Update 1
Price reduction - it is now £67.49 delivered from Germany.
This item is posted from TomTop's warehouse in Germany, which means no import tax and much quicker shipping than other Chinese marketplaces, so worth the extra few pounds than the next best price on AliExpress.

If minimalist design is your thing, then have a look at this stylish pendant light from Xiaomi Yeelight.

The light can be controlled via a smartphone app, and you can change the colour and brightness for different occasions and atmospheres — dinner parties, work space, romantic night in, and so on. You can also adjust the height, only by hand sadly, but still pretty handy.

It is IP50 anti-dust and insect resistant, so you won't find long-deceased wasps trapped inside.

Should be no tax from Germany
This is just what I've been looking for but I would want to install it on a ceiling that isn't flat (it's for in an extension where the roof is slanted). I presume it would still look OK? Guessing gravity would do it's job but I just can't picture it!

I’m pretty sure it is adjustable on both sides. So you could have one side shorter than the other to even it out.
OK - next question... how is it wired / powered? It looks like it has a figure 8 cable coming out of it! I guess that might make things easier but what on earth do you do with it?

I can't find the manual to explain it anywhere online...
So cool.
i didnt pay anywhere near that for mine, mine was like £61 from Banggood. Wiring is easy, you wire LN&E into the base which is the box that you screw to the ceiling, You get a nice clean white cable that connects to the light (Yes Fig 8 so no earth) and the wires are adjustable. Its a very nicely made product on par with your Philips Hue stuff. My only beef is the app control has two pages for the colour and the white.
£67 now from Banggood shipping from france.

So in theory.... I could power this from a mains socket using a figure 8 adaptor?

You can hardwire it or you could put a plug onto it.

Exactly.. But im not sure what that achieves, you need to use the plate to mount it anyway so why not use their cable? looks nice

I agree - it's just that the ceiling position would be difficult to run off the lighting main. However there is power in the corner that the dining area would be so I could more easily run some power up the wall and just terminate a figure 8 connection through the base and down to the light.

It's not ideal really so maybe this isn't for me right now (do love the Yeelight stuff though!). But worth a thought.

Also, I would be buying in advance of installation by a month or two (in the process of moving) so I can also test it more easily by using a figure 8 into a wall socket just to make sure it works properly when it arrives.

You'd need to shorten one of the cords so it was horizontal.
It's not entirely clear to me. Does it have leds on the top and the bottom? Are both independently controllable?

The main light is white LED, dimmable and you can change the colour temperature. The colour LEDs on the top are changeable too to create a different atmosphere, apparently.

That sounds cool. Great for a kitchen. Will have a look into this for new kitchen.

Just a little thought as tempted to do same to for loft as boarded got a single light pendant and a double plug socket up there so maybe one of these options is good. Does it matter if rsd trip switches have different ampage for mains and lighting from memory just a thought too.
Stupid question, but how is this powered?
Apparently the minimum hanging length is 50cm, which would be too much for us as need to mount under a beam.

Anyone know if this constraint can easily be overcome, I assume it is driven my the need for excess cable to wind back into the mounting unit?

Your lighting circuit should always have a lower current trip switch. It should normally be 5 amps.
Your sockets should eithier be connected to a 13amp spur or a ring mains with a 30/32 amp trip

I was wondering about this as well, looking at 25cm drop, is that possible with some modification?
