You don't need this, just speak English slowly, increasing in volume until people understand.
Ideal for anyone visiting London.

Details on here says intetnet: phone or Wi-Fi. So presumably it does need internet connection.

onlytechdeals.com/xia…or/

Pity. As offline would have been something I'd considered buying.

A few years ago this would have been good, but these days you can download languages using Google Translate and use your phone. As mentioned above, offline would have been good.

Damn, that is a killer. I would definitely considered it if it was usable offline. I'm guessing ones that you can use offline are super expensive?

Exactly, especially since this one is online only, it's practically useless since you have all the same technology if not better right there on your phone.
Ideal for anyone visiting London.
Check out the new Microsoft translator app on the play store. Best app I've used so far, easily beats the Google one also.
Does it translate Janet Street Porter ?

Given there's no dial/display on the device itself, presumably a phone is mandatory to use - either by connecting via Bluetooth, or by using your phone to configure it to connect to wifi

No manuals online I can find to confirm this, but seems like there's little benefit to having this over having a smart phone.

The only benefit I could see of having this is not having your phone out when abroad. Thankfully I've never been robbed on any of my travels but if I was travelling and someone tied to snatch & grab - I'd much rather they ran off my a £30 translator than my considerably more valueable Mobile Phone.

.
need connect to wifi only
Yet you can buy apps that do that much cheaper but then they need a data connection as well.
Any swear words?

This was free, covers many more languages, let alone dialects (e.g. the Xiaomi does not cover Cantonese), and works remarkably well.

Which reminds me to also try Microsoft translator, which allows dictionary download for offline use.

I guess if you want to be a spy or drug dealer and don’t need a phone. Then this is for you!
This thing is basically a bluetooth speaker/microphone. It needs your phone's data/processing to do anything useful. I just dont see the point in it, might as well use your phone and google translate.
Xiaomi build quality is superb but translations? Not so sure, their app is full of un translated Chinese.

Received today, returned tomorrow! You need another translator unless you speak chinese, to pair the device you hear numbers in chinese. After that is just trouble to get it connected to the wifi hotspot and impossible to connect to another wifi. On top you have to be online and the translator connected via wifi to do anything. Not helpful if you have no data plan or connected to any wifi. A lot better alternative is Google Translate app which you can translate pictures as well.
