TRIED TO EXPIRE THIS ... PLEASE IGNORE

LOOKS LIKE ITS A TERRIBLE DRIVE THAT'S BEING REMOVED FROM TESCO STOCK

one I bought is going back

xxxxxx Toshiba Canvio 3tb External Hard Drive.

Marked as clearance for £67. There were 2 drives left, and I got one of them at my local tesco at Kingston Park, Newcastle. Don't know if this is national or not, could be. When paying for the drive, Tesco give you a £10 voucher, usable on £75 worth of purchases in the electrical department

Lol.... Its the first time i've picked up a 'bargain' drive from tesco, the staff must be slacking or have enough at the mo.

Got mine yesterday from Ashby

Got loadsa Tescos deals before on HDDs but lately mines always been full price.

Tesco Deals..................If I lived in the shop 24-7... I still wouldn't find one...but hey some do

I'm taking the drive back ... It goes to sleep really quickly and then takes ages to wake up. I did some online research and apparently the drive is terrible to use because of it. I have already got a black/white 3tb canvio drive which apart from the colour looks identical, but obviously isnt as its a really nice drive and works great. I apoligise if you've bought this drive because of this post and I suggest you return it .... Sorry

May be it's the PC that is causing the drive to sleep, try to disable selective suspend on your PC google it for a step by step and use the HHd again it may help,

I've had no problem with the drive. The charger stopped working and I got a swap out replacement.

Spotted this before seeing it posted on Hot Deals. It's the first time I got decent deal from Tescos in yonks...I rarely go in now. Not tried it yet, but the last internal drive I bought was a Toshiba 2TB which has given stirling service. If there's a problem it'll go back. No need to expire. There's bound to still be a few out there, but not many for sure. I got the last one in Whitstable.

Does this drive come preloaded with pron?

If you mean Tron, no. He's still on the grid.
It might come with Legacy but only if it escapes.

As for the drive being sleepy, have you tried updating the firmware?

Thanks op for honest feedback, read the feedback on Toshiba website I wa going to keep but going back now

These are fantastic value drives, I have two. One contains a highly rated Hitachi drive and the other a decent Toshiba drive!!
Check the following thread out for decent info rather than numpteys from the tosh website, as for sleeping, ALL external drives do this as it saves power and from my experience it doesn't take that long for them to spin-up again and become available.

Buy em to rip out the excellent Hitachi drive!

Any ideas, aside from opening it up, how to tell what hard drive is inside? Got one of these the other day at £67 but haven't opened and set it up yet...

Running Smart HDD utilities like HDDScan or CrystalDiskInfo should reveal the drive inside.

Or if you're feeling adventurous open up Device Manager and look at the Disk Drives tab - drill down to Properties, Details and finally Hardware Ids.

Make sure you do a thorough disk test before you pull it out as it will void the warranty if you try and put it back in.

Hardware Ids is unlikely to reveal what actual drive is inside the enclosure (It certainly doesn't on my XP x64 rig)
I used 'fanspeed' to find out what drive is inside the tosh :-)

Cheers for those suggestions, will see if I can get around to setting it up this weekend and (without opening up the blighter!) find out what's inside the enclosure...

Using SpeedFan it came up with this:

TOSHIBA DT01ABA300

Any good? Do you noticed any/much difference between the Hitachi and Toshiba?

reading the Toshiba feedback from their page its not about spinning down issue but alot of people reported the drive dying and people losing data.

I rather have less space and decent drive.

Anyone used these over a year regularly?

It's a Hitachi 5K3000, I have a server full of them, excellent drives!

I have had them running for 3 years in a server, no issues, one of the most RAID friendly drives, the enclosure they come in is awful, the drives overheat no wonder they fail.
