with an official Android TV version in the app store, shame the content is bobbins.
No Ethernet? madness but then again would not be gigabit Ethernet, one USB very disappointing.

    I'd add

That Android TV is designed for a TV, as are the official apps,
More stable software and good quality hardware (not just the chip) compared to the cheap boxes,
Though the updates have been slow (a couple after release then mothing) Oreo is probably coming (the cheap ones get zero updates in my experience) xda-developers.com/and…ox/
Good quality remote with voice searching and Bluetooth connection

    Downsides

No sd slot and only 1 USB
WiFi only or buy a dongle (which then probably means you need a USB hub)
8GB is a stingy storage allowance, esspecialy when the upgrade options are limited
Range of apps you can install directly is limited to those designed specifically for Android TV, it's a pretty short list
Sideloading other apps means most will run, but the process is more faff.

Personally I find this is great as a box for my bedroom, hidden in a cupboard and just working. I got a Shield for the lounge to have the full range of apps and features. My cheap 905 boxes got given away as they were not as stable or nice to use.
Better off with the fire tv box try CEX,just add the Android TV apk to get rid of all the ads.

    But I never use chromecast...
Personally I have zero problems with my 25 quid Nexbox. It plays h265 1080p. mkv files OK through Kodi. It's better than my Minix (2 or 3 years old) in the bedroom that usually can't handle h265 files...

Just informing the membership to be cautious and do their research as posters rarely ,if ever , state these products are grey imports from China with no warranty .

Is that a problem for you ? or are you one of the many incentivised members (dear HUKD member.....etc etc !!! ) paid to vote Chinese deals hot and leave positive comments ? .

If that is not the case what is the problem with my clarifying the nature and country of origin of the seller and warning members to do their research before buying ?

Thanks for following my comments , but why not mention the many helpful comments I make on Financial products , insurance , switching etc ? I presume its because you don't get paid to criticise those comments ?

Also strange, given that it all comes from China. Buying the same/similar product of amazon makes people feel better and offers a little protection. It's a good bargain, get stuck in and stop worrying people. Bought 4 phones, 1 tablet pc and various other low value tech from China over the last few years and never a problem unless saving money is a problem for you. Could always buy an apple tv, at least you will get a round of applause in the shop as you leave.

Of course not, but that is not the tone or purpose of your posts... Pretty much always total negativity and repeatedly calling for these merchants to be banned from HUKD.

Providing information and advice, that's fair and I'd welcome that. Constant whingeing and negativity not so much...

would a USB to Ethernet work on a android tv ?

No reason why it shouldn't. I used a usb to ethernet adapter for my original mi box and a pair of mk808 android boxes without issue. You can also use a usb hub to allow more connections
