I read somewhere that phones don't have customs charge anyway. They do get charged VAT @ 20% though so this would work out at £128.40.

Maybe, anyway I received Phone without any additional charge. This is very good phone for this price. Miui v8 Global, 2days on the battery with heavy use so I am very happy. Look for the spec and prices on flagships phones, Chinese phones has very good deals.

Not completely correct. Import duty depends on the total price of the item. Anything over the limit and there's import and vat to pay. Under the limit and there's just vat.
With mobiles I think at the moment (and it changes with each budget) the limit is around £130 at time of landing.

Also, if you use someone like DHL ect, they will charge you a processing fee for paying the tax man on your behalf. Usually something between £8 to £12. The Post Office will also change this if the item gets flagged at customs and they apply import and/or VAT...

what Android system is it on? Will it be updated to Android 7 the latest?

5.1 and unlikely to get an Android update, it will get MIUI updates with the security patches though. If you want a very similar phone then the Redmi 3S runs 6.0.1 Marshmallow, again unlikely to see 7 though.

Officially anyway, it'll most likely have custom roms.

Xiaomi have their own UI that sits on top of Android 5 (MIUI), they update that from time to time. It's unknown if they'll ever update the Android version. But if you need it, there are custom roms on XDA that will give you any version you want.

Import duty is charged on the commodity code of the goods not the value. Different products have differing rates of duty (usually a percentage of the invoice value) and this is then added to the overall cost of the item then VAT is charged on the total amount. Import handlers and Couriers may add on charges for processing the import into the UK. Most items imported from outside the EC will be liable for VAT being paid when their value is above the threshold.

Here's my source for the 0% customs duty

HS tariff codes, import duty & taxes for Mobile phone

Looks like 0% Duty and 20% VAT applied by the UK on mobile phones. Can anyone provide any source that states otherwise?

gold only...pity

It's £112 once the warranty is automatically added to the basket. Title needs changing.

Yes that is correct. No duty but full rate VAT. If you are buying from a source based outside the EC then there is a probability that you will be charged on import. Whilst we are still in the EC there is free movement of goods across all member states so no additional charges would be due if buying from an warehouse based in the EC as they would've paid the VAT on initial import from China etc.

Except that the Redmi 3 is running 5.1 not 6.

Good point! A slip of the typing finger there. . .
Corrected.

be careful 32 £ custom . and if you return back than they will charge you 100 $ .
ridiculous company its my personal experience

It's worth reminding people that this model along with a lot of the Chinese mobiles does not support Band 20 of the 4G LTE specification. Band 20 is 800 Mhz. That means you'd only get 3G coverage on O2 and it's riders, eg GiffGaff and Tesco.

On some phones there is a variant or two that does support all the uk 4G bands, but it's important to check what model you are being sold. This caution even applies to common branded phones if you are sourcing them from abroad. eg. foreign Samsung A5 (2016) can be cheaper but lacks band 20. Full UK 4G support needs bands 3, 7 & 20. Excellent full details here: 4g.co.uk/4g-…ow/

Worth considering this also, Android 6 and very good phone, band 20 also. It is eu version with official global rom

I have 4g in o2

I was about to order but it only comes in Gold color. Any other colors available?

Regarding the debate about custom charges, I have bought 3 phones from Chinese sellers over the last couple of years and not ever had to pay customs charges at all.

I think there are no customs for phones but what about VAT?

Not that either.

Does this have to be flashed or is it useable out of the box in the UK?

Thanks

Received a week ago. No customs charge. Great phone, decent specs and even better price.
