Not my cup of tea but seems a decent price for this year's Mercury Music Prize winners.

The eponymous debut album from South London four piece the XX, draws influence from Young Marble Giants, Cocteau Twins and a hint of electronica and R&B. With these influences, the group craft delicate, melancholic, minimalist pop songs. Tender and seductive, this album is simply delightful. Includes the singles 'Basic Space' and 'Crystalised'.

Terrible band, but seems cheap for a recent-ish release.

No sh!t.

Although my full opinion would be:

"Take one of Joy Division's quieter songs. Then take out the tune, the production, and all the good words, and basically you're there.

Oh, but throw in a huge dose of pretention and stupid hair."

Awesome Album, Awesome Band, Awesome Price have some heat.

I think you've confused the words " awesome " and " awful"...................... ;-)

Massively overrated but still good for the price

Possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard on the internet.

Great band. One of the best albums of the last decade.

Aaaaaaaaahahahahahahahaha ! Ahahahaha ! Ahaaaaaaaa ! Ahaaaaaaa ! Haha. Hah.

No.

Great price on a new album. Loved them when I saw them supporting another band over a year ago.

Amazing to think that people have different tastes in music!

I'm a fan of the album. I like the minimalist feel and chillout vibe but everyone is entitled to their personal opinion. £3.99 for the album is hot from me.

Voted hot for the deal, but completely over-hyped; if looking cool in front of your mates is what you’re trying to achieve, this is the album for you.

I know, I'm absolutely shocked that some people like this while other people do not like it.

You are bonkers.

Terrible band (and unlike probably most in this thread, I've actually listened to the album a few times before making this judgement).

Seems like this is a Marmite album. I'll give it a go for 4 quid.
Heat added. Thanks.

I've seen it live, i own the album. All before the hype from the Mercury Prize however.

Take one of Joy Division's quieter songs. Then take out the tune, the production, and all the good words, and basically you're there.

This sentence basically means take a handful of a certain bands song, change everything in the song inc. tempo and all the instruments etc. and you have the XX, well ofcourse, you also have every single other band ever. Talking of over hyped... Joy Divison.

Might be an idea to youtube or last.fm a couple of the tracks first to get a feel for it before potentially wasting your money...?
I've really enjoyed this album though.

This is a great price for an actual physical CD album, i can't understand the need for other people to clutter up this thread with rubbish.

No, you've misunderstood... I wasn't saying redevelop it or alter the genre, and I certainly wasn't saying add anything to it. I was simply saying ripping the soul out of a good song, and leaving a paper thin, watered down version of the same. It's like a rabbit with myxomatosis... the humane thing to do is just club it round the head so it dies a swift and painless death. As I'm sure it will.

And for you grumpy buggers b*tching at the thread content, it's just a bit of banter and discussion... what's the point of having a community if all you do is +1 and -1 everything ? I'm sure neither myself nor CoolBeanz will lose any sleep over it... if you want to view everything as binary, just read the first post

Anyone remember The Magic Numbers? This band sounds almost identical.

Fair enough. I will see your point and leave it. The fact these guys are like 19, created this while at College/Uni, and it is a special talent to create popular music with the amount of minimalism which is in there songs. Happy to argue fella.

Not in any way, shape or form do they sound a like. Getting mixed up with the Coral and The Magic Numbers maybe?!?

This is a fair price, any more and they'd be ripping you off considering the complete lethargic minimalist approach taken. They provide inspiration for anyone that has only been playing their instruments for a few months and ahs little song writing ability. In all the bands i've played in we've produced music like this and thought "no way we can play this, it doesn't sound finished"

i did like this album for about 4 days now can't listen to it anymore.

Only track I really liked was "Intro" until I got sick of hearing it on every TV programme.

Magurdrac, you clearly don't "get it". That's fine, it's not to your taste.
You do however seem very angry, mummy not cuddle you as a child?

Oh, and for the record, it's supposed to be minimalistic. Again, you clearly don't "get it" - which is cute

I realise it's deliberately minimalist, I said as much, i'm just not a fan of this approach, it seems lazy and I "don't get" the praise heaped upon them for producing an album that to me comes across as recording the first thing they've played and stretching one tiny guitar riff into an entire track.

Oh the irony. You're brilliant.

Worth the price just for the stunning intro track.

And if listening to this album inspires you to listen to Joy Division for the first time...well, I really envy you.

Oh that's right, pick the one thing that suits out of my many contributions. (are you a Conservative politician?). My assessment of the band and their music was much more thorough than your pathetic attempt to make a personal slur on me rather than talk about the music.

No really, your conversational skills and powers of persuasion are quite something, which finishing school did you go to? (I'm assuming this is the level you wanted to play ball at.)

Let's not forget the comment that my laughter was in response to... only of course you've not quoted that, as it's in no way compelling, and therefore wouldn't fit your argument.

If anyone is still interested in this thread - and wants a physical copy of this album without having to wait a few days - pop into your local tesco...ofr a penny than Amazon's price more you could listen to it right now!
