ith a powerful receiver and stylish speakers, the Yamaha YHT196 offers a winning combination.

TOP QUALITY HOME CINEMA SOUND MADE EASY

Simply connect your TV, Blu-ray/DVD player and games console to the Yamaha YHT196 and you're ready for the full cinema experience. With built-in Dolby and DTS processors, the YHT196 fires out sound effects around the room for an uncanny sense of "being there". Once processed by the 192/24-bit Burr Brown DACs on each channel, the sound goes through a high power, low impedance amplifier with an impressive 100 watts per channel (6 ohms), giving powerful dynamics that'll keep you on the edge of your seat!

CONNECTIONS FOR YOUR WHOLE SYSTEM

Coming complete with three, 3D compatible HDMI sockets, the Yamaha YHT196 is all set for linking up either 3D or conventional sources and connecting them through to a 3D or conventional TV. Furthermore, there's also support for an Audio Return Channel, letting you feed back the sound from your TV through the home cinema speakers with just one HDMI cable. There's also a wide range of both digital and analogue inputs for your other source components.

SLEEK SPEAKERS

With an eye to enhancing the coolest of interiors, the satellite speakers have been designed to be unobtrusive. Slim enough to be wall mounted by the keyhole openings, they also benefit from a tapering rear panel and smooth edges. The centre speaker is a dedicated design with improved sensitivity and crisp dialogue. Yet, it too can easily be wall mounted. The carefully designed subwoofer gives the bass a natural, powerful sound that avoids bass 'boom'.

EASY TO USE AND YET STILL PACKED FULL OF FEATURES

In addition to sounding great, the Yamaha is also easy to use. The SCENE function automatically selects the ideal DSP (Digital Signal Processor) setting to suit the input. Four SCENE selections ensure that you always have the correct setting when watching films or listening to music. As this is a Yamaha, the wide selection of DSP modes (17) give a range of effects not available with other AV receivers.

Other great features with this budget Yamaha receiver include Compressed Music Enhancer and A/V lip sync function. Compressed Music Enhancer improves the sound from MP3 sources such as computer audio or iPods giving them enhanced detail at the top end and lower bass. A/V lip sync function ensures you get a perfect match between the image of dialogue on your TV and the actual sound from your speakers. Finally, the YHT196 comes with a revised power supply that not only gives low stand-by power consumption but also the option of selectable automatic power down, making this an environmentally friendly system.

For a quality home cinema system that doesn't sacrifice sound for good looks, the Yamaha YHT196 brings it together with style.

Honestly wouldn't know, been looking for a cheap system for a while. And this one caught my eye! Would appreciate others opinions too!

And me was going to get onkyo HTX22HDX 2.1 & add the the other speakers if needed - the only thing that puts me off a bit is the Size because i haven't got a big room

Ha ! I wouldn't worry about the size of the Receiver box, surely you have room under the TV or in a cabinet beside it! I have pretty much decided to go for the 196, just hope its in stock!

Just bought this a few weeks ago for 199,so this is a great price! Sounds decent for the price. Looks ok too, and very easy to set up.

Thanks, encouraging when someone else gives a personal review Cheers

Excellent entry level setup for this sort of money. Heat.

lovely , another anti freindly neighbour device !!!

Hot looks a nice bit of starter kit, I am a fan of Yamaha AV equipment mind, because every time i buy a bit i'm impressed.

I wouldn't recommend this speaker set. Have demo'd them myself, they sound horrible. Nobody can get rid of these things. They sound 'tinny' and the bass is very artificial. I'd say they were equivalent to a desktop set.

Hear them for yourself, but If you're looking for quality, look somewhere else.

Seems a great deal, probably would have bought had I not got the ONKYO HTX 22HDX a couple of weeks ago. The Onkyo's great but I think it could really do with the add-on speakers, especially the centre one. Does anyone know if you can get the centre ones separately or if it has to be an Onkyo one?

I got these surprisingly good for the money, speakers aren't great but what you expect! I swapped out the two fronts for some bigger better ones and its much better

Without the sub, I'd agree, they sound tinny.

With the sub, they're OK. Better than a set of desktop/PC speakers anyway.

Obviously, if you spend more money (and buy the right kit) you get better sound.

I'd love you to point me in the direction of more/better kit for this money ....

Surely no more Tinny than TV's own speakers ? GOT to be an improvement on the standard stuff.........

I've not got these fully set up yet, but gave them a quick test a couple of weeks back and was fairly impressed. They're no match for a more expensive system, but for a small room or for a flat (where a good neighbour wouldn't want to boom shake shake shake the room anyway) I think they do the job.

I was a little disappointed that it's a passive sub, but there's an output for an active one at least - so a good set for upgrading over time....

They are.

But the point is more that you'd struggle to even get a basic AV amp for this money. To get the amp and speakers is a good deal. Stick a better set of speakers on it if/when you can afford them but even out of the box this will be a huge improvement on flat panel built in speakers ....

Scorching deal

Another reason why its a good price is it might not have DTS HD and Dolby HD I see so many of these being sold as people are upgrading but if you don't have and not interested in Blu Ray this is an OK price as a starter.

Hving just checked that system out, you can add what ever speakers you like to make it a 5.1 system, it uses standard speaker interconnects and you can add 2 surrounds + a centre.

Although if using a PS3, it can be set up to pass the HD audio, so losing no quality and still getting the full Blu Ray benefits.

Great little system for the money. We've been very happy with ours. Obviously you get what you pay for, but at this price nothing else can compete. Those asking about high definition audio, it can not decode dts-hd or master audio but if you use a PS3 like myself it will 'pass-through' these formats.

Is this through the optical or Hdmi output of the PS3? And do you need to chance the sound ouput setting on the ps3 settings?

Madcal87 - HD audio has to be via HDMI, optical does not have the bandwith, just a matter of changing the sound to LPCM on the PS3 and job done.

N ice but non HD sound formats rul it out for me even if 3D compatible.

Don't need myself but it looks fantastic for £179

And then does the picture also get sent from the AV receiver to the TV via the AV receiver hdmi optical output!
THANKS - sorry im a complete beginner at all this

Yeah, just be aware that it probably won't show HD audio on the display, just PCM but you can check when playing a Blu-Ray by pressing one of the pad buttons (not sure which) and the current audio output will be on the top right.

Have this and its amazing

Argh I want this so much but my student budget won't stretch...

Yep can check the audio with select on the pad.

MadCal87 - Thats right, PS3 to AV receiver via HDMI then one single HDMI to TV. Carries all the audio and picture that you need!

THANKS SPEARS !
On a related note.... I think for SKY TV its Optical cable for sound...and then hdmi for picture... True ?!
