Have to agree. The xiaomi brand, frequent updates & the great 4000mah battery make it a winner. Anyone who hasn't had a xiaomi phone should dip their toe in at this price. Even if your not a miui fan then stick nova launcher on and you'll be good to go

They are one my favourite brands, I always had a good experience with them. People don’t realise how good they are until they give it a try!

I’m 99% sure it comes pre-installed as part of MIUI 11 with every Xiaomi phone, will be in tools folder.

Can you purchase the phone without a sim? Thanks

Yes, select £5 data big bundle and it will let you to checkout without paying for a sim however you’ll get PAYG sim in the packaging.
Ah ok great thanks
Almost certainly needs a memory card immediately installed, but that'd be my only gripe at this price. Agreed, Xiaomi are excellent, I've used an old Redmi before, loved it immensely.
Got this. The 32GB version. It's a bargain at 69 quid. The battery is amazing and it's actually a snappy phone. The display quality is average but then again my main phone is a Galaxy S9 so in comparison it is gonna be garbage.
Once again a phone without NFC
have the 5a a lot of phone for not a lot of money

dont know how they do it but its great that they do

brill deal
Absolute steal
These are great phones and at this price & unlocked great value .
16GB storage and 2GB of RAM - why do people accept this as the norm?

It also comes with 32GB storage and 3GB ram but not for this price, also you can look at the next one up which is called Redmi 8

They accept it on a budget phone , as in reality 2GB of RAM is fine for most users.
You can put a microSD card in for storage of photos and music , so the approx 8GB of free storage will store plenty of general apps ( its only really intensive games that need lots of storage and budget phones won't run those very well anyway).

Do be aware that this phone does NOT allow you to set the microSD as internal storage - so you cannot easily put apps on the microSD card.

Not for you maybe. Fine for my parents
xperia l3 is a better deal from 02 i know its a like new phone but ihave had 2 now and they are great value
Keep in mind that while it may be unlocked, it could have vendor specific firmware, like the phones from 3 and Vodafone. Possibly not a problem, but the phones in the mentioned networks are waiting updates that have arrived on devices not bought via a network
for somebody that has never had a smartphone (yes i'm aware that is a rarity) - is this a good option or are there better and more importantly is it easy to use?

It’s pretty easy to use but you probably wanna look at MIUI 11 reviews on YouTube, that’s what it’s interface called and also to remind you this phone has extra large fonts.

For a person who cannot use a smartphone except WhatsApp video calls (I set all necessary contact icons on home screen) this spec / price is perfect. Not everyone is a heavy smartphone user...
I have one and generally it's great. However I have noticed recently that my WiFi seemed very slow. Thought it was my home network but doing a speed test on a different phone I realised it was the phone. I then googled it and it turns out there is a common fault with these and some other Xiaomi phones that if Bluetooth is on it interferes with the WiFi.
With Bluetooth on I get WiFi at about 2mbps, turn it off and it's rapid eg 20mpbs plus which is about as quick as my BB anyway.
I think it is a hardware fault so it doesn't look like a future firmware update will fix it either.
But having Bluetooth on isn't essential for me I suppose, but my smart watch can't now connect with it and I have to remember to turn it back on when in the car...

Use an app called AutomateIt and set your Bluetooth to go off when WiFi is connected and on when WiFi is disconnected to make your life easier
extonjoe20/02/2020 02:24

Once again a phone without NFC

You want NFC then go pay more money! It's not a charity that's going to give you things for free! Techs like NFC costs to put in phones and so ultimately bumps the price up.
I hope you've learnt something today
2 or 3gb ram?

Thanks I can see that may be useful in the car but how is that going to help with a smart watch? The smart watch is permanently paired with the phone so WiFi will never be on.
Id personally pay a bit more for more ram. These only have 2 /3 GB id say 4 GB is the lowest id accept. I dont know why some websites selling phones dont give details of the ram. Its linked to the speed and amount of apps that can run smoothly.

A lot of people dont know the impact 2GB of ram has on a phone esp when companies selling them omit the amount of ram.
Id consider it miss selling if someone bought a phone then found it only had 2 GB of ram. Thats not acceptable.

It's not going to help with the smart watch of course. But seeing as you said having Bluetooth on isn't essential for you and that you have to remember to turn it on in the car this should help...

All phones should have NFC theses days ,I got a cheap honer phone on here for £60
Can someone explain one thing to me? Spec in the OP says "MIUI 11" but the spec on the O2 page says "Android 9" - I thought MIUI 11 was based on Android 10. Does this mean the O2 phones have a version earlier than MIUI 11 running but it can be upgraded? If so how easy is it to upgrade.

More generally, what are Xiaomi like for updates? More interested in keeping the phone secure rather than adding the latest features.

Ta
Can anyone confirm this comes unlocked?

They are good with software updates and security updates.
Some phones are based on Android 10 and MIUI 11 and some other phones like this one are based on Android 9 and MIUI 11.
Is it possible to buy this as a gift for someone without becoming an O2 payg customer myself? And would this phone run the life360 app ok?
