Not bad but remember the water case isn't included (separate bundle or optional extra) and unlike GoPros the Yi range are not water resistant by default.

I wouldn't get the Hero 6 unless the price goes down £50. Between the GoPro 5 hero black and 6 hero black aren't that great. If you need a action camera soon, then I'd get the Hero 5 Black, else wait until the GoPro 7 comes out (or Hero 6 is reduced).

Depends what you'll use the cameras for? Inside use, water use, out in the cold weather (snow?) I'd go for the Hero 5 personally.

I'm going traveling Mid October so i'm in no real rush, kind of want to get a feel of using an Action Camera though before I go and have a trip to Amsterdam start of April and thought it would be a good time to get the feel of using one.

Agree with poster below, wait until the 6 is reduced. If you’re looking to get something to get a feel for an action can maybe try a Hero 4 (still brilliant cameras) or even an SJ Cam as a cheap entry level
Is it the very latest, top of the line model or is there something better by this manufacturer?

The YI 4K+ is better. Main difference being it does 4K 60fps rather than 30 on this model. Also I believe the better model has usb c

Why not just go for this? It's going to give much the same performance for a considerably smaller cost, according to the reviews. Any particular reason to avoid this? Am strongly considering going for it.

Out of interest, why go pro hero 5 over the Yi 4k? Seen comparable but big price difference.

I bought a Yi 4k for around £180 and found to be reliable and easy to use with decent batterylife, additional batteries are cheap as well.

The main downside I've found is the clumsy waterproof case which is needed if you want to use a GoPro mount (it's just a tripod thread on the device itself) and also to protect it from water and impacts. I hadn't realised just how fragile it was until I dropped it in the house onto a wooden floor from waist height and it's shattered the rear touch screen which is not functional. However another screen is £50 and it's still much cheaper than a GoPro so while an annoyance, I don't regret going for it over the GoPro.
I have this so feel free to ask any questions. Key things to note:

It comes with no connector goodies, so you're going to have to buy all the cases, sticky pads, arms etc yourself (so factor in an extra 20 quid or more if you want legit 3m pads)... It also doesn't include a SDHC card.

I bought the version WITH the case (but again, no sticky pads). It's a bit of a pain to use with the case on, so you have to make sure you set the right mode.

Pretty much sucks in low light environments (as does the gopro tbh).

I'd strongly consider the GoPro 5, or 6 when it comes down in price. That said if you're in a hurry this is a pretty nice price.

Thanks for the useful tips. Assuming the case is pretty much a must, this yi 4k comes in at 135. At what price would you consider the go pro 5 to be a better deal? As in, if you could pick up a go pro 5 for 200, would you rate that better?

That's a tricky question, the YI 4K has better image quality per frame, but the GP5 has a higher frame rate. The YI is sold as superior to the GP5 (and technically is), but then again the GP5 accessories, batteries, support etc are easy and cheap to buy - will you be able to get a YI battery in a year or twos time? Can you still buy a GP2 battery now - hell yes, and in great quantity.

The GP6 pulls ahead, but commands a stupid price tag.

If you're looking for a stop gap, consider the "Akaso 7000" which should be around the £50 mark. I owned this camera, batteries are easily available and are gopro compatible. The image quality is good, has a ton of accessories however the build quality is lacking.

Thanks for the info. I have a circa 50ish one but have found image quality to just not be good enough, even when on the claimed 4k settings. Understandable for the price, but ultimately I find myself preferring my phone in most situations unless it's literally a true 'action' shot. I suspect this cheap cam will now mostly be used on dog collars and attached to questionable quality toy drones lol.

I think I'm going to give the Yi a go at this price. Based on some of the reviews it doesn't seem like there's that much difference in the core functions, and as a casual user I'm not sure I'd get enough out of the advance features the go pro offers to justify the price right now. Wish me luck

Thanks for the post and price glitch info, just brought. At this price, there is no comparison.

If you have a fast memory card, you can also increase the quality\bitrate a little using this mod

I'm not sure I'd trust it to be honest.

Costs 20 to get the case with the cam direct from Yi. Granted that's about double the Gearbest price, but you pay for quality and if the case does leak Yi will replace both the faulty case and your destroyed camera.

Gearbest on the other hand would probably call the leak another feature and try to charge extra..

Personally I have never had a problem with Gearbest but you are right it's a fair concern. The waterproof case was not an option when I purchased my 4k+ although I don't plan to use it for very wet conditions.
Purchased cheers. Got this on the lightning deal in December but decided to return as I think hard ware is faulty. Otherwise film quality is incredible for the price and sound.
Reason for return is battery leak/ or drains during use for 20 mins of 2.7k/30fps goes from 100% to 12% which shouldn't be normal. Even got spare batteries to see if the battery was the problem. Let's hope this one is fine. Voted hot
