Talking from experience it seems.
Nice phone I got one and love it with it's great battery life, size of screen and stuff just work without searching round for apps as specially if you use dual sims

Have you been charged, are you speaking from experience or just repeating something you've read or heard?
I paid more for the phone I'm typing on now and didn't get charged.
I've ordered three from different suppliers - only been done for customs on one (and it wasn't GearBest). Somewhat luck of the draw. Dunno what GB are like for customs hit generally.

Great phone - camera is average but immensely improved if you take the trouble to root the phone and install the Google Camera app with HDR+.
bought plenty of stuff from Gearbest (including Mi5s, about £180), and never paid any customs... great deal btw
Got caught by customs on this phone from AliExpress, was £13

Only ever heard of people getting charged if using DHL.
I got charged for the the phone extra 30 quid or so had to pick it up from my local royal mail depot
Ps it's a really good phone for the money
Wasn't this cheaper couple of weeks ago!!
Yes, I've bought from GB before and the 'trick' is not to use expedited services like DHL, FedEx etc.

Use land post, snail pace but gets past customes bothering with it (generally). Obviously not 100% guaranteed, but the fact they put gift worth $25 helps!

Edit - I note that the posting method for this is non-tracked airmail - not sure if this will get caught or not, :-(

I prefer the black, but thats £15 more.

New TopCashback customers can get 3.15%, £4 less.

What's the difference between the Global version and the International version - is this the one to get for the UK (yes I see it has band 20 for 4G - is that the only difference?)

20% vat plus a £9 handling fee.
Bought one last year light in the box offer .... excellent phone ...works on 3 ... no issues battery lasts for ages ... never even knew it had fingerprint reader till it arrived. No issues with customs and got £7 back from quidco. I paid about £110 as it was on offer
got phone a couple of months ago ... very happy with it...
No customs and I got it from Gearbest.

Never been hit with customs charges once. Bought three of these phones and countless other things from China, never had a problem.

Probably the 3GB RAM version, not this one.

The global version will have the global rom installed at the factory, and as you say, has Band 20 for LTE. The international version is usually the Chinese version which has had the global rom installed before shipping. It won't be sealed when it arrives, and I'd be surprised if it supports band 20.
Slightly cheaper for the black at Geekbuying

Never had any customs problems with them. Last item came Royal Mail via a Portsmouth shipper!
superb phone for the money. dont know who these chumps are paying £500, £600, £700 + for a phone when you can get a really decent phone for under £150!
ive got mine running with Smart launcher pro and couldnt be happier with it
Bought this in December, took a couple of weeks to arrive. No custom charges and it is an amazing spec'd phone for the price!
The redmi note 5 plus will be out soon so I would maybe wait for that one.

this is still a cracking phone though , im currently using a note 3 which has proven great value for money.
Great phone, works on 4G constantly, very responsive and the battery lasts me about 3 or 4 days with light use! I bought one myself at the end of November, it replaced my LG G4 that was good, but 'broke' after patching, in comparison this phone is lightning fast. Google Play was installed, the Mii frontend is not as I'd like it (prefer vanilla Android), but it works fine, had to manually install all my old apps though, they didn't carry over with my Google account, I think Mii is to blame for this.

Make sure you buy the international version as it supports the common UK 4G frequencies. I opted not to order from GearBest, but used TinyDeal (cost me £147) as it was clearer on the models and had more shipping options. I didn't have to pay any extra tax, the advice said use the slower shipping methods to avoid this (mine took 3 weeks to arrive), apparently the airmail methods get stung more often.
I’ve got one , was delivered just before Xmas.
great phone, I’d recommend it to anyone no problem, replacement screens should you ever need one are very cheap £15 and or less.
i get 4 days between charges.
The trolls who just mention import duties are just after a rise, I don’t bother with them anymore.

the global version is the one you actually want, it’s got global rom and band B20

If you order a case for this you order the Redmi Note 4X 3GB 32GB which is the same as ordering for the global version 4GB 64GB
How does this compare to Mi A1? Apart from the battery, I assume A1 is a much better phone? Trying to make a decision but can't make up my mind
I've got this and the Mi A1 I prefer the Note 4 (it just works without searching for apps) I'll like it even better when I've reflash the firmware back to the older version with the better battery life.

What's the spec like comapred to this?
I really don't understand the fuss about band 20.... I have this phone and, at home (built up London suburbs...), I can only get band 20 and HSPA+ is much faster. At work the phone will be jumping all over the place with bands 20, 7 and 1. I use 4G router there and the speeds are roughly 11, 35 and 50 Mbs with the different bands. When I see 3 bars on the router I know it is going to be a slowish connection as it will be locked on to the band 20 signal (the upload is actually faster than the download).
I have bought this phone 5 times for various family members, usually from Aliexpress sellers though. I have once been charged £13 import fees (£8 of which was Royal Mail handling fee). Great phone.

No it won't according to sources the note 4 was 'too' popular and they have pulled the line shame that greed sets in with these company which is funny really because if they think they can upscale all their note 4 companies onto mi 5 series phones they can think again. I'm not the only UK person to say they have a 150 limit when taking a risk with china. They have their own continent customers though but personally I think this move is a mistake. I'm waiting for them to come back to their senses on the sixth iteration of their phone lines.

TBH they are pretty similar , the screen size on the plus is 5.99 " with cornering gorilla glass , both phones using the same chip , snapdragon 625 unless the global version has something different in it.memory looks the same , camera 12mp , battery is 4000mah.plus runs on miui 9 so a little different to the note 4.

very similar phones but the plus just looks nicer imho.

oh right, thought it was due towards the end this month but I don't mind being corrected. loads of youtube videos reviewing
the plus already but im guessing that's the indian market.

Nice looking if the "leaks" are to be believed. My son's Note 3 is now pretty battered, so the 5 will hopefully be out soon. At 6ft 3in, the 6 inch display would suit him.

Using this phone and unless you're a camera buff I can honestly say I don't think you'd ever need to spend more on a 'better' phone. Great value. Battery is just fab (and that's from someone that upgraded from an LG G2). Saying that I paid the same price a few months ago from AliExpress... I thought it would be creeping down in price but still fab value nonetheless.
