Yellow Tail Merlot - double discount at Tesco - £4.34 each (buy 6 for £26.04) POSSIBLY CHEAPER WITH PRICE GLITCH!

Yellow Tail Merlot currently on offer at Tesco at £5.79. Buy 6 and get the 25% off so £4.34/bottle. However, I just got it even cheaper due to the Tesco Price Promise and it looks like a Tesco price glitch!

EDIT - If you do not buy 6+ bottles of any one wine, Tesco Price Promise seems to assume you paid full bottle price for each wine, even if you got the 25% discount for buying a mix of 6+ bottles. If those bottles are cheaper elsewhere you may then get further cash back via Price Promise.

Apols if this is quite detailed but I'm still trying to work out what happened! I suspect it will appeal to those of you who appreciate a good price glitch!

Tesco Price Promise requires you buy 10 DIFFERENT items and then compares your basket price with Asda, Sainsbury and Morrisons. It then refunds you any difference against the cheapest basket of the things it can compare. HOWEVER the comparison I got was on my wine price BEFORE the 25% wine discount, so I effectively got the best competitor price per bottle discounted by 25% of the Tesco price......

In case that isn't clear, this is the fine detail. I happened to have a basket of exactly 10 different items. 3 were food and 7 were wine. I had 12 bottles of wine in total (including 4x Yellow Tail Merlot) and 2x some others. Came through checkout and got my 25% off the wines and ALSO got a price promise till spit for almost £3.50.

Price Promise matched 6 of my items to Asda (4 of my wines were unique to Tesco so it didn't compare prices of those). My 3 food items were similar price to Asda so no real difference there. But it decided that the remaining 3 wines I bought were all cheaper at Asda...... and this is what's wacky.

It decided I'd paid £5.79 for my Yellow Tail Merlot (I paid £4.34 after the 25% off) and because Asda have this at 2 for £10 (i.e. £5 a bottle) I should get another 79p back per bottle! Likewise the Wolf Blass Yellow Label Chardonnay was 24p cheaper at Asda, and the Brancott Estate Merlot Cabernet was 51p cheaper....

In all 3 cases it has compared the pre-25% discount price against the competitor whilst I actually paid the price AFTER 25% off. I've got the cheapest competitor price reduced by 25% of Tesco's price!

It means I got my Yellow Tail Merlot for £3.55 a bottle. Wild!

You deserve a drink after explaining that!

I hate these opening posts with hardly any information in them. (_;)

Great effort, thanks

Thinking about this I suspect that the Price Check decided because I had not bought 6+ of any one wine I had paid the per bottle price - even though the checkout had applied 25% to the total 12 bottles.

complex explanation anyone?

Wow. Yellow Tail is one of my favourite reds for glugging and at £4.34 or less a bottle is a steal. So if i've got it right, i'm best buying five Yellow Tail reds plus a bottle of any other wine to make up the six to qualify for the 25% discount. I'll then hopefully, cop for some extra cashback. Thanks OP i'll give it a go.

Perhaps you should buy the Yellowtail in multiples of two if the comparison is with Asda @ 2 for £10

Any 6 bottles (or more) will qualify for the 25% off. To also get the apparent price promise cash back you'd need to have 10 different items in your basket and these would generally have to be cheaper elsewhere (or unique to Tesco). I was lucky to have exactly 10 items, some of which could not be compared at Asda and most of which were apparently cheaper at ASDA. FWIW I actually lost 50p by buying a food item at Tesco which was cheaper there than anywhere else!

The simplest way to get a result would be to buy 10 different wines which were all apparently cheaper at ASDA! That way you would get the ASDA price discounted by 25% of the Tesco price! Note also that there is a £10 cap on any price check refund!

It's £6 a bottle at Tesco, so £4.50 if you get the 25%. Asda have this at 2 for £10, so if you met the price promise terms (a bit fiddly) you could potentially get it for £3.50 a bottle.

You may have to buy just 4 bottles of Shiraz though - if you bought 6, Price Promise might realise you got the 25% off price. You may also have to buy in pairs to match the Asda price.

I've been thinking about another shop tomorrow - say Yellow Tail - 2 x Merlot, 2 x Shiraz, 2 x Chardonnay and then 7 other "staple" food/drink items either not on offer or which are currently a bargain at Asda - e.g. Milk, or Napolina chopped tomatoes, etc. Once you get to 10 line items you should trigger the price promise and generate a decent till spit.

