Great deal on a solid 1080p action camera with 60fps, don't get fooled into purchasing it for the 4k label if it's only 20fps

Would probably adjust the opening sales pitch to include the '(NOT INCLUDED, SOLD SEPARATELY)' with regards to it being 40 metres waterproof.

Campark ACT74 Action Camera 4K 16MP Waterproof Cam 30M Underwater Camera 170°Wide View Angle 2.0 Inch LCD Screen with 2 Batteries and Portable Package https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01J51W5QG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_evi0AbJX9DV2V

This has better image quality with a much better interface. The touch screen makes a world of difference and there's no comparison between the Yi dedicated action camera app versus the generic app that campark uses.

However, the campark comes with a great range of accessories, this doesn't come with anything. So expect to purchase a waterproof case at minimum for the Yi (about 10 quid on Amazon), as otherwise you can't attach it to anything or take it near any water - it's full of holes!

Both are decent shouts for the money, but personally I'd go with the Yi and buy a case.

One thing to note, both lack image stabilisation so depending on what you want to use it for they both may not be fit for purpose. Walking with either of these will make your footage look like it was captured from one of those starwars AT-AT machines...

Thanks a lot for your help! I'll probably go with the Yi then!
How does it compare with this one please? aliexpress.com/ite…B=0

Also, can you use this underwater still since this one is touch screen rather than buttons like most action cameras have?

Thanks

It doesn't look like this is really suitable but looking for something for my holiday. Want something ideally I could wear so I can take it on rollercoasters, water parks, etc.

Are there any recommended brands and products that are a cheaper option than GoPro?

I like very much Xiaomi but in that case I would stick to YI 4K, there is lot of compassion videos on youtube and always YK is a winner.
Looks a great action cam for the price.
Can these be used as a webcam as well?
The official waterproof case is £35 which is a bit of a killer. Are the cheaper generic cases reliable?

Didn't this model have audio sync issues?
Was going to buy one but that and no IS put me off.
Bought one off eBay. USB charger port snapped off inside rendering it useless after a few weeks.
The waterproof case on Amazon is £39.99 (OUCH!)
Edited by: "Gray_Anderson" 17th Apr
so this yi 4k is not yi 4k but yi discovery with worse sensor, slower processor, smaller battery, without image stabilisation and lower frame rates. So it's not that much of the bargain as I expected.

This (yi discovery) and the YI 4k camera are the same shape. So just eBay yi 4k waterproof case. And it's closer to £10.

The original YI camera I believe you're referring to doesn't have a screen. You can't view the picture or tweak settings without a separate app on your phone. Personally that ruins it for me, so the discovery is the better bet.

The main downsides of the discovery are audio quality/syncing, lack of image stabilisation and lack of a mount thread on the bottom (essentially needs to be in the waterproof case to attach it to anything else). But, for 35 quid it's a good deal.
I don't understand how they can call these cameras waterproof?!

They aren't they come with a waterproof case.

It's like saying my t-shirt is waterproof... when I'm in a submarine.

Considering this has a touchscreen, you won't be able to access anything once it's in the case.
There seems to be some discrepancies when it comes to reviews of the Yi Discovery 4k. Some sites review it as a fake 4k camera since their review sample came with an AllwinnerV3 chipset while other another review stated that it came with an 'Ambarella A9SE 100' --- EIther way, video quality isnt that spectacular.

Allwinner V3 = doesnt natively support 4k. It will give you upscaled 1080 or 1440p footage so it will look like poop. A lot of cheap chinese cameras that claim to be 4k use this chipset.

Ambarella A9SE 100 = Does support 4k at 20fps but specwise the chipset is below the Hisilicon Hi3556 that is used in the Yi Lite action camera.

Unless you dismantle your camera to have a look, you wont know what chipset it arrives with and I think there are two different cameras with different chipsets floating about on the market somewhere as on the cameras Amazon page, Yi have failed to disclose what chipset they use unlike their other higher tier cameras where they literally plaster the name of the chipset all over the page.

Heres a written review -- Stating its an AllWinner V3

Heres a video review stating its an Ambarella A9SE 100

I will be voting this deal cold

If budget 4k is needed i would go for a Yi Lite 4k -- on promo it goes for just over £60 -- I bought mine for £62 but later on returned it.

If you only care about 1080p than their first gen Yi camera is ALWAYS on promo and will drop down to the same price as this Discovery 4k.

I hope this helps.

I think they are the same and the 8mp is interpolated up to 16mb, but I'm no expert.

How do you intend to use the camera? Unless you're sticking it to something permanently (e.g. a helmet) I don't think a camera with no screen is viable these days.

It will be mainly for one trip to be honest lol. I'm going to Dubai and have a decent camera for general use, this would be mainly for under water things and desert (buggy riding etc).I'm sure i'll find more uses for it in the future but that's the main reason.

I agree that the screen would help most of the time, my priority would be image/video quality and I can't see the exact processor used as it just says 'Yi A9' on this but the other has an Ambarella A7LS.

Looks like this one doesn't have image stabilization either so my guess is that it may be a cheaper processor.

Yea quite possibly. Depending on budget, the Yi 4k can usually be had I think for about 120 and that fixes all of the potential hang ups with these two camera. Better quality, proper 4k 30fps, better audio, has the fitting for mounts, has EIS, has the best touchscreen and interface etc. Costs quite a bit more upfront, but may pay off in terms of longevity.

By the way there's loads of really useful comparison videos on YouTube which are worth a look. It's where I got all my info when I was searching. I definitely think Yi is the best value proposition.
So what is the end verdict, is this a geniune 8MP Sony sensor or one of those rip off action camera's that claim to use a Sony sensor but instead have a lower 4 or 5MP sensor? Is the chipset definitely a poor allwinner chipset? So many action cameras are offered in near identical cases but with massive variation in the internal circuitry probably because in China there is little consumer protection.

Yes it's a genuine Sony sensor. The 4k is interpolated, but as a 1080p 60fps camera the image quality is strong for the price range. There are limitations that reflect the price, which have been mentioned earlier in the thread.
