hell no - this is the poor mans nvidia shield

"Hey baby, come back to my place and let me show you my lavish lifestyle Aww yeah baby! that's right, I have an Nvidia shield" and then all of her clothes fell off.
The packaging for this seems so familiar, can’t put my finger on it..

Is this better in any way than Fire Stick 4k?

I would say yes simply because of horrible and disorganised UI of Amazon's FireOS! Don't forget Xiaomi has Chromecast built in too.

I have a Shield TV 2015 and so useful to free up a HDMI by having it integrated into a box.

Will this play MKV files from USB? I'm increasingly finding my 5yo Samsung smart TV won't play downloaded files, presumably due to newer codecs.

Probably as you could put MXPlayer or similar on it.

Just one thing, check the number of USBs and you might find you'd need a powered hub if u want peripherals connected.

Probably not tbh, if it had ethernet then I would have said yes, but the Firestick is probably just as good as this.

These are decent for the price if you want the Android TV UI but other than that 4KFS are good, else just go all out and buy an NVIDIA Shield.

Random question I would love one of these boxes but also need a box that’s has tv with record and catch up on. Can anyone suggest anything?
Would be interested to know if you can run the Sky Go app on this

You can simply load the various IPlayer (BBC/ITV IPlayer etc), apps to it. They’re available via Google play. Put it in developer mode and you can pretty much load anything you like including IPTV.

Thanks for this. I'm not to fussed it missus. She wants to watch all her shows but i'm fed up off giving sky money for this benefit.

If you’ve a spare HDMI port the 4K Firestick imo is the simplest solution. You can do pretty much the same with one too. I run IPTV on a 1st Gen Firestick, Amazon Prime, Netflix and all the catchup apps although everything it’s slow to load these days. You won’t have that problem with the latest 4K Firestick though although it won’t record live TV

Getting recording is a little more difficult but possible, there are various ways. IPTV solution works if you find a decent one that has catch up built in, my supplier offers 7 days on most main channels. Also VOD etc, another way is to purchase something like a HDHomeRun this hooks in to your network via ethernet and broadcasts all free to air channels across your home network on various devices, they then have a DVR subscription you can purchase, if you don't like the layout (I personally don't) then you have the option of either Plex/Emby and their DVR options too.
I bought this.

Unlike other Xiaomi stuff this is poor.

It really struggles in 4k!

Only works well when set to 720p/1080p.

I'd save up and get a Shield.

Did you do that and did it fix your issues? Just thinking maybe its poor strength of wifi or trying to play a movie with an audio codec atmos for example it doesnt support.

It was struggling on Netflix 4k... skipping frames etc. Always connected via LAN, never wi-fi!

Got my Shield Pro this week, amazing! The Xiaomi will become my travel TV box for hotels.

Not sure who you have connected via LAN? This device doesn't have a network socket cat 5.e would have been nice. You sure this is the model you have seems to be WiFi only.
Any similar boxes with a LAN port?
I know you can buy a USB to ETHERNET adapter but then your adding £10 to the price

It has a USB socket and supports a USB to Ethernet adapter.

Changing resolution to 1080p and it ran fine. It's just not poweful enough for 4k!
Edited by: "stevenhp1987" 31st Jan
As to playing from USB, anyone knows an App that would allow you to set a start position (say, 5 mins from beginning) to play from? My old media player does that. I am thinking of replacing it with an Android box, but none of vlc, kodi, etc allows you to skip to a start position.

The problem is actually running Ethernet through usb not the processing power of the box. I have this same box and whilst it's not perfect it does play 4K flawlessly over WiFi.
Order few months back from Amazon for ~£60.

Good device overall for the price. Be careful when you upgrade to Android TV 9.0. My previous box just got bricked, had no luck getting into recovery menu, ended up sending returning it back for a replacement.
One other thing to not with android boxes is that nearly all. Of them won't run Netflix or prime video in full hd.... Think they run at 480p as they won't have the necessary security measures...... Think this box is approved how ever...... Out of the hundreds of boxes I think only about five are approved..... Found this out much to my guttedness

Apparently there was a plugin for Sky Go that could be used on Kodi to get it working. Never tried it myself unfortunately as I don't want to use someone's else's sky details and get them blocked!

I really should have tried it towards the end of my sky contract thinking about it now. Oh well.
this a UK or EU plug do we know, have too many devices on adaptors the now trying to get back to uk plugs lol
