TOP QUALITY HOME CINEMA SOUND MADE EASY

Simply connect your TV, Blu-ray/DVD player and games console to the Yamaha YHT196 and you're ready for the full cinema experience. With built-in Dolby and DTS processors, the YHT196 fires out sound effects around the room for an uncanny sense of "being there". Once processed by the 192/24-bit Burr Brown DACs on each channel, the sound goes through a high power, low impedance amplifier with an impressive 100 watts per channel (6 ohms), giving powerful dynamics that'll keep you on the edge of your seat!

CONNECTIONS FOR YOUR WHOLE SYSTEM

Coming complete with three, 3D compatible HDMI sockets, the Yamaha YHT196 is all set for linking up either 3D or conventional sources and connecting them through to a 3D or conventional TV. Furthermore, there's also support for an Audio Return Channel, letting you feed back the sound from your TV through the home cinema speakers with just one HDMI cable. There's also a wide range of both digital and analogue inputs for your other source components.

SLEEK SPEAKERS

With an eye to enhancing the coolest of interiors, the satellite speakers have been designed to be unobtrusive. Slim enough to be wall mounted by the keyhole openings, they also benefit from a tapering rear panel and smooth edges. The centre speaker is a dedicated design with improved sensitivity and crisp dialogue. Yet, it too can easily be wall mounted. The carefully designed subwoofer gives the bass a natural, powerful sound that avoids bass 'boom'.

EASY TO USE AND YET STILL PACKED FULL OF FEATURES

In addition to sounding great, the Yamaha is also easy to use. The SCENE function automatically selects the ideal DSP (Digital Signal Processor) setting to suit the input. Four SCENE selections ensure that you always have the correct setting when watching films or listening to music. As this is a Yamaha, the wide selection of DSP modes (17) give a range of effects not available with other AV receivers.

Other great features with this budget Yamaha receiver include Compressed Music Enhancer and A/V lip sync function. Compressed Music Enhancer improves the sound from MP3 sources such as computer audio or iPods giving them enhanced detail at the top end and lower bass. A/V lip sync function ensures you get a perfect match between the image of dialogue on your TV and the actual sound from your speakers. Finally, the YHT196 comes with a revised power supply that not only gives low stand-by power consumption but also the option of selectable automatic power down, making this an environmentally friendly system.

For a quality home cinema system that doesn't sacrifice sound for good looks, the Yamaha YHT196 brings it together with style.

HD audio won't be missed with these speakers! Need a £1k rig to get the benefits IMHO. As for THX - WTF do you expect for £200! Bargain = HOT

Good system,I have the exact same setup and for the price really packs a punch.

For just a little more u could have something like in the above link. In answer to your question for price like this I expect to have HD sound
bought this for the little lady and it is a good amp and worth the dosh

the speakers arent worth peanuts though.
the speakers have no bass and are too quiet and too focused.
the sub has no grunt to compensate for the lack of bass on the other speakers.

all in all a good starter pack but ditch the speakers as soon as possible to get the best out of the system
lack of dts hd is a biggie spend an extra £50 - 70

As mentioned no Dolby HD or DTS HD, for an extra £50 you could of got a Onkyo HTS3405 from Richer Sound. Give it a week or two and it'll be back to £250 as it has been for a few months. Or if you find it for £250 online they will price match no problem at all.

Yeah I've read that 3 times now and have no idea what you mean
only pro logic. No DTS master or DTS HD etc.

Only ProLogic, are you for real? ProLogic II and ProLogic IIz are the main ones
Can someone help me decide between this set and pioneer HTP071. link hotukdeals.com/dea…113

Any Help is Greatly Appreciated, Thanks!
If I'm trying to get my parents to slowly upgrade their newly bought HD tv, should I get them the Onkyo TXSR309 which has recently gone down in price froogle.richersounds.com/pro…blk or potentially even the Onkyo HTS3405 if it goes down, and use it with their speakers from their old analogue sony amp then upgrade the speakers later?
Exoid, the HTP071 doesn't run 3D which most them if not all the new ones do, but it does do DTS-HD and the rest.
But I'd recommend the HTS3405 if you can wait a week or two and I can guarentee it will drop to £250.

Montblanc the HTS3405 would be the better choice as its an all in one package, and decent set up. It will go down in price again, its been £250 on and off for ages.
I opted for the HTS5405 for the newer amp, its also an active sub rather than passive so gives of much better base.

Thanks for the advice The HTS3405 is instore only though (boo) and I live more than 100 miles away from Richer Sounds. It's a shame as I want to buy from them because of the 5 year warranty.

The VIP £10 voucher is for instore only too if anyone was wondering.

This one accepts LPCM giving you HD audio if your player (like a PS3) can decode it instead of the amp.

The YHT-196 can accept HD Audio signals (linear PCM via HDMI … The YHT-196 can accept HD Audio signals (linear PCM via HDMI transmission) from Blu-ray Disc players for enjoying maximum sound quality.

Source here
Splutterbug the YHT-196 doesn't play DTS-HS or Dolby HD, I know this system pretty well. The only way you'll get your ps3 phat to play HD audio is through LPCM but the Av receiver HAS to be able to play it in the first place which this doesn't. The slim ps3 you go through BitStream.

That link you've put even shows it doesn't do DTS-HS or Dolby HD, it says DTS and Dolby only and just tells you about what the other ones actually do.
THX certification was established in 1983 so hardly a new feature, and is completey irrevelant in hardware at the lower end. It wouldnt even be able to get to 100w per channel for setup on the SPL meter. Are your walls covered in egg boxes for sound proofing etc, otherwise THX won't be optimised.

Looking at the specs, it can handle HD audio when decoded in the player, (this can be done with the PS3 fat and slim) has 3D passthrough, audio return and control.

This looks a decent basic setup for the money.

Toon-army, this can handle LPCM HD audio, the AV receiver doesnt need to be able to decode the formats as this is done in the player when selecting LPCM.
i bought this from best buy at the end of november for the same price.

as mentioned the speakers are pretty poor but some of this is down to the pathetically thin speaker wire supplied. so if you buy this, do yourself a favour and get some ofc, minimum 79 strand, wire as well, it makes a fair bit of difference. having said that, i still swapped the rear surrounds with a pair of eltax floor standers i had boxed up doing nothing and bought a pair of mission m72's from cash generator for £25 to replace the front surrounds. I'm now happy with the quality of sound and grunt which was missing from the original package.

I wouldn't worry too much about hd audio either if you have a ps3 or a bluray that can decode and pass through.

Pioneer seems to have better speakers, and HD sound decoding as well, would go for this even if £50 dearer.

I think this link may help but LPCM is uncompressed HD audio, no it's not DTS MA or Dolby True HD but it is the same audio quality, the difference is instead of the amp converting it, the player does. I never mentioned this could play DST MA or Dolby True HD, just that it coud play HD audio over LPCM

Gonna go and pick this up from Birmingham today, if you join the VIP Club-thing, you get (as stated previously) a £10 voucher and also there is a voucher for a free 10m Cambridge Audio Ultra Micro Cable... Worth trying for?

Thank you! But now i am even more confused
This has an optical out. Does that mean i could connect my ps3 and xbox to it and then play the sound through the speakers or through the optical out to my mixamp and headphones?

Interested to know that you are replacing the front speakers with the MISSION M72. So you connect the two inputs of a M72 speaker with the same input cable? Do you feel the receiver is not strong enough to power the M72 as the two front speakers?
