Decent price for the phone. My wife wanted it, and it seems to be one of the few below 5" that's any good. Same price at ebuyer if that helps

Decent price for an overpriced phone. I wish there was more competition for compact android phones.

It's not even an upgrade on the 2 year old Z5 compact, it has a mid range chipset really. There should be a lot more high end compact android phones but they are amazingly thin on the ground these days, it's mystifying.

This phone is WAYYY better than the Z5 compact, ive had both!! performance is way better and multitasking (that extra GB of ram makes all the difference), fingerprint sensor is faster. Just no official waterproofing.

Don't believe the reviews. Ive lived with both!

It is an upgrade, from a SD810 to SD650 they perform the same but the SD810 overheats and downclocks and the battery usage is better

Not really. The overheating happened but you had to use extreme load for long periods, like 4K video recording. Which of course the X compact doesn't do, and I used a lot on the Z5C. The Z5C also has a better GPU and is faster for most games, another thing I noticed when I switched between them. I had both at different points and the X compact is a sidestep at best and not much of an upgrade.

Im so surprised you're saying this, in terms of gaming i couldn't even switch to whatsapp and go back to pokemon go without it reloading. I seriously would not recommend the Z5c over this, the frustrations I went through.

4k recording was useless so thats not a plus point! I couldn't record longer than 4mins! because it overheats tells you this and stops!

BUT i can do one better it even overheats and stops recording at 1080p after 4mins too!! thats right!!

I do repeats this everytime some one berates the phone compared to the Z5c. I am not biased ive dealt with both as my daily driver, I went from Z5c to Xc even going against the reviews, it has been a faultless to my usage.

The only complaint ive had is that I can't put a tempered glass screen protector on the Xc since it has a curved front edge.

I'm looking for a new compact phone, old one is an s5 mini and I don't want a new huge phone, anyone have any suggestions please?

Options in the compact category are pretty slim, its either this or the sony Z5c tbh. I've got the z5c and like it, and have avoided upgrading to the x compact because of the reviews and the lack of waterproofing. If you can get the z5c sub £200 new id get that, otherwise this is probably a good shout, as long as you don't mind the lack of waterproofing!

I had a z3c that I loved, went up to a Lenovo p2 5.5 screen, couldn't deal with such a big phone, but I've ended up with a Samsung A5 2017 (5.2 inch) after my z3c died on me, and must admit, the transition to a bigger screen hasn't been an issue. Not too big, and I was totally against anything bigger than my z3c. You might be pleasantly surprised if you consider something a bit bigger.

With very strong evidence that the XZ1 Compact is launching next month the only direction this phones price is going is down, so worth holding off at the moment.

Great spot!
I was going to buy from John Lewis but they were selling @ £299.95.
£40 saving thanks

There's a few of these on CashConverters for under £150, and you get a 6 month warranty too. Under £10 for an unlock code on eBay. Good deal if you insist on getting a new one though.

Then you had poor RAM management of the phone. As for 4K recording you should probably watch this: You must have had some battered version or didn't really use it properly, this is what these two things lead me to believe.

The 4K recording on the Z5C was invaluable to me and the X compact doesn't have it, put to rest that argument right now

The 650 is a 4K video recording capable chipset. Are you sure you can't get this working with another video application, Google Camera for example?

Happy to help

270 quid for a phone with a 720p 4.5 inch screen? Yeah, right. Sony's pricing of their mobiles is just nuts. Plus it's got a dreadful screen to body ratio.

You can root, or you can use camera software but you also probably need to also bypass the temperature protection. Can't say I would be too chuffed about either when the phone was new

I shouldn't have to "manage" my ram. I'd only have whatsapp and Pogo open and id have troubles, if other apps need background access then it should have it.

I've seen that video before, he has "clean" phones. In any case fair enough if it works for you great. It's a disservice to recommend it to Joe Public.

If you want to install lots of junk on a phone and not look after it properly then that is your prerogative but I manage my phones. Personally I would say the disservice is spreading misinformation and exaggerated overheating claims and such like but that's just me.

This phone from my experience is one of the most buttery smooth lag free phones I've ever used. Coupled with 3 gig ram on a small 720p screen and Sony's excellent software optimisation it is one seriously smooth and fast phone. I never had any issues with it either. Sold it cos the camera was blurry on the left edge which annoyed me

I have a Z3C which, for me, was the perfect android phone, but coming up for 3 years old, it's getting tired, the pull down from the top notification only works 4/10 times (touch screen) and it's constantly overheating and throttling - very noticeable with Pokemon Go, and these Sony handsets don't seem to be the most reliable of things.
I looked and looked for a decent small android handset, and this seemed to be the best option, but lost a few of the features of the Z3C (water / dust proofing/4k)
I ended up switching to an iPhone SE (like new from o2 refresh)
Coming from the Sony, I'm finding some bits of iOS a little frustrating, but overall, the performance and size is perfect for me.

Im not the average person i have no junk on my phone, i gain nothing being negative about the Z5c, I managed it well, i bought the phone on release direct from Sony online, so not some dodgy refurb etc. A phone should be able to handle day to day junk. The X compact handles this junk very well. I think it's fine that everyone has their say and people can decide for themselves, after all that's the whole point. I like Sony Xperia phones as well so it's not as though im biased against them (I'm writing this on the x compact) i plan on getting the XZ1c next.

What is this obsession with no bezels! I'd rather have a bezel take a bang than the screen. How many of these edge to edge screens get trashed by a moderate drop! My Sony phones have survived some incredible drops onto concrete and other hard surfaces, doubt an S7 Edge would have.

Screen to body ratio is not just about bezels or no bezels, it's also about the crazy space at the top and bottom of the phone! Apple are another contender in 'can do better with regard to screen to body ratio' stakes. Both Sony and Apple charge crazy prices so you really would expect better technology here. Plus in Sony's case, it's supposed to be about smaller form factor but you can get bigger screens from other manufacturers housed in a body that's no bigger...

Just like their TV's years ago that saw them lose market share to the likes of Samsung.

XZ1 Compact just announced as releasing end of September for £500, I'd still expect some drop in the X Compact, but given the high price for the XZ1 Compact it might not affect the X Compact too dramatically.

That's equating large bezels at the top and bottom as backwards, just because the trend isn't to do that doesn't mean nobody should. Sony partly use the space to have forward firing speakers which is a sensible place to put speakers, having had a phone with downward firing speakers I can speak from experience that they are pants.

Sony have a distinctive design language, as do Apple. There were rumours Sony would follow the pack and move the fingerprint sensor to the rear for the new XZ1, fortunately they didn't and kept their side mounted power button with integrated fingerprint sensor sensor, but nobody else has one so that must mean Sony is backwards

When Sony released the elephant ear speaker TVs they were criticised for bucking the trend for thin bezelled TVs, those that cared about having TV speakers that actually sounded good applauded and reviewed favourably, but Sony ended up following the crowd and only did it the once instead sacrificing audio quality for thin bezels. Their latest A1 TV is the first to use the screen as a speaker, I'm yet to be convinced this will work well, but at least it's trying something different.

But my point is Sony supporters claim they like their mobile range due to their small factor when in actual fact they have tiny screens but not comparably small form factors. Certainly not as small as they should/could be. Quite bizarre.

That's a fair point, though I've not see a flagship spec'd phone as small as any of the Sony Compact ones. Sony could make the phones even smaller if they had no bezel, or make the screen larger, but then you might accidentally swallow it.
