Hi can you recommend any POE cameras to look out for?

Axis or Mobotix if you can afford them. But since this is a Chinese camera thread...Hikvision or Dahua.

It's best to pay a little more and buy Hik/Dahua from the UK as there can be differences in firmware - Have a look on ebay. They cost more than £15 but you can do a lot more with them and if you look at the price of something like Axis, you'll realise they're actually a really good price.

What you want is something which uses widely available (and preferably open) standards and protocols, eg ONVIF/RTSP, that way you can connect them up to a range of recording systems, stream it via VLC and other software without the requirement for proprietary and dodgy software, phone apps etc. You also want something which isn't "cloud" (read - "someone else's computer") based or where those features are optional....do you really want to store your CCTV footage on someone else's server? You can port forward to access things remotely, if you want off-site recordings during motion detection, these slightly more expensive cameras have the ability to upload via FTP - get yourself a cheap Linux (or even Windows) VPS, configure FTP and point the cameras at them - yes that's still someone else's server but you can encrypt the storage if you want to, you can also have a hosting provider of your choice and not a Chinese server.

If you don't want Chinese, maybe have a look at Ubiquiti. I've never used them but their wifi stuff is good so it's worth looking into.

If you go for an NVR, those often have POE built in. Otherwise use injectors or get a switch, cameras are usually 100mbit so gig switches aren't essential but if you'll be plugging other stuff into the switch, it could be a good idea.

ZoneMinder is free software for recording and should work with any Hikvision or you can just have the cameras record directly to a NAS via NFS/SMB - they handle motion detection themselves and even email alerting

Where does everyone get their GearBest codes from?

Tempted but I'll wait until I get feedback on how it actually is.

Careful though, the reviews warn against updating the app, seems to bork the camera, need to stick with the current app version/downgrade again.
Hope they don't update the firmware and kill the camera for those of us outside China, again.

I updated the firmware fine on set up and it's been ok. This is a new camera. I think the older style had firmware issues but don't quote me.

Nice - ordered

So - what do I need to watch out for when registering / setting this up? Seems people mentioning some issues?
I have Yeelights and they work great, so imagine this to be good too!

Great little camera. Had it for a few weeks. View and move from anywhere via your phone. Great IR and can link it to SD card or external memory source. I'd recommend for the price albeit a little faff on set u

Thanks OP. Ordered. Had an eye on this for a while. My house is slowly getting Xiaomi smart!

Looks good, ordered, thanks

Is there way to scan camera for spyware, virus , hacking etc ?

What about the software update comment above?

Thats what I love about the yeelights. So easy to set up and they just work.

Can this thing be used to save footage on a server in the house?

yeah....interesting......does this use the same app as the smart ants camera?

To be clear, I just read through the reviews on gearbest... the camera works, but when people updated the app, they couldn't get a connection until they downgraded the app again. then all was fine again.
I think the camera look good, I've been watching the price, but been hesitant because of the previous xiaomi camera which had its firmware changed and stopped working outside of china.

well if they have don't it once...makes me wary.

Mine arrived yesterday and I've spent hours trying to get it to work. It wanted me to update the firmware during the setup so I did (not sure if that''s the problem) but it just doesn't connect to the app even when the app sees it and says it's online. The fact I don't understand the Chinese voice commands doesn't help but I've managed to get other Xiaomi cameras working so I'm pretty sure I've done everything correctly.

Imagine some one seeing you hidden cam and saying " Whats dafang over there" and you reply with it is.

Hi,
I have been having the same problem. The app cannot connect with the camera. Have you mmanaged to find a solution?

mine works fine on the Ipad, but cannot get it to work properly on my android phone.. bought it as a baby cam, so to be honest, i will just use the ipad. I might try uninstalling and reinstalling the app on the s7 to see if it is because i updated the software. picture quality is fantastic (compared to other cheap cameras). night vision seems pretty good too..

Oops, sorry...

does this have onvif support?

£15.28 at the moment plus £0.76 topcashback

WiFi....so probably vulnerable to Krack and will never be updated. Could also be de-authed to kick it off the network and therefore stop you from recording video, it's very easy to denial of service attack wifi.

WiFi cameras are pointless in most circumstances as you still have to power them. The WiFi also just adds another attack vector which can be exploited by people who don't have physical access to the camera or even to the building.

Just get a camera with an Ethernet connection and power it with POE, that way you can run a data cable 100m away from a plug socket and don't need to wire in any new mains to do it.

https://github.com/samtap/fang-hacks/issues/234the hacking has started it …https://github.com/samtap/fang-hacks/issues/234the hacking has started it seems ...

Closed source and never updated Android apps. Android seems to have become a way of selling a product that is dependant on the app store and not download able anywhere else.... It's waiting for a whole slew of new apps which are updated but you have to pay for or lose the hardware functionality.

These are really shit. Not meant to he used outside of china and have restrictions for anyone who tries.

Just got mine from a pre sale and I am having a lot of trouble connecting it to an android phone.(and I have managed to connect a restricted Yi in the past). It has been reported that some connected successfully by selecting mainland China as locale and the installing the app from play store (not the later version from Xiaomi). Any further tips welcomed.
