Great price for this game

Being retold in Kiwami is the nascent character arc for Yakuza - the game begins with series protagonist Kazuma Kiryu getting sent to prison for the murder of his family patriarch (which he didn't commit). To make matters worse, during the 10 years of his imprisonment, not only does Kiryu's clan expel him from the yakuza, but ¥10 billion (~$100 million) goes missing from the clan treasury. Worse yet, Kiryu's childhood sweetheart is also nowhere to be found, and with the entirety of the Japanese underworld on the hunt for the missing cash, Kiryu is all but lost until he finds the orphan girl Haruka, searching for her aunt who shares the same name as Kiryu's missing love. What follows from there is a web of betrayal, underworld politics, and redemption as nothing will stop Kiryu from regaining his honor.

Yakuza Kiwami Features:

A Family Patriarch's Ransom of New Content - "Kiwami" literally translates to "extreme," and the game was named that for good reason. Not just a simple graphical upgrade, Kiwami adds nearly 30 minutes of cutscenes alone, providing all-new insight into the game's plot and creating common threads with series prequel Yakuza 0. There's also added distractions (Pocket Circuit car racing, MesuKing: Battle Bug Beauties, new hostesses, and more), side quests, combat updates, re-recorded Japanese dialogue, and more to bring the original Yakuza game into the latest console generation.

A Place for Newcomers and Veterans - Yakuza Kiwami is the ultimate bridge in the series: newcomers or those whose Yakuza experience started with Yakuza 0 will have familiar, exacting controls, top-notch SEGA localization, and a solid starting point for entering the Yakuza franchise fresh. Veterans will experience a familiar Kamurocho and plot, but with new levels of story depth and graphical polish.

But it was me! Majima! - Completely new to Kiwami is the "Majima Everywhere" system, where the series' deranged, one-eyed maniac will constantly surprise and challenge Kiryu to combat when he least expects it. We're talking "popping out of a goofy costume" levels of surprise, so players must stay on their toes and be ready to defend themselves from Kiryu's chief rival.

Extreme Revitalization - Kiwami is rebuilt from the ground up with all new HD assets, exclusive Japanese voice audio re-recorded by the series cast, and more; optimized for the PlayStation 4 and running in 1080p/60fps. And following suit with SEGA's commitment to the Yakuza series, the game will release in both physical and digital formats in the west.

It's a clear plastic sleeve with some print on it. You don't get a separate case as well, like you do with Fallout 4, for example.

EDIT- That image on the left is what the steel book looks like with the sleeve over it.

Action wise they’re melee brawlers... the fighting system feels a bit clunky and out dated to be honest but that’s not really the draw of these games... the story and writing is great (if you’re into Japanese gangsters) and all the side stuff is absolutely bonkers!!!

Think of Yakuza as a peak behind the curtain of Japanese culture, and all its wonderful eccentricities!!!

Damnit paid full price for this thinking they'd sell out. Could have waited it's still in the wrapper haha. Waiting to get 0 at this price though. Heat. Hot. Jerk chicken
Yet another game to add to the collection, but this one I’ll actually play it what a day it’s been for games!

Open world Streets of rage (but with in depth fighting mechanics) with a gripping story.

I bought this and Yakuza 0. Spent 5 hours on 0 but just couldn't get into it. I was expecting something like Sleeping Dogs, but it's nothing like it.
Not saying it's bad, but just not my thing.
Yakuza series are the one best game series without any doubt.
I put the series on very top next to GTA.(not that they are similar).
they are definitely not for everyone though.
but I've soar played 3,4,5 and have 0 still to play.all of them have been excellent unforgettable experiences.
I ordered Kiwami too..lol I still have to play Zero..and Yakuza 6 will arrive in few months.

I felt the same way about Yakuza 0, but I kept playing and then things just clicked. The story is over 30 hours long and so the beginning feels very slow. The story is absolutely fantastic and surprisingly quite emotional.

The gameplay can be a little repetitive, for some. There are some really good side actives in the game, like running your own club and underground fighting. It was probably my favourite game of 2017, even more than horizon zero dawn.

Sorry to ramble on, I just think this game is amazing and if you can tolerate the slow start, and don't mind reading subtitles, there is an amazing story here with some fun gameplay.

