looks like a good deal. question for the techies on the cfw options:

1) can this be used with a virgin router in modem mode?

2) is it possible to setup to provide mutiple wireless profiles, e.g. guest profile, vpn profile, open profile?

1) yes. Disable the WiFi on the Virgin unit and connect an ethernet cable to the Xiaomi router.

2) from memory I think you can set up a normal profile and a guest profile.
Would this be better than the virgin superhub?

Padavan firmware is based on Asus firmware have ton of options. Hardware if this router is very good for price. Both hardware and software mare magic combination 😁

Personally I used openwrt (lede).
Linux based and can be a bit tricky to set up.
But once setup correctly works as a charm. Especially function sqm qos.

Anything would be better than a Virgin superhub 3.

I see this has only 2 free ports on the back. Also, it comes with a US plug. There is an option to add a UK plug but it will probably be a deathdapter. I doubt the supplied US PSU will be CE marked so maybe need to factor in a new psu.

Had mine for 6+ months now with Padavan, great router once the software is changed.
Heat added. We've had this model for several months now (unlike those above, no software changes or modifications - just plugged in straight out of the box) and it's great for the price.

What's the range like, compared to other routers, if you are able to give an idea..?

Well I can only really comment in relation to the router that we have as part of our Sky broadband (think it's a Netgear) which is poor in our 4 bed 70's house. I bought this one and connected it to the Sky router, and now we have a decent signal all over the house. the Xaiomi was so cheap I thought it was worth taking a change (I'm not at all technical with these sorts of things) so it was just a plug and play job.

Thank you, appreciate it.

Can you do me a favour & look to see if the power supply is CE marked? Thanks!

Sorry, I'm nowhere near home so can't check. I got the router from China via eBay and it came with one of those 2 prong plugs with an adapter to make it fit a UK outlet so I would be surprised to find a CE marking TBH. Works fine though.
Shame its 3G - would have snapped this up if it was 4G

Understood the 3G was just the model number. Nothing to actually do with Mobile.
Is this fast enough to run a vpn on?

Is this fast enough to run a vpn on?

That has nothing to do with the router itself. If you install said Firmwares on the Xiaomi router there is definitely an option to use a VPN, in which case you should be fine. However this has no effect on the speed of the VPN, if your VPN service is slow, it will continue to be slow even using a router and vice versa.

Hope that helps
Anyone replaced BT Home Hub with this?
Yes, before anyone asks, it does have HDR 🏿

Cheers, thanks for letting me know. I currently use private Internet access. I had just seen in other router threads people mentioning the processor was not fast enough. Sounds good to me though so will take a punt.

I think this router has 256mb of memory so it should be fine for installing your own firmware and using a VPN. Putting a new firmware on a router is not the easiest task btw but the router is amazing for this price and its very doable

I power mine off a usb DC power lead to cut the bulk of a plug out of the equation
Got one of these about 6 months ago, absolutely brilliant, I've never set up a router by mobile app before but it was painless, you can setup through the website and use chrome to translate no problem.

Actually if you have a good VPN the router hardware can make a big difference to your throughput speeds.

Anyone replaced BT Home Hub with this?

Your not going to be able to fully replace a BT home hub with this, you still have to use the home hub as a modem.

I trialed running Openvpn on this model using Padavan and Lede. The top speed I managed to get was around 38-40Mbps download in Padavan using Blowfish. Using AES-128 the fastest I got was around 30MBps. If you've just got broadband, it should be OK, but would struggle giving you full speed on fibre. The CPU in the router is the limiting factor, and all the available firmwares are only able to use one thread, or effectively 1/4 of the processing power of the CPU.

Yes I'm using this with BT Infinity, but you will need to get an Openreach modem off Ebay if you haven't already got one. I've got a Huawei HG612.

You can also use this combination with Sky, but you will need to replace the firmware on the router and on the modem.
So from what I've read, you should stick to the stock firmware unless you want to cripple the speed of the router? Not sure how much to trust the stock firmware & how good it is. Anyone have any comments?

I've got the Padavan firmware installed, and the download and upload speeds are around the maximum for BT Infinity.

The only thing wrong really with the stock firmware is that it communicates information back to Xiaomi servers in China. Depends how comfortable you are with that.

If you want proper QoS, a router based VPN, usb devices or Entware/Optware then Padavan is the way to go.
