I've watch a few videos on the quality and it does look really good, I'm sure there are some comparisons on YouTube vs the hero 2018

if you dont mind using a waterproof case its way better than the go pro hero - a go pro session is better value than the hero imo

i've used the basic yi action cam and the yi lite and the quality is great for what you pay compared to a go pro , if the offer for the go pro session wasnt on last month i would've bought this one no question

the ONLY thing the go pro hero has going for it is its water proof out the box which in fairness for what people use these cameras for is a big positive

yeah my plan would be for surfing/paddleboarding etc..
it seems as though you cant use the screen when in the case, which is kinda against the point of it..

  • Waterproof up to 132 feet underwater. Withstands up to -22° F temperature and resistant to high water pressure. Case uses hard backdoor and does not support touchscreen. Select "In Housing Mode" in System Settings to switch camera/ video modes easily with shutter button.

I'd extend waterproof to general robustness as well. The YI cams need the case really if you're in a dusty or wet environment, or if the camera is likely to get knocked much. The Go Pro Hero 2018 is much better in this regard. Also the Go Pro is easier to use in termsof menus etc, although Yi isn't bad by any means.

However the Yi cams both offer better image quality than the Hero 2018, particularly the Yi 4k which is really strong. The Hero 2018 is the budget go pro and it's quite evident with the 1440p limit, no slow mo, noisy photos etc.

However be aware that point 1 can impact point 2. If for your given activity you're going to need the Yi in a case, that will impact image quality (slightly), sound quality (majorly) and usability (majorly).

Not disagreeing with anything you just said...

for both my original yi and the lite , when i wasn't going in water i just put them in aluminium cases (few quid off *insert your preferred Chinese go to site for cheap stuff*)

while not for everyone one thing that made a big difference for me between the yi's/ go pro hero is you can time lapse video on the yis , go pros you have to import all the stills and stitch them together .

But to be honest and i'm sure people will disagree for the majority of times a regular user doesn't really need anything above 1080 so the camera that gives the most features for that would be the one to go for versus ease of use
Hate fisheye effect and on the new gopro you can change it

Yup very down to what the individual needs.

Yi lite is debateably the best budget action cam there is. Great features for the price. For about 5 mins they were going for 25 quid on prime day.... gutted I missed it!

On the other hand, someone who wants to use it on the beach would probably benefit from the Hero 2018 to resist sand and water.

Someone who wants to wear it on a helmet would probably benefit from the Hero session design.

Etc etc

Really isn't a simple answer with this as it's down to the uses it'll be put to and the price someone's willing to pay.
