Yes that was on my short list as well as the Denon but I decided to go for the Yamaha and you will spend a lot of time finding it near to this price.

The 608 can be had for £330 exactly from a reputable seller on Ebay (i've just bought one) it's a re-furb with 12 month warrantee. I know which Amp I would rather have

Yamaha all the way.

Hi all could do with some advice. Having just bought a 42PFL9664 Philips LCD and a Sony 760 Blu ray I am looking for an AV.. having seen this

for £199 im confused. Is this Yamaha amp or the 608 worth the extra?
Thx

That's because you quite obviously tone deaf.

Got a Yamaha RX-V2065 and love it...Yamaha amps really do sounds nice and warm.

In a nutshell yes. Listen to both side by side if you can and then you will see why.

I would rather buy from the AV Forums second hand than chance a refurb off fleabay but we all have decisions to make and I hope you are happy with your £330 gamble.

Personally I would prefer to spend the extra and get brand spanking new and for an extra £70 I get a receiver that is widely considered better

I guess you also believe that refurb means just a tatty box and a return that a customer changed their mind on don't you

Voted hot good amp, way better than Onkyo 608 to my ears tested both side by side

I generally find warmer amps are better for music than movies - but you could find a complementary set of speakers to brighten this up if people are saying it swings towards warm.

Not much in it but i got an email from audiovisualonline.co.uk on Thursday last week and they have it for £398.99 using voucher code yam6. Free delivery as well.

I've used them many times and they are excellent.

Can't see it on the description but does it have usb input?

I would personally go for this over the Onkyo, worth the extra imho. Having owned Onkyo, Yamaha and Pioneer recievers my preferance would always be for one of the latter two. If budget is the over riding factor though Onkyo are definately good vfm.

iI will hold on till the 608 goes sub £400

Yeah I bet Richer sounds will price match it if you're quick.

ok thanks I will try

Another advantage of a Yamaha amp is the Silent Cinema mode. For me with a little one upstairs, switching on the full surround sound can rarely be done. For late night viewing sessions with a decent set of headphones (sennheiser HD595s for me) the Silent Cinema creates a really good pseudo surround effect without waking the wife and daughter! Don't think the Onkyos have Dolby Headphone and it's only on a few of the more expensive Denons as well.

Ditto, the Onkyo has the edge after reading reviews of both.

You would trust reviews over your own ears?

Buy the Onkyo by all means if you have no central heating in your house and like the smell of capacitors slowly burning out over time. The Yamaha is a far better choice especially if you like a warmer sound rather than the bright sound of the Onkyo's, Sony etc.

Showing as £449 now [same as everywhere else]

Looks like a few people took advantage of the price...

If anyone wants a Onkyo 608 for £377 I have a single use code for Exceptional AV from a competition. Thought I'd won one when the email came through but alas it was just an offer of a cheap one !!

PM me if your interested.

Just spoke to the company and it might be worth giving them a call and seeing if they will honour the price you spotted on here before they had to increase the price

or he's owned one before and can attest to the reliability of onkyo...btw i have an '875. I used to have a yamaha and id go back to them or sony anyday. I would never buy another onkyo product.

totally accurate. Had to have caps replaced on mine. Took 2 trips to the onkyo centre (which do the 'refurbs' apparently) and having to actually video the screen problem as the engineer insisted it didn't have one until i emailed them a bunch of vids demo'ing the prob. My first 875 exploded -literally- after plugging it in.

Might be why ebay and other online sources are so full of refurbs.

I'm trying to find a receiver to which I can connect my PS3 and Sky+HD over HDMI inputs, and my projector and telly over outputs. Is there any device with which you can choose and change which input goes to which output? Sometimes I game on the projector while my wife watches tv, sometimes we might want to do that the other way round...