Heat for your version of War & Peace alone

Check your receipt, apparently they are having problems and sometimes only the first 6 bottles are getting the 25% discount.

Btw this is not a glitch , it always happens.

Should the 25% off be discounted at checkout? Also, the Price promise discount - is this refunded after the order is complete?

Yes the 25% will come off at the checkout and the price promise prints out after the receipt.

I will be getting 4 x hardys stamp of australia @ £7.49 each* and 2 others @£4.99 each. It comes to £29.99 after discount and will get a pp for £9.96Obviously I need 8 other items, I usually get 10p sweets or value tinned stuff.*£5 in asda

Interesting. I have never seen this discussed before. The classic Tesco Wine Multibuy plus 25% off comes up time and time again but I've never seen anyone mention a Price Promise discount like this on wine. I'm almost relieved to have it confirmed!

Just did this at my local and it worked - though I slipped up on some Sharwoods curry sauces (1.75 in Tesco vs 1.00 at Asda) as one of the varieties I picked up wasn't available at Asda, so I ended up paying the full 1.75 for that one - dammit! Be very careful

Where do you find the Price promise thing? (Sorry, I have never heard of this before)

I always do it, I posted an example but tesco have reduced their price so have deleted it. It used to work out extremely well when the meal deal wine was comparing £7.99 to £5 in asda , but they have stopped the discount coming off the meal deal wines now.

I use mysupermarket to look for items that are cheaper elsewhere. They only compare against Asda, Sainsburys and Morrisons

I did it instore and it sounds like the others have too. However Price Promise also applies to on-line orders so it should work there too. It will NOT apply to Tesco Wines.

I assume the key here is to find wines which are expensive at Tesco and cheaper elsewhere. The price you end up paying is the cheapest competitor price less 1/4 of the Tesco price. Oh and to buy wines you are going to enjoy! (_;)

Just a couple of decent compares.

Brancott Estate Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough (750ml) £7.50 T, £6.67 S, £6.50 A
Torres Vina Sol (750ml) £6.99 T, 2 for £10 S
Barefoot Pinot Grigio (750ml) £7.09 T, £5.50 A
Oxford Landing Sauvignon Blanc (750ml) £7.99 T, £5.50 S

Remember the price promise is capped at £10

I am trying to place an order online but it doesn't discount 25%. Shouldn't it be online as well?

can you post what you bought please and how much you saved ie 2,4,6 bottles

Excellent wine, but I'd be far too drunk to contemplate this offer. So far I managed >

Entering Morrison's realising I'm in the wrong store, running down to Tesco, well sort of shandying my way over there doing the pretending not to be drunk run/walk thing, falling through the entrance as some nonce makes the automatic doors open. Then I tripped over the "apology wife I did a bad thing" roses at the front of the door and landing face first in the sandwich rack, sometimes it's a melon rack but that's on Tuesdays at the expectant mother's conference they seem to hold near the bananas. Then helping out at the customer services, their microphone is excellent, "exshuse me where can i do my dealsz, I would like to order s-ssix bottles of your finest kangeroo juices". Why is it that you always end up with embarressing products? I was price checking Tampax, tights, kiwi shoe polish, frozen veg, a mango, some string I found in my pocket that annoyed me when I couldn't find a barcode on it and some wellingtons, I even price checked the trolley. None of this helped me get cheap wine and I fear I've totally misunderstood this deal. The police were very helpful, they told me I was a grade A w**k*r, which probably means I get a medal or something, I think this wine got a medal so I feel like I'm twinned with Australia, can't get a Visa though which is a mystery to me. Thanks op for the deal but it was very hard work and I ended up sober which is very ironic.

im too tired to figure this out but i really want to do this!

Buy two cases (total 12 bottles) of this Yellow Tail Merlot at tesco online and they work out at 4:34 each delivered. I'm afraid the YT Shiraz is out of stock though - always goes fast.

I am sure the meal deal wines where included last year (so if you bought 6 meal deals you got 25% off the full price of the wine). T&C state this has been fixed, can anyone confirm?

Ummm, I love Ribena!

As so many people do at HUKD you are confusing a deal with a lifestyle choice. If you want to comment on your lifestyle choices for wine then maybe some folks would be interested in constructive suggestions for alternative wine bargains in this price range (or more expensive ones with some insight into why you think they are so much better). Otherwise you are just trolling!

Considering he's been a member for 5 years and as not posted one deal in this time its not going to happen.