People please jump on this. Great (if a bit over the top) narrative, fun action and loads of insights into Japanese culture.

How does this compare to sleeping dogs?

Good question. For starters, Yakuza is part of a long series of games, so the characters are much more developed. I think the gameplay experiences are similar, in that you have a main quest and several optional quests to achieve extra XP points to develop skills or acquire specific items. But in Yakuza you don't drive any vehicles (apart from a brief taxi section in Yakuza 5) and you mainly traverse environments by foot. Both games have their own fighting system, SD is more focused onto chaining attacks (like the recent Batman games) while Yakuza is more free-flow, and you can use weapons in both (Yakuza has very graphic finishers that often involve weapons/objects/street furniture). Environment wise, Yakuza has more detail, is often set in more than one Japanese city carefully reproduced, you can even visit arcades where you play classic Sega games emulated. All in all they're both very good games, SD is a one-off package while if you get into Yakuza you have several more episodes - sequels and a prequel. On a final note, the main guy Kazuma Kiryu is total bad*ss.
For people asking what these games are like, anyone that has played and is a fan of Shemnue, the Yakuza series is like the spiritual successor.

0 first then Kiwami.

I'd play the reverse personally. 0 is the better game not being a remake and all and a lot of games do the whole playing before the main game in a sequel thing. I think going from 0 to Kiwami would make it seem, well, a bit naff and quite obviously a PS2 game with makeup on. YMMV.

If you were looking to start into this series I take there are only 2 games for the PS4? This and Zero.

Should you then play Zero before this?

And finally is this one a remake of one of the older games?

Sorry for all the questions and thanks.

Kiwami is the remake of Yakuza 1 (the first yakuza game) on Playstation 2.
Zero is set in the 80s so happens in an older timeline, but obviously it was made the last.
Yakuza games can be played independently, the stories/characters are linked but there is a short video in the ones that I played telling the relevant events of the past.
I wouldn't worry to much about the order.
for PS4,there is only Yakuza 0 and Kiwami at the moment, but Yakuza 6 is due to launch in few months time.also I think Kiwami 2 is also in the works (remake of Yakuza 2 on PS2)
PS3 got Yakuza 3,4 and 5.(and a spinoff Yakuza Dead Souls which is a zombie themed game and not as good as other games imo)
Great price; heat. Shame the awful website won't let me login and order this and Shadow of the Colossus.

Had to persist with the site but managed to log in.

Excellent price and after the brilliant Yakuza 0, can't wait to dig in to this.
If you have problems with the site it was the same price on their eBay store.

I personally would play 0 first, even though I didn’t. Perfect introduction to the series for a new player. I know many people who have played 0 on PS4, then this, then set up their PS3 again to buy and play all the other entries in the series. It’s that good
is this a new game?

is this before '0" which is the latest game in the series

is this better then shenmue?

I finished 0 last weekend and it's amazing. The Majima storyline was sensational. I loved the ending, post credits. Started Kiwami the same day and I can't believe the change in Majima! #SamuellovesMajima can't wait for 6 in March.

tl;dr: Yes and no (looks new but is based on a classic from 12 years ago). No, after. Generally considered to be, yes.

It's a remake of the first game in the series (see this comparison vid to get an idea how extensive it is) as the first two games were on PS2. The second also had a remake released in Japan a few weeks ago so hopefully we'll get that this year.

Chronologically '0' is set a number of years before the first game / this one and everything is introduced fresh. Both serve as a great jumping in point for the series; though I started with Y3 (on PS3) a couple years back, loved it and haven't looked back.

I plan to but haven't played the Shenmue games yet. If you Google for opinions you'll find that those that like one also like the other but Yakuza is generally considered the better series of the two. All of the Yakuza games are widely adored so I don't think there's much chance of you being disappointed at all if you like atmospheric Japanese games with a rich world and story and really great characters.

You can start with Kiwami (aka 1) or Yakuza 0. It's really up to you but it will probably feel better starting with this as the game mechanics and side quests are improved a fair bit in 0 - the other way round might feel like a bit of a downgrade. On the other hand, it might prove easier to fall in love with the gameplay and quirkiness of 0.
