4K Chromecast + Android TV for under the price of a Chromecast ultra

"Was ready to go ahead and buy this but the £9.99 delivery fee (more insured) makes it somewhat less of a bargain. Instead I ordered it on eBay and with the code PRISTINE it came down to about fifty quid. Not the most powerful box but the sound processing and Chromecast sound promising and I'm hoping the Android TV os will make it more usable for the other people in my house.

this is a decent box I have this and a nvidia shield. it has 2gb ram which seems low but i find it perfectly usable although slower than my shield tv but nothing comes close to that. It is a google tv approved device so it has full support for netflix in 4k which loads of the boxes with dodgy roms dont have like not using android tv. On paper some of those other boxes seem good based on specs but its not as simple as that. The mi box also has a 4k chromecast built in which are normally a similar price by themselves. Some apps you will have to sideload like prime video since it only appears on boxes that have an agreement with amazon like the shield tv

Sd slot/usbs. But having to sud load apps suck. It it had a real playstore it be amazing but it doesn't

Could you not install an alternative app store such as apptoide?

HDR? Dolby Atmos?
I've always wondered with these is it actually Android TV or a custom ROM based off a tablet OS like many others?

This is an Android TV, otherwise it won't have Netflix.
This or Fire TV 4K? How's the Wifi on this?
In the same boat.trying too decide between this or the fire stick...
4k firestick is decent. I have one, they are pretty quick but only 2gb ram/8gb storage (same as this xiaomi box)

personally ive been recommended the H96 Pro Max box a few times. Which is 4GB/64GB Storage. Which blows the xiaomi and 4k firestick out of the park

They are all around the same price too. I'd be going for the H96 pro max if i needed a new box i think

This.

The mi box s has a s905, for this price you can get a s905x2 box with ethernet, which will also pass over the correct HDR information (hdr on these boxes is very poor as it doesn't give the TV the correct max CLL/FALL metadata.

If you're just using it for kodi, then get a s905x2 box & flash it with corelec, or even better, get an Odroid N2.

Yes via es file explorer. Stremio is not not working so well. Mobdro is fine
I'll avoid all these streaming devices and buy Roku. That's the only platform every streaming service provider supports. Recently installed apple tv app and now I have every streaming app I use in one place.
Any idea how to get NBA 4K on this one or streaming games live without pop adverts?

Decent box but only 480p Netflix and the lack of UK apps or if they do it is a real pain to get them to work with orientation apps and using a mouse with them makes this a no go.

IMO it's the Roku for official apps. If you want other apps it's the 4K stick (it has all UK TV apps), then Chinese boxes in very last place.

All the main apps work via Chromecast these days, which is included with this Mi Box. NowTV, ITV, BBCi etc.

There are apps for a few but it is a woefully small list compared to even a basic smart TV.

Android TV is easily the best TV OS I've used, hopefully more support to come. My TV, with a standard Bluetooth controller, can play megadrive games.

I know but then at that point if your casting everything why not just get a chromecast instead? Give me proper apps and a remote to control them anytime. I will agree the android TV OS is a good OS but the lack of UK apps really make it hard to recommend for everyone.

I was also referring to the H96 Pro - a Chinese box running the android phone OS with 480p netflix, basically one to avoid!
this looks to be closer to a shield than a firestick.

Cause you do have some apps, you can Chromecast and you can do much more plus potentially more apps later AND it's cheaper than a UHD Chromecast. If ultra casting is what you want, this is the thing to get.

Look on you tube there are lots of US vloggers showing how to install the best sports apk's for US sports.
Was ready to go ahead and buy this but the £9.99 delivery fee (more insured) makes it somewhat less of a bargain. Instead I ordered it on eBay and with the code PRISTINE it came down to about fifty quid. Not the most powerful box but the sound processing and Chromecast sound promising and I'm hoping the Android TV os will make it more usable for the other people in my house.

All about future updates, got burned with generic android box years back, never got updates
does this come with a uk plug or a travel adapter like most other sellers?

The one I ordered from eBay came with an adapter which is fine but I'll probably get a proper plug eventually. The box only arrived yesterday. Still finding my way with Android TV os but the box itself seems very responsive for the price/specs. Ethernet and an extra USB (3.0 preferably) port would have been nice but I'm delighted so far. The Google assistant integration is fantastic and I'm sure there's a great many more ways of making it useful I'm yet to discover.

do you know what kind of power connection plug it takes? name or pic of the plug end might help identify it. I'm guessing its universal type.

so i can find one with a uk 3 pin on other end on amazon or ebay.

Consumer rights mean the seller is liable for the device until delivery, I wouldn't ever pay more for insured delivery from EU that eglobal do.

Bought a Roku once, apparently it didn't like Virgin media's hub. Virgin couldn't fix it, Roku couldn't fix it - will never buy their products again.

Not sure if you can get Kodi / TeaTV / Showbox etc on Roku - maybe you can. If not then these android boxes are the way to go.

Edit - I believe the issue was related to an enforced proxy that I couldn't change.

Works fine with Virgin hub here. Most likely V hub issue. If you select 5ghz wifi band you router need to work within 36-48 channels.
